You can join free daily keeper talks and meet the cuddly crew in the outdoor enclosure that sits within the Daisy Hill Conservation Park. Not to mention, this isn't the only Koala centre in Brisbane - another great option is Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the world's first and largest koala sanctuary.

Cylinder Beach, North Stradbroke Island

North Stradbroke Island juts out from Brisbane’s mainland and is easily accessible by vehicle ferry. Watch the sunrise over the curve of the Earth from the protected shores of Cylinder Beach, with gentle waves that’ll delight families and the occasional impressive swell for surfers.

Top tips for hiring a car in Brisbane

Looking for expert tips when it comes to hiring a car in Brisbane? When driving on urban and regional roads in Brisbane, make sure to familiarise yourself with Brisbane's road rules, and opt for a vehicle that suits your travel needs and group size. Plus, be sure to check for any toll roads along your route and plan your trip accordingly.

Brisbane road rules

Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, with the speed limit ranging from 50km/hour on city and suburban roads to upwards of 100km/hour on most highways. The state of Queensland has strict rules against using mobile phones while driving, and you must keep your blood alcohol level (BAC) under 0.05 when driving if you are on your full license. When driving keep in mind that there may be animals present on the roads, so it's essential to pay attention to road signs which give you a good insight into whether animals frequent these areas. Kangaroos and wallabies in particular, are often drawn to the roadside so take caution in rural areas.

Navigating in and around the airport

Once you touch down at Brisbane Airport, follow the signs and directions to find the right terminals, baggage claim areas, and transportation options. There are a range of transport options available including a free shuttle bus, taxis and ride-sharing platforms to get to Brisbane City or your holiday rental. If you're planning on renting a car, you can find cars available on Turo at locations near all major airports in Brisbane. After arriving at Brisbane Airport, have your car delivered for pick-up and drop-off at the airport, your Brisbane hotel, or the address of your vacation rental to save time and hassle.

Brisbane's rush hour and busiest roads

Like all popular cities, Brisbane's peak traffic times are generally in the mornings from 7 am to 9 am and in the evenings from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. During these times, certain major roads and routes including Pacific Motorway (M1) and the Gateway Motorway can experience heavy traffic congestion. Planning your journey to avoid these peak hours or utilising alternative routes or using public transport around the city centre can help you avoid being stuck in traffic.

Toll roads in Brisbane and QLD

There are various toll roads across Brisbane and Queensland, and the toll road system is completely cashless and uses the toll payment provider Linkt. Many major roads, such as the Gateway Motorway and the Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7), AirportlinkM7, Go Between Bridge, Legacy Way, Logan Motorway and the Toowoomba Bypass are tolled.

Once you have booked a car, get in touch with your host to find out more about how to manage toll payments.

Parking in Brisbane CBD and central suburbs

Popular built-up areas in Brisbane’s central suburbs, like South Bank, are well-furnished with parking options that provide considerable discounted hour and day rates on weekends. Council car park rates start at around $5 for four hours (the same is charged for a flat evening fee) or $15 for anything over an eight-hour period.

Fortitude Valley has a mix of metered street parking and commercial parking garages. Some venues may offer validated parking for patrons, so it's worth checking in advance. There’s little in the way of free parking in these areas unless you’re looking to park at a shopping centre for a limited time.

Street parking in West End can be difficult to find, especially during peak times, but there are off-street parking lots and commercial garages available and walking or using public transit can be great alternatives for getting around areas that have limited parking options.

Explore Queensland

Brisbane is the golden gateway to idyllic tropical overnighters up north and adrenaline-pumping adventures further south — rent a car with Turo for an all-access pass.

Dreamworld is Australia’s largest theme park, and it’s only a 45-minute drive south of Brisbane. Make parking a breeze by hiring a sedan or compact SUV through Turo.

The Sunshine Coast: The Sunshine Coast is bounded by Moreton Bay Regional Council in the south, with its southernmost point just a half-hour drive from Brisbane CBD. The region stretches up to Noosa Shire in the northeast, which is a two-hour drive from Brissy.

Noosa: This lazy seaside town two hours’ drive from Brissy draws visitors in droves up the east coast. The popular holiday destination boasts excellent surf beaches and fine dining with ocean views in a balmy subtropical climate. Despite the crowds, Noosa remains a small town at heart.
