Van was wonderful for comfort for a large group of people. Very easy and convenient to reserve online. Pick up and return process was smooth. Price very reasonable. The only suggestion I would have is to reveal the exact location of pickup and return before confirming rental. We had to uber a bit to pick up and return van so need to plan ahead.

The Van was great, held as much people i needed to tour the family & friends. Lots of space at the back storage for luggages. The 2 issue i have was the suspension squeaking at the rear of the Van and AC filter at the front might need to change. Overall it was a great rental for 2 days.

This was such a great option for our group of nine people. Our two families with kids had plenty of room and while it’s a big van, it’s very easy and comfortable to get around in. We were especially happy with the communication with Liam - he was so easy to communicate with and answered our questions quickly. It was our first time using Turo but we found it easy with Liam. We highly recommend him!

Rent a van and explore Honolulu, HI

Things to do and places to see in Honolulu, HI

Hawaii is made up of four main islands: Oahu, the Big Island, Kauai, and Maui. But Oahu - where Honolulu is located - is by far the most visited. As the capital, Honolulu dazzles visitors with the glitz and glam of Waikiki Beach. But as locals will tell you, there's so much more to the city than this stretch of shoreline. Whether you're away from the crowds at Lanikai Beach near Kailua, surfing at Oahu's North Shore, or immersed in nature at Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, Oahu is full of unforgettable experiences. If you're in town for about a week, here are the top three things to add to your itinerary.

Rent the perfect car
Honolulu, HI

Waikiki Beach

At the heart of Honolulu is Waikiki Beach. Between the beach and high-end shopping, you could spend a week here and never get bored. When you're not taking a dip in the warm Pacific water, spend an afternoon shopping on Kalakaua Avenue at name-brand shops, boutique stores, or the open-air International Market Place. Adventure seekers can surf, kayak, or snorkel Turtle Canyon along the pristine coastline while gazing at the iconic views of Diamond Head. And when you're ready for a bite to eat, you'll find an array of eateries along a two-mile stretch of beach, from casual spots to elegant fine-dining restaurants.

Catch a sunrise or sunset at Diamond Head Crater

To get breathtaking sunrise or sunset photos of Oahu, hike the 0.8 trail to the top of Diamond Head, a crater that was formed 300,000 years ago. Although the hike is steep and strenuous, with rugged terrain and lots of stairs, the coastal views at the top are nothing short of breathtaking. Just remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring lots of water. And to avoid most of the crowds, try to book an online visit at 5:30 a.m. or one right before closing. An early morning climb may seem ridiculously early, but getting there while the rest of Honolulu is still stirring is an unforgettable experience.

Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden

For a peaceful retreat into a lush environment, spend some time in Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, a 400-acre botanical sanctuary in windward Oahu. This haven offers family-friendly trails surrounded by tropical plants and the towering Koʻolau mountains. The views are simply mind-blowing. In addition to strolling around the 1.9-mile garden, visitors can spread out blankets, picnic by the lake, feed the koi, or simply take a breath and savor what nature has to offer. The best part about this botanical garden is that it's free.

Group travel van rental in Honolulu

One of the best ways to keep everyone together when you're traveling as a group is to book a van. Instead of juggling multiple car rentals, searching for scattered parking lots, or struggling to coordinate meetup times, you'll all arrive and leave in one vehicle. A van can also ensure everyone's luggage gets picked up and dropped off at the airport together.

Moving van rental in Honolulu

Renting a cargo van on Turo prevents you from having to make multiple trips to move furniture or equipment across the island or even in the Honolulu area. Keep in mind that since many residential neighborhoods have tighter streets, you'll need to reserve a parking or loading spot with the landlord of the building. Also, look out for street-use rules so you don't get a ticket.

Outdoor adventure van rental in Honolulu

In town to surf, kayak, and bike? You'll probably want a spacious cargo van for all your stuff, especially if you're hauling your gear to the North Shore. For roof-mounted boards or kayaks, remember to strap them securely to ensure they don't slide off during your trip.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)

If you're staying on Waikiki Beach, the HNL airport is just 25 minutes away, making the start of your trip stress-free and effortless. Heading to Oahu's North Shore instead? Plan for a 45-minute drive from the airport. After you land, skip the airport car rental counter and locate your airport van rental pickup spot on the Turo app. Once you have the keys in your hand, head straight to your hotel and dive right into your magical vacation.

The Honolulu Zoo and Surrounding Streets

While traffic in Honolulu and the Waikiki Beach area is generally pretty awful, the cars tend to thin out on the Southeastern end of the district, where the zoo is located. You can find free parking on Monsarrat Avenue, and parking in the zoo is $1.50 for 4 hours, making this a convenient pickup spot for your van rental. Parking by the Honolulu Zoo can be a great pickup location, too, if your hotel is located in the area.

Discovery Bay Center Parking Garage

For a central pickup location that's close to the beach, shopping, and restaurants, the Discovery Bay Center Parking Garage is a good choice. The rates are affordable compared to the surrounding hotel parking rates, and the garage is secure. And if your hotel is in the heart of Waikiki, it should be a short walk to your hotel. Once you've paid for your pass, you can also enter and exit the garage whenever you like.

Top tips for renting a van in Honolulu

If you're planning on renting a van in Honolulu, pay close attention to the clearance height of parking garages as well as low-hanging branches. Vans typically require wider turns, which can be tricky when navigating narrower Honolulu streets, like the winding roads near Diamond Head. As you get closer to the beach areas, there are plenty of pedestrians and cyclists, so drive more slowly and stay alert. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind.

What is parking a van like in Honolulu?

Many parking garages in Honolulu tend to have clearances of 6.2 - 7 feet, which can be too low for vans. Try to find open lots, like at the Honolulu Zoo or at Ala Wai Harbor. Alternatively, you can find street parking in select areas. As you leave downtown Honolulu, you may find low-hanging branches in some residential areas, which can be a hazard for tall vans. Fortunately, most beach parks have open lots, making it easier to park your van.

How to choose the right type of van for your Honolulu trip

If you're traveling with a group and prefer not to rent multiple cars, pool your money and rent a passenger van. Passenger vans can seat 7-15 people, depending on the size, while minivans can seat about 7-8 passengers and are ideal for large families. Those who need a spacious interior to transport surfing equipment or furniture can rent a cargo van or a moving van. Just keep in mind that cargo vans can be challenging to park in residential neighborhoods.

Loading a cargo van

When loading your cargo van rental, start with the heavier items and spread the weight across the back evenly. This will prevent tipping, especially when you're making turns. Secure the items with straps or cords to prevent them from shifting. Leave space to access items you may need during your trip, or pack them at the back of the van for easy access. Finally, check the maximum load capacity of the van to ensure you don't overpack the van and damage the brakes or suspension.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Honolulu

When it's time to fuel up, you'll find plenty of gas stations in Honolulu, such as Texaco, Shell, or Aloha Gas. Remember that many vans take diesel rather than regular gas, so check this detail before booking your rental. Also, fuel prices are higher than in most cities on the mainland only because Hawaii must ship fuel in. Remember to factor these prices into your budget.

EV drivers have plenty of choices, too. They can charge their vans at the Hawaiian Electric Charging Station off Highway 1 and several ChargePoint Charging Stations. Make sure to check your van's charging compatibility, though, before using a public charger.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked.
