Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2022

Car was in excellent condition making the driving a pleasure. The owner was available at pick up and by phone for the duration of the rental. He was very understanding when I had to bring the car back a little late due to a freeway accident that backed up traffic. It was an overall extremely pleasant and easy experience.

Top tips for renting a truck in Los Angeles

Planning on booking a truck rental in Los Angeles? From parking to choosing the right truck size for your rental period, here’s what you should know before picking up the keys.

Tips for driving a truck in Los Angeles

Driving a truck in LA can be tricky due to narrow streets and heavy traffic. Be mindful that truck handling means more length, width, and weight than a regular car. So it's essential to give yourself extra space when navigating tight turns and extra stopping time.

You'll need to pay extra attention on freeways too. With lots of lane merging and constant start-and-stop traffic, it can affect how a loaded truck handles. Leave more room for braking and avoid quick lane changes if your cargo is heavy.

Most modern pickups come with backup cameras, sensors, and lane-assist features. Use them when you can. They make navigating congested streets, steep driveways, and tight lots much safer and less stressful.

If you’re heading into canyon roads or coastal highways, take curves slowly and keep cargo secured, as crosswinds and elevation changes can shift the load.

What is parking a truck like in Los Angeles?

Parking a truck in LA can be challenging, especially in dense neighborhoods like Hollywood, Venice, and Downtown. Lots are tight, parking rules are strict, and enforcement officers are always circling. So staying alert to signs is essential.

Street parking varies by area. Expect a mix of metered parking, permit-only zones, and no-stopping zones. Red curbs and alley access points are heavily monitored, so avoid even partially blocking them.

Many parking garages have low height clearances. Always check the signage above before entering, as trucks often exceed the maximum height.

If you’re running errands or picking up furniture in busy neighborhoods, a mid-size truck will be far easier to maneuver and fit into tight spaces. Loading early in the morning, later at night, or during off-peak hours can also make the process much smoother.

Once you get into more suburban areas, parking becomes more manageable, but it’s still smart to watch for local restrictions and private-property rules.

How to choose the right type of truck for your Los Angeles trip

The right truck depends on what you're doing. Different choices apply to moving apartments, hauling gear for a shoot, or escaping the city for the weekend. Here’s what to consider:

Truck size: Full-size trucks are great for bigger moves, production gear, or bulky construction materials. Mid-size trucks are easier to park in tight LA neighborhoods and crowded streets.

Cargo capacity: Think about weight and volume. Furniture, event equipment, or renovation materials may need a larger bed or higher payload.

Seating: If you’re riding with friends to Malibu or need extra interior space for fragile items, an extended cab helps.

Drive type: 2WD is perfect for city driving. If you’re heading into Malibu Canyon or Big Bear, a truck with good traction is worth it.

Safety features: Look for backup cameras, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring — especially useful in tight parking lots, steep driveways, and heavy traffic.

Check the Turo app to find the right truck for your LA plans and book with confidence.

Loading a truck

Loading up your truck rental? Keep these tips in mind for a safe and easy trip with a loaded truck:

Check the truck’s maximum load capacity before hauling anything heavy, whether it’s furniture, construction supplies, or outdoor gear.

Distribute weight evenly to keep the truck stable and prevent your cargo from tipping over.

Secure items firmly with straps, ropes, or moving blankets. Sudden stops, winding roads, and windy conditions can cause loose items to shift.

Check the parking signs. Watch for red curbs, no stopping zones, and street-sweeping hours before you park to load.

Avoid low-clearance garages. Check the height restrictions before entering garages.

Watch for coastal winds and winding canyon roads. Tie things down and keep heavier items low.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Los Angeles

Use apps like Google Maps or PlugShare to find the nearest gas station or EV charger in Los Angeles and check their hours before you go.

Los Angeles has plenty of gas stations along major roads like Alameda St and Washington Blvd, making it easy to fuel up while driving a rental truck. Keep in mind that many trucks require diesel, so always check the pump before filling.

Renting an EV truck or hybrid? Chargers are common across the city, including at shopping centers, hotels, parking lots, and gas stations.
