David was communicative, pickup and drop off was easy with clear instructions, car drove well, overall very satisfied with our experience. Great cost friendly alternative to bigger car rental companies with a lot more flexibility, but come with the right expectations (i.e. don't expect a squeaky clean car)

Ford MUSTANG 2016

Mr. John upgraded my rental car free of charge, which let me experience the charm of a GT for the first time. This Mustang made my Great Ocean Road trip incredibly enjoyable. Meanwhile, Mr. John thoughtfully prepared an umbrella and water in the car. I will definitely rent a car from him again when I come to Melbourne next time.

Kia CERATO 2019

The car rental process was very easy and smooth. Suraj, the owner, personally brought the car key to the meeting point, which I really appreciated. I prefer this much more than using a lockbox, as I’ve had issues with passcodes before. The car was clean, easy to use, and very comfortable to drive. Communication with the owner was excellent — he was easy to contact and replied to messages quickly. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely recommend this rental.

Holden BARINA 2013

Great car, runs smoothly and good to get around the city and out of the city on a longer haul. Some minor parts not quite at full function such as the side mirror tilting (this could be fixed by changing the angle by hand) but primarily these were cosmetic. Pick up was really easy, once I figured out the lock box, bluetooth functionality worked and car was comfortable and warm to drive, and clean to arrive at. Overall great value and great location, would rent again.

This is possibly my new favourite thing regarding car hire, I only came across Turo last week, when I need to book a car late Sunday night for an early Monday start, and could not find any of the traditional car hire places open or able to accomodate, unless I went to the airport. I found Turo and Ajay and booked my car very late Sunday night and hoped for the best for 7am start, Ajay responded immediately, a convenient pick up location, a super convenient process, car was immaculate, and to top it all off, I was able to end the journey at my place and Ajay came and met me at mine to take back the car, so I did not have to worry about transport back to mine. Phenonemal platform and even more than phenomenal host, I willl never use a traditional car hire place again, (note here that not every Turo experience seems great with lots of hosts appearing to cancel with little notice, not Ajay) book, book, book ... highly highly recommended.

Brilliant car. Honestly one of the best ive driven. It is very fuel efficient but gutsy at the same time. This car is more than it first appears to be on the surface, genuinely loaded with features and yet it sips fuel. Would definitely drive this again so thank you to the owner for the opportunity.

Planning ahead makes exploring this gorgeous coastline smooth from the moment you land. These tips help you move quickly from Whitsunday Coast Airport to palm-fringed roads, so your holiday stays focused on the reef, not logistics. Think of this as your guide to a seamless start.

How does airport pickup work near Whitsunday Coast Airport?

Once your booking is confirmed, your host will share a nearby meeting spot so you can step out of the terminal building, skip the usual shuffle toward shuttle buses, and walk straight to your waiting car. It’s an easy handover –– perfect when you want to head for Shute Harbour or the reef with zero delay.

How does drop-off work near Whitsunday Coast Airport?

Returning your car is just as smooth. Confirm a nearby drop off location so you can pull in, park, and hand over the keys without circling for ages or dealing with queues. From there, it’s a short, simple stroll back toward the airport entrance, giving you time to gather your things and get flight-ready.

How far is Whitsunday Coast Airport from the CBD?

Whitsunday Coast Airport sits roughly 25 minutes from Proserpine’s town centre and about 30 minutes from Airlie Beach. With your rental car, you can bypass bus timetables, skip public transportation and get straight onto the open road.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in the Whitsundays?

Local roads around Proserpine and Airlie Beach are easy to navigate, with clear signage and mostly single-lane highway stretches. The Bruce Highway connects key towns, but traffic can build during peak holiday seasons, so allow extra time when passing through major intersections.

Weather plays a role in driving conditions, especially during the wet season from December to March. Heavy rain can reduce visibility, and occasional flooding affects lower inland roads. Always check Queensland traffic updates before longer drives.

Speed limits depend on area: 50 km/h in built-up zones, 80–100 km/h on rural roads and up to 110 km/h on major highways. Wildlife is common at dawn and dusk, particularly wallabies near forested land, so keep an eye out on shaded stretches.

What is parking like in the Whitsundays?

Parking in Airlie Beach is generally straightforward, especially around the lagoon precinct and along Waterson Way. Dedicated car parks are available near the Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour, making it easy to find parking before boat transfers or reef tours. In Proserpine, street parking is typically abundant and close to local shops and cafés.

Are there toll roads in the Whitsundays?

There are no toll roads in this region. Driving in tropical Queensland is toll-free from Proserpine to Shute Harbour.

Where can I find petrol stations and EV chargers in the Whitsundays?

You’ll find petrol stations along the Bruce Highway in Proserpine, as well as multiple options throughout Airlie Beach, including stations on Shute Harbour Road. Most are conveniently placed for topping up before day trips or island transfers.

EV chargers are available in Airlie Beach at the Port of Airlie car park and selected hotels. Proserpine also has public charging points, making the region a suitable choice for travellers planning an electric-friendly journey.

Do I need to rent a car in the Whitsundays?

Hiring a car in the Whitsundays unlocks everything that makes this region unforgettable. The best beaches, lookouts and swimming holes are scattered between Airlie Beach, Proserpine and Shute Harbour, and public transport won’t reach many of them. A rental car lets you move on your own rhythm — chasing early-morning light at Cedar Creek Falls, cruising the coast after sunset, or weaving into Conway National Park for a quiet bushwalk. It’s the simplest way to explore a landscape where every road leads to another hidden corner of tropical Queensland.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays opens up beautifully with the right set of wheels. On Turo, you’ll find options suited to island-hopping day trips, rainforest hikes and long hours on the road under tropical skies. Choose from the following vehicle classes, including, but not limited to:

- SUV rental: Ideal for coastal drives and rainforest detours. Popular choices like the Toyota RAV4 or Mazda CX-5 offer space, comfort and confidence on winding routes around Airlie Beach.

- Economy car rental: Light, nimble and fuel-friendly. A Toyota Corolla or Hyundai i30 is perfect for quick trips between the marina, Shute Harbour and local lookouts.

- Luxury SUV rental: For travellers who want premium comfort on every stretch of the Bruce Highway. Models like the BMW X5 or Audi Q7 pair smooth handling with elevated interiors.

- Sedan rental: Reliable and relaxed for small groups or couples. A Kia Cerato or Honda Accord handles scenic drives and in-town errands with ease.

- Ute rental: Handy for adventurers carrying paddleboards, fishing gear or bulky beach sets. A Toyota Hilux suits exploring and gear-heavy itineraries.

- Sports car rental: Add a little flair to your holiday. A Ford Mustang turns a simple cruise to Cedar Creek Falls into a memory before you even leave the car park.

How much does it cost to rent a car in the Whitsundays?
