Perched above the harbour entrance, Fort Scratchley is one of the few Australian forts to have fired on the enemy during wartime. Tour the underground tunnels, watch the cannon firings, and soak up panoramic views across the coastline. As one of Newcastle's most significant historic landmarks, it offers a fascinating insight into the city's military and maritime past.
Just an hour inland, the Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region and a must on any Newcastle itinerary. Spend the day among cellar doors in Pokolbin, sample local produce, explore the region's gardens, or watch hot air balloons rise above the vineyards at dawn. With its rolling countryside, acclaimed wineries, and relaxed atmosphere, it's one of New South Wales' most popular day-trip destinations.
About 45 minutes north of Newcastle, Port Stephens delivers white sand beaches, dolphin cruises, and the towering Stockton Bight Sand Dunes. Tackle a quad bike tour, try sandboarding, or take the walking track up Tomaree Head for sweeping coastal views. The combination of beaches, national parks, and dramatic dune landscapes makes it a standout destination on the New South Wales coast.

Newcastle is a city made for driving, with the beaches in one direction and wine country in the other. A few local pointers help your hire car experience feel effortless from the very first turn of the wheel.
Speed limits across Newcastle generally default to 50 km/h on residential streets, increasing to 60–80 km/h on major roads and up to 110 km/h on the M1 Pacific Motorway. School zones are typically reduced to 40 km/h during posted hours. New South Wales road rules require seatbelts for all passengers, prohibit handheld mobile phone use while driving, and are enforced through a network of road safety and mobile phone detection cameras.
Traffic is generally manageable compared with Sydney, though congestion can occur around Hunter Street, the Pacific Highway, and key commuter routes during weekday peak periods. The M1 Pacific Motorway can also become busier on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, particularly for travellers heading between Newcastle, the Central Coast, and Sydney.
Weather can influence driving conditions throughout the year. Summer storms may reduce visibility and create wet road conditions, while morning fog is common in the Hunter Valley during cooler months. When travelling in poor weather, drive to the conditions, use headlights when required, and allow extra time for your journey.
Newcastle offers a mix of paid and free parking options throughout the city. In the CBD, you'll find metered street parking and off-street car parks, including council-operated facilities around Newcastle West, Honeysuckle, and the foreshore. Many paid parking areas can be accessed via the EasyPark app, while time limits and restrictions vary by location.
Free parking is generally easier to find in suburban areas, although popular coastal locations such as Nobbys Beach, Bar Beach, and Merewether can become busy on weekends, public holidays, and during the summer months. Arriving earlier in the day often provides the best chance of securing a convenient spot.
There are no toll roads in Newcastle itself. The M1 Pacific Motorway through the region is toll-free, though you'll encounter tolls on Sydney's motorway network if you drive further south down the coast.
Petrol stations are easy to find throughout Newcastle, with major brands including BP, Ampol, Shell, and 7-Eleven located across the city and along key routes such as the Pacific Highway and roads leading toward the Hunter Valley. Fuel prices generally follow the New South Wales fuel cycle, so prices can vary from week to week.
Newcastle is also one of the most EV-friendly cities in regional Australia, with an extensive public charging network across the city. Charging locations can be found in Newcastle West, Hamilton, Georgetown, Wallsend, Lambton, Mayfield, and the CBD, while additional charging options are available throughout the wider Hunter region. Before setting off, it's worth checking your preferred charging network's app for the latest charger locations and availability.
Newcastle has trains, buses, and a light rail line through the city centre, but some of the best of the region requires having your own car. The Hunter Valley cellar doors, the Port Stephens sand dunes, the beaches of the Central Coast, and the rainforest walks of Barrington Tops all sit beyond the reach of public transport. Hire a car through Turo, and you can browse a great selection of vehicles. Reserve in advance, pick up wherever suits, and let the Central Coast unfold at your own pace.
