Top tips for hiring a car in Wollongong

placeholder

Wollongong's rush hour and busiest roads

Unlike the popular cities of Sydney and Melbourne, you can expect less crowds on the roads in Wollongong. But, certain roads experience higher traffic during peak hours and popular times of the day (such as before and after work hours as well as school drop off and pick up times), including Princess Highway, Crown Street, Memorial Drive and Mount Ousley Road.

Wollongong road rules

Like all places in Australia, remember to drive on the left side of the road, adhere to the speed limit by following handy signs and be aware of pedestrian crossing and school zones in neighbourhood areas. Plus, stick to the legal Blood Alcohol Concentrate (BAC) limit of under 0.05. Plus, remember that outside cities like Sydney, drive cautiously on regional and urban roads. Native animals can be present on the roads (especially in the early mornings, late afternoons and nights), so drive cautiously to avoid collisions.

Airport advice: Navigating in and around Shellharbour Airport

As a regional airport with only two direct flights to and from Shellharbour Airport daily, it provides a more relaxed atmosphere than larger airports, making check-in and security procedures generally quicker and more straightforward. Upon arrival, exit the terminal building and follow the signs to the carpark to pick up your car (if your host is delivering to the airport). From there, you'll have easy access to the roads connecting you to the Wollongong city centre and surrounding towns.
