Pickup & return areas at Los Angeles International Airport

Planning pickups and car returns at Los Angeles Airport is hassle-free on Turo. Your host will direct you to collect your rental car from convenient locations like the LAX Budget Parking Lot or the Sunrise Parking Lot. These lots provide airport shuttle services to and from the airport for added convenience. Be sure to confirm the exact rental location in advance with your host to ensure an easy process. Communicate with your host

Coordinate with your host ahead of time to finalize Los Angeles Airport car rental pickup and drop-off details. They will leave the rental car at one of the approved airport collection areas with a parking ticket for you to exit. It’s important to contact your host and confirm your pickup arrangements at least 24 hours before your desired drop-off time.

Parking & airport fees

If you’re picking up a car at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the airport charges a fee for vehicle deliveries, which Turo collects and sends directly to LAX without marking it up or keeping any part of it. Your host might also require you to cover parking fees for entering or exiting the airport, but they’re required to disclose this in their listing. Since these fees aren’t included in your Turo rental, it’s a good idea to confirm any additional costs with your host before booking.

Top tips for renting a car in Los Angeles

Exploring Los Angeles is easy with a rental car. From iconic beaches to Downtown LA, having your own transportation from Los Angeles Airport lets you navigate the city freely. For a smooth experience, we've mapped out the essential LAX car rental information you need before setting off. Whether for business, leisure, or a special event, these tips will ensure a hassle-free journey around the City of Angels.

How does airport pickup work at Los Angeles International Airport?

Skip the lines at the Los Angeles Airport car rental counters and go straight to your car’s location. You can easily pick up your rental from the LAX Budget Lot or Sunrise Parking Lot. These parking areas often have airport rental car shuttles, making it convenient to reach your car after landing. Confirm the location and your desired pickup time with your host in advance to ensure a smooth rental experience, then head straight into your Los Angeles adventure.

How does drop-off work at Los Angeles International Airport?

Returning your rental car at LAX is just as easy. Coordinate with your host to confirm your drop-off location, which might be the same spot where you picked up the vehicle or a nearby lot. If you’re returning your car to LAX Budget Parking, park in an available stall in section B9. If you’re returning the car to the Sunrise Parking Lot, let the attendant know you’re a Turo guest and hand them the keys — they will handle the rest. Remove all personal belongings, inform your host of your return, and head off to catch your flight without stress.

How far is Los Angeles International Airport from Downtown Los Angeles?

Los Angeles International Airport is about 18 miles from Downtown Los Angeles, which translates to a drive that could take anywhere between 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on traffic. From LAX airport, you can easily access popular spots like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios, or Santa Monica, making your rental car essential for enjoying the best of LA.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Los Angeles?

Driving in Los Angeles requires attention to local laws. Always drive on the right side of the road, and keep in mind speed limits, typically 25-35 miles per hour (mph) in city areas and up to 65 mph on freeways. Rush hour traffic can be heavy, particularly on major highways like I-10 and I-405, so be sure to plan your travel times accordingly.

Only authorized drivers listed on your Turo reservation can operate the rental vehicle. Ensure all drivers have valid licenses and are approved on your booking.

What is parking like in Los Angeles?

Parking in Los Angeles varies by neighborhood. You’ll find metered street parking and parking garages in most areas, with options like the Hollywood & Highland Center parking garage offering convenient access to the city’s attractions.

For cultural excursions, parking is available at the Getty Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Be cautious of restricted zones, especially in busy areas like Santa Monica or Venice Beach. Most parking garages and street parking accept major credit cards and debit cards.

Are there toll roads in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles has toll roads, especially around the 110 and 91 Freeways, to help bypass traffic. While most of LA’s city limits don't have tolls, you may encounter them on express lanes and bridges.

To pay, you’ll need a FasTrak transponder, but some toll roads accept debit cards too. Make sure you're prepared with the proper toll payment method before entering express lanes or toll routes.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Los Angeles?

Gas stations are abundant in Los Angeles, especially along major streets like Sunset Blvd and Wilshire Blvd.

For electric vehicle drivers, LA offers numerous charging stations, including at LAX airport, Downtown, and popular spots like the Grove or Santa Monica. Many public garages and shopping centers also provide convenient charging options for EVs.

Do I need to rent a car in Los Angeles?

Renting a car is a must for anyone visiting LA. While LA has public transportation options, including buses and the Metro, it’s much more practical to have your own transportation for the ultimate flexibility. LA’s sprawling layout and lack of reliable coverage in certain areas make public transit inconvenient for getting to popular spots like the Getty Center, Griffith Park, or Santa Monica Pier. Having a rental car ensures you can see everything at your own pace.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
