Toyota Prius Prime 2021

I am so glad I found this car. The Prius is great. I was also glad to meet the owners when I picked it up because I was new to this type of car, and having someone show me the features made it much easier to get started. I brought a phone holder so I could use navigation and connect my phone to the car, which was very helpful, especially if you are used to relying only on Waze. The Prius is a very comfortable car, and I was excited to try out a hybrid for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to charging, so I couldn’t take full advantage of that feature. We also agreed with the owners that I could return the car at a different parking lot, which made it much easier for me to get to the airport. The parking lot even provided a shuttle ride to the airport, which was very convenient. I would definitely rent this car again. Overall, it was a very good experience. Yes, there were a few creaks here and there, but that’s normal for a used car that has had different drivers over time. I didn’t find anything that limited or bothered me during the trip. Thank you for a great first experience with your car & Turo.

Top tips for renting a car in Los Angeles

Make sure you’re ready to cruise down Los Angeles’ roads by getting a hold on the local driving conditions first, from road rules to parking to the infamous LA traffic.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Los Angeles?

California, and the west coast, is generally considered a laid-back place, with roads lined by beautiful palm trees. However, LA traffic is heavy, so it’s important to understand the lay of the land before you drive here.

While cruising through Los Angeles, stick to standard Californian road rules, including driving on the right-hand side of the road, wearing a seatbelt at all times, observing road signage, and sticking to posted speed limits. These tend to start at around 25 miles per hour (mph) in residential areas, followed by 35 to 45 mph on city roads, 55 to 65 mph on major roads, and up to 70 mph on freeways like the I-405, US-101, and I-10. California also enforces a ‘basic speed law’, which means you must slow down if conditions like traffic, fog, or rain make the standard limits unsafe.

Handheld phone use while driving is illegal across California under the Hands-Free Law, so always ensure your phone is dash-mounted to avoid fines. Right turns at a red light are permitted unless otherwise signed. You must always use your headlights while your windshield wipers are on, and slow down or give way around emergency vehicles with flashing lights pulled over on the side of the road.

Traffic is a defining feature of driving in LA. Congestion is common during weekday rush hours, especially on major freeways and roads headed into downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Santa Monica. Travel times can vary significantly depending on the time of day, so always plan ahead to avoid getting stuck!

What is parking like in Los Angeles?

Parking in Los Angeles varies greatly from neighborhood to neighborhood. Downtown LA offers plenty of paid parking garages and a handful of lots throughout downtown Los Angeles. In busier areas like Hollywood and Santa Monica, street parking is limited and closely monitored, with time limits and permit zones in effect.

Are there toll roads in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles doesn’t have many traditional toll roads, but there are several express lanes on major freeways that carry fees, designed to improve the flow of commuter traffic in rush hour. These include the Metro ExpressLanes on the I-10 and I-110, which require a FasTrak transponder and use variable pricing based on traffic levels. Outside the city, you may encounter toll roads in nearby Orange County, on routes like SR-73, 133, 241, and 261. Before you hit the road, use the Turo app to confirm how you’ll pay for tolls.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Los Angeles?

Gas stations and electric vehicle (EV) chargers are both extremely easy to find throughout Los Angeles, especially on major roads frequently used by commuters. Reliable options for a quick fuel-up near the downtown LA area include the Shell at 504 W Olympic Boulevard, the Chevron at 1516 Main Street, and the 76 at 1600 W Olympic Boulevard. There are also a handful of stations scattered along Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard.

EV charging is widespread and continually growing in California’s biggest city. You’ll notice many ChargePoint and EVgo chargers in downtown parking garages, shopping malls, and hotels. Notable locations include The Grove (189 The Grove Drive), Santa Monica Place (395 Santa Monica Place), and various Westfields and IKEAs.

Do I need to rent a car in Los Angeles?

While Los Angeles has public transportation in the form of buses and the Metro rail, coverage is supremely limited for such a sprawling city. Many popular neighborhoods, beaches, and tourist attractions aren’t easily accessible without your own vehicle, which is why having a rental car here is so important. Get around faster and with more flexibility by renting a car in Los Angeles on Turo, and enjoy The City of Angels at your own pace.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
