Maitland History and Heritage

Maitland has a rich history and cultural heritage that began with the indigenous Wonnarua people and continues today. By 1835, Maitland was the second largest colonial settlement in New South Wales besides Sydney, and a number of important sites remain to tell its story. Visit the Maitland Gaol, which housed Australia's most notorious criminals for over 150 years, or visit the Grossman and Brough Houses for a taste of Maitland's affluent Victorian era. Maitland also features an abundance of heritage walks that allow you to explore the city while learning more about its history.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery

Located inside a stunning Federation Gothic building, this community-led art gallery showcases a significant collection of contemporary Australian art. This dynamic gallery hosts a rotating schedule of up to 25 exhibitions per year alongside its permanent collection, and access is free all-year round. There's also an artisanal store with unique Australian wares, and a popular cafe to keep you fuelled as you explore. If you didn't get your fill at the gallery, other town highlights like the Maitland Regional Museum and Maitland Park are just a short walk away.

Hunter Valley Wine Country

Maitland is on the doorstep of Hunter Valley Wine Country, which is famous for being the oldest commercial wine region in Australia, with the first vines planted over 200 years ago. This rich legacy has been maintained by a number of founding families that still maintain wineries to this day. While you're in Maitland, you can't miss a drive to a winery like Tranquil Vale Vineyard or Saltire Estate to bask in the summer sun and try the world-famous Hunter Valley Semillon, acclaimed for its lean, crisp and zesty notes, or elegant and medium-bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz. Make sure to bring your designated driver.
