Everything you need to know about Sydney car rental
If you're picking up a rental car from Sydney Airport, familiarise yourself with the airport layout and the location of taxi ranks, car parks and public transport options (if you're planning to pick up your car in the CBD). If you're picking up your car from the airport, find out exactly where to meet your host or find your ride. To beat the exhaustion after your long-haul flight, why not take a quick cab to your hotel and arrange for your car to be delivered there instead?
Before hitting the road in Sydney, familiarise yourself with Australian road rules and regulations. Remember that Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, seatbelts must be worn at all times and pay attention to speed limits and other road signs to ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience. If you're driving in regional areas, be aware that animals and wildlife can wander onto the roads. Be sure to drive to the speed limit and do not swerve suddenly, as this can cause cars to roll off the road. Plus, full-license drivers in NSW have a legal BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) limit of under 0.05.
Sydney’s rush hour and busiest roads: Like most cities, the twists and turns between major urban roads like Pitt Street, Military Road, George Street and Parramatta Road experience congestion during peak hours. Make sure to check traffic conditions ahead of time and avoid major transit lanes if possible. Take the Cross City Tunnel to avoid the havoc of pedestrians and cyclists making their way around Darling Harbour, World Square and the broader CBD.
Tolls in Sydney: Sydney has several toll roads, including the M2, M4, M5, and Cross City Tunnel. Many cars come with an electronic toll tag, but it's essential to check if your hire car has a toll tag. If your rental car doesn't have a toll tag, you may need to pay tolls manually online or at designated locations.
Parking in Sydney: You should be able to find parking fairly easily throughout the streets of Sydney, with the exception being in the heart of the popular harbour area, where streetside parking isn’t readily available. A 24-hour Wilson Parking garage is nearby on 2 Macquarie Street with direct access to the Sydney Opera House, along with other CBD parking garages and a direct City Circle train line that runs through the CBD to Circular Quay.
