Parking is straightforward outside peak exercise hours, and having your own rental car lets you enjoy it without watching the clock.
Just a short ferry ride away, "Maggie" is packed with beaches, walking trails, snorkelling spots, and those unmistakable North Queensland landscapes. Having a hire car on the mainland makes the trip simple especially if you’re stacking your day with multiple bays or want the flexibility to return whenever you'd like.
Dense rainforest, crystal creeks, and cool mountain air make Paluma Range an excellent day trip. A car gives you the freedom to follow winding roads, stop at lookouts, and explore swimming spots at your own pace. With no convenient public transport in the area, a rental car makes this experience possible.
Townsville’s climate is warm year-round, and many of its highlights are spread across generous distances — ideal for travellers who value flexibility. Booking your rental car online in advance helps you plan with confidence and secure the vehicle that suits your trip. Be sure to review your pickup details before arrival, and don’t underestimate the value of reliable air conditioning in North Queensland’s tropical heat.
After booking, check the Turo app for clear instructions on where to return your Townsville Airport car hire. Townsville Airport is only about a 10-minute drive from the Townsville city centre, making it one of the easiest regional arrivals in Australia. The drive is direct, well-signed, and ideal for travellers eager to drop bags and go exploring.
Townsville roads are generally relaxed, though you'll want to watch for changing speed zones and occasional tropical downpours. The city grid is easy to navigate, and highways leading north and south are open, scenic, and perfect for longer drives. Always carry your driver’s licence and stay alert for cyclists near the waterfront.
Parking around major attractions like The Strand, Castle Hill, and the CBD is usually manageable outside peak dining hours. Spaces near the waterfront fill quickly on weekends, so arriving early helps. For most national park adventures, parking is plentiful, and access roads are well-maintained.
There are no toll roads anywhere in Townsville or the wider North Queensland region. You can drive freely between beaches, rainforest, and city streets without worrying about extra fees.

EV chargers are available in several central locations, shopping centres, and near major accommodation areas. You’ll find everything from compact runarounds to premium options, each suited to a different flavour of North Queensland adventure. Opt for a compact model such as the Mazda 2 when navigating Townsville’s CBD, where its smaller footprint makes city driving and parking far more convenient.
A larger model like the Mazda CX-5 is ideal if you're heading out to places like the Paluma Range National Park or on longer coastal drives, offering comfort without the bulk of a large SUV. Vehicles like the Hyundai Santa Fe are ideal for travellers needing extra room for bags, beach gear, or family supplies.
For those who prefer a touch of refinement, the Audi A5 delivers smooth driving and well-deserved comfort after a warm day exploring Castle Hill or the Strand. Whatever your plans, Turo lets you pick from a range of rental vehicles that feel like the perfect fit.
