MINI CONVERTIBLE 2023

We came to Brisbane and wanted to do a road trip outside the city. Not only did we get a superb car that was clean and the handover was a great experience, but we also got lots of tips about where to go - we followed those tips and had an amazing trip. When we handed the car back, the experience was equally smooth and friendly. Whenever we’re back in Melbourne, we will come again!

Top tips for renting a car in Brisbane

Brisbane's road rules are simple to follow, especially if you're familiar with driving in Australia. To make sure you're safe and stress-free on the roads, here's a quick overview.

How does airport pickup work near Brisbane Airport?

Brisbane Airport is one of the busiest hubs in the country, so booking through Turo is an easy way to avoid the crowded terminals. After booking online, check the Turo app to confirm your pickup point just outside the airport grounds. Once you land, head to the confirmed pickup location and collect the keys either from a secure drop box or during an in-person handover, as arranged in advance.

How does drop-off work near Brisbane Airport?

At the end of your trip, return the vehicle to the same spot you collected it from, or drop it off at another nearby location arranged in advance. Leave the keys in a secure place, and if you're parking in a secure garage, take a ticket on entry and place it inside the car to allow for a smooth exit.

How far is Brisbane Airport from the CBD?

Brisbane Airport is approximately 14 kilometres northeast of the CBD, and the drive usually takes around 20 minutes via Airport Drive and the M7 motorway. Expect delays during peak times, especially on weekday mornings and late afternoons during the work rush.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Brisbane?

In Brisbane, you'll notice the same standard driving laws as the rest of Australia. Drive on the left-hand side, stick within speed limits, obey road signage, and always wear a seatbelt. Across the country, it's illegal to use a hand-held phone while driving, and hefty penalties apply.

Speed limits vary across Brisbane, but typically start at 40 kilometres per hour (km/h) in school zones, followed by 50 km/h in built-up areas and the CBD, 60 to 80 km/h on bigger roads, and 100 to 110 km/h on motorways.

The city is a mix of motorways, tunnels, and suburban streets. Brisbane's hilly terrain means you'll encounter steep roads in older suburbs like Paddington and Red Hill. Wet weather can also be intense during storm season — which is a little unpredictable in this tropical part of Australia — so take extra caution on slippery roads, use your windscreen wipers, and slow down during heavy downpours.

CBD driving is busy but manageable, with clear signage and multiple river crossings at the Story Bridge, Captain Cook Bridge, and Go Between Bridge. Plan ahead if you're unfamiliar with the one-way grid system, as some streets change direction without warning. Major surrounding roads like the M1, M3, and Airport Link tend to flow well outside peak periods, but can become heavily congested during rush hour. Use a maps app or GPS to check your ETA before you leave and avoid any unexpected delays.

What is parking like in Brisbane?

Parking in the Brisbane CBD can be competitive and pricey, especially during the work week. The Secure Parking garage on Charlotte Street (201 Charlotte Street), King George Square Car Park (100 Adelaide Street), and Queens Plaza Car Park (250 Edward Street) are reliable options close to major attractions like museums and shops. Street parking is also available but mostly metered, with strictly enforced, often short time limits.

In other popular areas such as South Bank, West End, Milton, and Fortitude Valley, you'll find more accessible parking through multi-storey car parks or dedicated council parking lots. While it's not tough to secure a spot, keep fees in mind, as hourly parking can become expensive quickly.

Are there toll roads in Brisbane?

Yes, Brisbane has several toll tunnels and motorways, including the Airport Link (M7), the Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7), Legacy Way, the Go Between Bridge, and the Gateway Motorway. While it's possible to avoid tolls on your routes throughout Brisbane, this may add a big chunk of time to your journey. Before setting off in your Brisbane car hire, take a moment to review any toll roads along your route and understand how toll charges are handled. You can find payment details and trip information in the Turo app to help avoid surprises.

Where can I find petrol stations and EV chargers in Brisbane?

Petrol stations are plentiful in Brisbane's suburbs, but you won't find many in the CBD itself. To fuel up close to the city centre, try BP Milton (119 Milton Road), Liberty Highgate Hill (22 Gladstone Road), or BP Newstead (20 Commercial Road). As you leave the hustle and bustle, options open back up, with more scattered along main roads and motorways.

Electric vehicle (EV) chargers and charging stations are expanding across Brisbane city. Fast-charging stations are available at Brisbane Quarter (300 George Street), South Bank (Little Stanley Street), Toombul Shopping Centre, and Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. If you've got more time on your hands, many hotels and shopping centres provide slower overnight charging options.

Do I need to rent a car in Brisbane?

Public transport in Brisbane includes trains, buses, and ferries, but services are often quite spaced out depending on the suburb, with waits of up to 30 minutes on weekends and during off-peak times. If you're planning to explore beyond the CBD like Mount Coot-tha, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, or the Scenic Rim a car hire near Brisbane Airport from Turo will give you much more flexibility and freedom.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Brisbane?

Booking a car rental near Brisbane Airport gives you access to a huge range of vehicles, from small sedans to compact SUVs, extended SUVs, minivans, sports cars, electric vehicles and more, all at affordable rates. The full-size Nissan Pathfinder SUV is great if you need space for passengers or luggage, whereas the sporty BMW 6 Series convertible is the perfect car to cruise around in, whether you’re staying in Brisbane or taking a road trip down the coast.

Whatever kind of visit you're planning, you're bound to find a wide selection of car rental options to suit your plans on Turo. Plus, unlike traditional car rental companies, Turo guarantees a flexible, fuss-free rental experience with no hidden fees and no last-minute substitutions — you'll always receive the exact rental car you selected at checkout.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Brisbane?

The cost of car rental in Brisbane can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rental in Brisbane, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
