Melbourne: the Victorian capital city brimming with arts, culture, great food and better coffee, and no shortage of things to see and do. It’s little wonder Melbourne has consistently been named the most liveable city in Australia. Beyond the city centre, though, there’s a bevy of regional towns and villages, outdoor adventures, cultural attractions, and wildlife experiences that are well worth exploring. Luckily, once you land at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport or Avalon Airport, the state really is your oyster. Because Victoria is quite compact, you can venture to almost anywhere outside the city relatively easily by car. Ready to get going? Pick up a car near Melbourne Airport and hit the road.

This regional city has something for everyone. If you’re keen to meet some local fauna, add Ballarat Wildlife Park and Ballarat Bird World to your visit list. If your interests lie more in the city’s history, you can’t go past Ballarat Tramway Museum and Sovereign Hill, an outdoor museum that depicts Ballarat’s past as a gold rush town. Foodies and wine connoisseurs are also well taken care of with excellent restaurants, bars, breweries, and wineries dotted around the place.
Jutting out below Melbourne and packed with quaint villages, coastal towns, beaches, wineries, and winding country roads, the Mornington Peninsula is a top region to journey through. The central hub of Mornington has fantastic places to eat, drink, and shop, while seaside spots including Rye, Sorrento, Portsea, and St Andrews Beach are great for beach trips.
The Great Ocean Road is one of Victoria’s best driving routes, filled with rugged cliffside passages, the odd hairpin turn, and epic views over the Southern Ocean. Make sure to visit notable sites like Loch Ard, the Twelve Apostles, the Grotto, and the expansive and striking Port Campbell National Park. You can drive as much or as little of the route as you want, making it doable as a single- or multi-day trip.

Everything went very smoothly, much cheaper & easier than dealing with the big car rental companies.
Definitely going to ditch the traditional car rental companies and use Toro.
Turo is no harder than standard car rental but the value is 1000% better.

If you’re only in Melbourne for a weekend or a quick business trip and would prefer to stay within the city limits, you definitely won’t have trouble finding something to do.
You could really spend a whole day at Fed Square. Head to ACMI (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image), attend one of the square’s many regular events, or enjoy a meal at the numerous eateries. Rather eat further afield? Fed Square is in a convenient location near some of Melbourne’s best restaurants, including Chin Chin, Supernormal, and Movida.
The NGV is Melbourne’s biggest and best art hub, an imposing building filled with works by Australian, Indigenous, and international artists. The rotating roster of exhibitions is always top-notch, so no matter when you’re visiting Melbourne, you’re bound to catch something great. But rest assured the permanent collection is very good too.
Melbourne’s most popular city beach has an electric energy. Walk along the esplanade, wander down Acland Street and sample cuisines from around the world, head to Luna Park and hop on a ride, catch a show at the historic Palais Theatre, or drop by at sundown to enjoy the buzzing nightlife.
