Magnetic Island

Just eight kilometres off the coast, Magnetic Island feels like a different world. The SeaLink passenger ferry runs often from town, while Magnetic Island Ferries operates the vehicle service for those bringing their own car across. Hike the Forts Walk for koala spotting, swim at Florence Bay, and stay until sunset. Book ahead for the vehicle ferry on busy weekends.

Billabong Sanctuary

About 20 minutes south of Townsville on the Bruce Highway, Billabong Sanctuary is a 25-acre wildlife park where visitors can get up close with koalas, kangaroos, crocodiles, and cassowaries in a natural bushland setting. Daily keeper talks and animal encounters run on a set schedule, so it's worth planning your visit around the experiences you'd most like to see.

Wallaman Falls and Girringun National Park

Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall thunders 268 metres into a rainforest gorge about two hours northwest of Townsville. The drive winds through cane fields and into the Wet Tropics, ending at a lookout with sweeping views across Girringun National Park. The journey highlights a different side of North Queensland, where rainforest-clad mountains rise not far from the region's palm-lined coastline.

Top tips for renting a car in Townsville

North Queensland runs on saltwater and red dirt, and a few local pointers help your experience feel effortless from the first turn of the wheel. These tips cover driving conditions, parking, and fuelling so you can spend less time sorting logistics and more time enjoying the ride.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Townsville?

Speed limits in Townsville generally range from 50 km/h on residential streets to 100 km/h on sections of the Bruce Highway outside the city. School zones operate at reduced speeds during posted times, and Queensland enforces road rules through speed and mobile phone detection cameras.

Traffic is typically lighter than in Australia's major capitals, though delays can occur on key routes such as Charters Towers Road and sections of the Bruce Highway during peak commuting periods. Drivers should also expect increased traffic on regional roads during holiday periods and peak tourism seasons.

The wet season, which typically runs from November to April, can bring heavy rainfall and localized flooding. If you're planning to explore beyond Townsville, particularly towards Wallaman Falls, Paluma Range National Park, or other inland destinations, check road conditions before you travel and never attempt to drive through floodwaters.

What is parking like in Townsville?

Townsville City Council offers free two-hour parking on parts of Cleveland Terrace, Flinders Street, Sturt Street, and Wills Street, with paid two-hour and four-hour zones throughout the rest of the CBD. Wilson Parking operates undercover options near the Castletown Shoppingworld and around the waterfront, and most major shopping centres have ample free parking. Read signage carefully wherever you park, as time limits vary block to block.

Beach parking along the Strand and around Castle Hill is generally easy outside event days, though spots fill up quickly on weekends and during Cowboys home games at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Are there toll roads in Townsville?

There are no toll roads in Townsville or anywhere in North Queensland. The Bruce Highway and all major routes through the region are free to drive, so there are no extra fees to factor in when driving a rental vehicle.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Townsville?

Petrol stations are spread across Townsville with BP, Shell, Caltex, and 7-Eleven locations along Charters Towers Road, the Bruce Highway, and through the suburbs. Top up before heading to Wallaman Falls or out toward Charters Towers, as stations thin out past the city limits, and prices tend to climb the further inland you drive.

If you pick up an EV through Turo, Townsville's charging network is strong and growing. Public EV chargers operate on Palmer Street in South Townsville, Chargefox fast chargers sit at James Cook University, and additional stations are spread across The Strand, Flinders Street, Castletown Shoppingworld, and Stockland Townsville. The Queensland Electric Super Highway connects Townsville along the Bruce Highway in both directions, making longer trips entirely doable in electric vehicles.

Do I need to rent a car in Townsville?

Not necessarily, but having a car makes it much easier to explore Townsville and the wider North Queensland region. While public transport serves parts of the city, many of the area's best-known destinations sit well beyond the bus network, including Wallaman Falls, Charters Towers, Paluma Range National Park, the Burdekin region, and the coastal route north towards Cardwell. A car gives you the flexibility to explore these destinations on your own schedule.
