Airlie Beach is an excellent base for exploring the Whitsunday region by road, with easy access to coastal lookouts, national parks, waterfalls, and nearby beach towns. While driving conditions are generally relaxed, tropical weather can change quickly and some regional roads are winding in places. Before you set off, it's worth understanding local driving conditions, parking options, and a few practical tips for getting around the region.
Roads around Airlie Beach are generally well maintained, though some coastal and hinterland routes can become narrow, winding, or slippery during the wet season. Speed limits are clearly signed and may change through built-up areas and smaller towns, so it's important to pay attention to local conditions. Wildlife can also be active on quieter roads, particularly at dawn and dusk. Tropical storms can develop quickly during the wet season, bringing heavy rainfall and reduced visibility.
Parking around Airlie Beach can become busy during weekends, holidays, and peak tourism periods, especially near the lagoon and marina. Public car parks are available throughout town, though arriving earlier in the day tends to make life considerably easier. Some accommodations also offer parking.
No. The roads around Airlie Beach and throughout the Whitsundays are toll-free, making it easy to explore the region by car without additional road charges.
Fuel stations are available throughout Airlie Beach and Proserpine and along the main coastal routes heading through North Queensland. EV charging infrastructure is still developing across the region, though more select locations now offer charging access. If you’re planning longer day trips inland or towards quieter beaches, topping up fuel before leaving town is recommended.
Not necessarily, but having a car makes it much easier to explore the wider Whitsunday region. While Airlie Beach itself is compact and walkable, many of the area's waterfalls, beaches, national parks, and smaller coastal communities are most easily reached by road. A car gives you the flexibility to explore beyond the town centre and travel on your own schedule.

When you’re booking your first trip, you’ll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver’s license and some other information. In most cases, you’ll get approved immediately, and you’ll be set for all future road trips, day trips, and business trips!
Whitsunday Coast Airport: Many travellers arrange car rental Airlie Beach pickups near Whitsunday Coast Airport (often called Proserpine Airport by locals), especially when flying into Queensland for island holidays or longer coastal road trips. Picking up near the airport makes it easy to head straight towards Airlie Beach without juggling luggage onto buses or waiting around in the heat. The drive itself is simple too, with the road taking you through rolling countryside before the coastline finally appears.
Airlie Beach Main Street: Collecting your hire car near the main street keeps you close to restaurants, accommodation, the lagoon, and the marina precinct. It’s an ideal option for travellers who want a few slower-paced days in town before branching out towards waterfalls, beaches, and national parks. You’ll also have easy access to shops, fuel stations, and cafés.
Proserpine: Picking up your rental car near Proserpine is a practical option for travellers staying outside Airlie Beach or planning to explore more of the Whitsunday Coast. Located just inland from the beachside action, it provides straightforward access to major roads heading north and south through Queensland. It’s also free from the chaos of crowded tourist hubs.
- A Whitsundays holiday: Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, but there's plenty to explore on the mainland too. Having a car makes it easier to combine reef tours and island cruises with visits to beaches, waterfalls, lookouts, and other attractions along the Whitsunday Coast.
- A tropical road trip: The Whitsunday Coast is home to some of North Queensland's most scenic drives, linking coastal towns, beaches, national parks, and waterfront lookouts. A hire car gives you the flexibility to explore the region on your own schedule and discover destinations beyond Airlie Beach.
- A family getaway: From beach days and wildlife encounters to day trips across the region, family holidays often involve plenty of passengers and luggage. A larger vehicle can provide the space and comfort needed for travelling with children, beach gear, and everything else that comes with a Whitsundays getaway.
