Pickup near or at Airports
For a safe, stress-free time cruising through the Lone Star State, here’s everything you need to know about driving in Dallas, from local road rules to where to park and find gas or charging stations.
As a large, car-centric city, it’s important to know Dallas’s road rules before you set off. Observe general Texas laws, including driving on the right-hand side, wearing a seatbelt at all times, following road signage, and adhering to speed limits, which are clearly signed and enforced throughout the city. These start at 30 miles per hour (mph) on residential streets, followed by 45 to 55 miles per hour on larger city roads, and up to 70 mph on highways like the I-35E and US-75.
Rush hour traffic can be heavy in Dallas, particularly on the I-635, I-30, and the Dallas North Tollway. Outside peak times and in the suburbs, driving chills out thanks to the city’s wide, well-maintained roads.
The weather is mild in winter, but summer often brings intense heat and sudden storms. Use your headlights and windshield wipers to stay safe amidst low visibility.
Parking is widely available throughout Dallas, especially compared to denser US cities. The city center offers multiple garages and car lots, including the DalPark Garage (200 Lane Street) and the Platinum Parking Lots on Jackson Street (1710 Jackson Street) and Wood Street (1720 Wood Street). Street parking is common throughout Dallas, but often metered. In areas like Uptown, Deep Ellum, and Bishop Arts, you’ll find a mix of paid street parking, surface lots, and private garages.
Dallas has an extensive toll road network that visitors should be aware of before they drive. Major toll roads include the Dallas North Tollway, which runs from downtown Dallas through Addison, Plano, and Frisco; the President George Bush Turnpike (SH 190), a loop serving Garland, Richardson, Carrollton, Irving, and Grand Prairie; and the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SH 121), connecting Plano, Frisco, Lewisville, and McKinney.
Other tolled routes you might encounter include Chisholm Trail Parkway, which runs southwest from downtown Fort Worth toward Cleburne; SH 183 TEXpress and I-35E TEXpress, offering managed express lanes through Irving, Grapevine, and Lewisville; and I-30 TEXpress between Dallas and Fort Worth. Some access roads around DFW Airport are also tolled, depending on the route you take to or from the terminals.
Dallas drivers have easy access to many gas stations and a strong network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. For fuel, you’ll find stations near major roads like the Stemmons Freeway and Woodall Rodgers Freeway. Reliable options include the Exxon at 750 Riverfront Road, the Shell at 2324 McKinney Avenue, and the Mobil on the corner of Powhattan Street.
There are plenty of charging options dotted throughout the city, with stations located mostly in the city center and in shopping districts. Choose an easily accessible spot like the ChargePoint at 800 Main Street or the Blink Charging Station at 301 S Harwood Street, both of which are located in parking garages, providing a secure area for your rental car while you charge.
While Dallas has public transit via the DART light rail and buses, coverage is limited for cross-city travel and in the suburbs. A rental car on Turo makes getting around significantly easier, especially for business trips, shopping days, or visiting nearby cities like Fort Worth or Plano. Coordinate a vehicle in Dallas, and you’ll have a wide range of makes and models to choose from, all for pickup from convenient car rental locations.
