Top tips for renting a car on the Gold Coast

Driving on the Gold Coast is beautiful and smooth, even when traffic picks up. Before you touch down on the GC, brush up on these tips for cruising along the area's coastal roads.

How does airport pickup work near Gold Coast Airport?

When you book a rental car near Gold Coast Airport with Turo, skip the rental counter, grab your luggage from the baggage carousels, and head to a pre-arranged, off-airport collection spot. After confirming your booking, check the Turo app to confirm a convenient pickup location. You cannot pick up or drop off your car rental directly from Turo on Gold Coast Airport grounds — but there are plenty of nearby spots. When you land, retrieve the keys in person or from a secure drop box, and you'll be well on your way to exploring the Gold Coast.

How does drop-off work near Gold Coast Airport?

At the end of your trip, return the vehicle to the confirmed drop-off location near Gold Coast Airport, unless an alternative return point has been arranged in advance. Follow the provided instructions for leaving the keys securely. If returning to a secure car park, take a ticket on entry and place it inside the vehicle to allow for a smooth exit.

How far is Gold Coast Airport from the CBD?

Gold Coast Airport sits right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales, around 25 kilometres south of Surfers Paradise, the city's unofficial CBD. The drive can take anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Fast-track your journey by following the M1 (Pacific Highway) or enjoy the scenic route along the Gold Coast Highway.

What are the road rules and driving conditions on the Gold Coast?

Like the rest of Australia, the Gold Coast follows left-hand driving with clear speed limits, starting at 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) in most urban areas, 60 to 70 km/h on major roads, and 100 to 110 km/h on sections of the M1 motorway. School zones operate at 40 km/h on weekdays from 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm. As you would anywhere, always follow road signs, wear a seatbelt, and avoid using your phone while driving.

The Gold Coast Highway in particular slows down during summer holidays and on weekends, as traffic mounts around beach suburbs like Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, and Coolangatta. Expect heavier traffic when major events are on, including the Gold Coast Marathon and Schoolies.

Most inland areas feature quiet suburban streets and well-maintained roads, although some hinterland routes — like those leading up to Springbrook and Tamborine Mountain — are narrow, winding, and require careful driving.

The Gold Coast boasts 300 days of sunshine per year, but that doesn't make it exempt from rain. This tropical part of the world often receives torrential downpours, especially in summer, and many spots of the Coast are prone to flooding. Always check conditions before you drive, and if you're in a flood warning zone, reconsider your need for car travel.

What is parking like on the Gold Coast?

Parking on the gorgeous Gold Coast is generally easier than in larger cities like Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Surfers Paradise has several secure car parks, including the Bruce Bishop Car Park (10 Beach Road) and the Chevron Renaissance Car Park (3240 Surfers Paradise Boulevard), but most drivers opt for on-street options, unless parking for an extended period. In Surfers Paradise, parking is metered by the hour — just be sure to get in early if you're visiting the beach and want a good spot!

Other busy suburbs like Broadbeach, Burleigh, and Southport rely predominantly on street parking, most of which is now metered. However, you might be lucky to snag a free space if you look down side streets and exercise a bit of patience. Shopping centres like Pacific Fair and Robina Town Centre have ample parking on-site.

Are there toll roads on the Gold Coast?

No, the Gold Coast does not have any toll roads, so you can drive around the city — from busy Surfers Paradise to laid-back Tweed Heads — without worrying about hidden fees or charges. However, if you plan on visiting Brisbane during your time in sunny Queensland, there are several toll roads here, including on the M7 (AirportLink) up to Brisbane Airport. If your route includes Brisbane’s toll roads, check the vehicle listing and trip details in the Turo app to understand how toll payments are managed before you begin driving.

Where can I find petrol stations and EV chargers on the Gold Coast?

Petrol stations are easy to find on the Gold Coast, with options from Shell, BP, 7-Eleven, United, and more on most major thoroughfares, including the Gold Coast Highway, Bermuda Street, Southport Nerang Road, and the Pacific Motorway (M1). In Surfers Paradise, try local service stations like the 7-Eleven at 100 Ferny Avenue or the Shell at 2824 Gold Coast Highway for a quick fuel-up.

Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are also widely available, with fast chargers usually found at shopping centres like The Strand in Coolangatta, Southport's Australia Fair, Pacific Fair in Broadbeach, and Robina Town Centre. You'll also notice charging points at council-run parking garages and car parks, and occasionally at car dealerships.

Do I need to rent a car on the Gold Coast?

Yes, you absolutely need to rent a car when visiting the Gold Coast. The tram, train and bus networks are still growing, making it difficult to get around the city freely without your own vehicle. With a car hire from Turo on the Gold Coast, you'll enjoy the flexibility to explore at your own pace, whether you want to travel up to picturesque Mount Tamborine, shop 'til you drop at Pacific Fair, or embark on one of the area's many gorgeous coastal drives.

What rental car types can I find on Turo on the Gold Coast?

When you hire a car from Gold Coast Airport using Turo, you'll have your pick of a wide range of vehicles, from large SUVs to budget-friendly small cars, luxe premium models, coastal cruisers, and much more.

Families and beachgoers with lots of gear will love SUVs like the Suzuki Jimny and the Toyota RAV-4, whereas larger groups might prefer a multi-seater van rental like the KIA Carnival. Looking for something that stands out? Browse deluxe vehicles like the Land Rover Defender, Tesla Model 3, and Porsche 718 convertible.

Booking with Turo doesn't just guarantee freedom and flexibility to explore the Sunshine State — it also gives you access to affordable car rentals and a reliable, seamless booking experience. Pick the perfect rental car at checkout and enjoy peace of mind that you’ll receive that exact vehicle when you arrive.
