Top tips for renting a car in Dallas

With its sprawling layout and iconic Texas charm, Dallas is best explored with the freedom of your own wheels. From the urban pulse of Deep Ellum to the serene trails of White Rock Lake, having a rental car gives you the flexibility to explore every corner — and avoid the sweltering summer heat while you’re at it. Keep these top car rental tips in mind for a smooth driving experience in Dallas and beyond.

How does airport pickup work at Dallas Love Field Airport?

Forget the shuttle bus shuffle. At Dallas Love Field Airport, you'll be able to collect your airport car rental from the parking garages A, B and C, which are conveniently located just a short walk from the terminal. Check the Turo app for specific instructions from your host on where to meet, and keep an eye out for the Turo-branded vehicle placard.

How does drop-off work at Dallas Love Field Airport?

Returning your rental car at Dallas Love Field Airport is as smooth as a Texas drawl. Drive back to the airport and park your car in one of the approved parking garages (parking garages A, B and C). Don’t forget to leave the parking ticket in the vehicle and notify your host of the exact drop-off location via the Turo app.

How far is Dallas Love Field Airport from Downtown Dallas?

Just a quick six-mile drive, Dallas Love Field Airport is about a 15-minute cruise to Downtown Dallas — barring any traffic snarls on Mockingbird Lane. With your rental car, you can glide straight to iconic spots like the Sixth Floor Museum or the Reunion Tower in no time.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Dallas?

Dallas drivers are known for their pedal-heavy tendencies, so stay alert, especially on highways like I-35 and the Dallas North Tollway. Speed limits range from 35 mph in residential areas to 70 mph on major freeways. In wet weather, roads can get slippery, so take it easy — especially during those notorious summer thunderstorms.

What is parking like in Dallas?

Downtown Dallas is a maze of metered spots and multi-level garages, with lots of parking options near hotspots like the Dallas Arts District and Klyde Warren Park. For a quieter scene, head to Bishop Arts District, where street parking is a bit more forgiving. Just keep an eye out for signs — some areas enforce strict tow-away zones.

Are there toll roads in Dallas?

Yes, Dallas has its share of toll roads, including the Dallas North Tollway and President George Bush Turnpike. If your Turo rental has a toll tag, the fees will be added to your booking, so you can zip through toll plazas without breaking stride.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Dallas?

Fuel up at well-known gas station chains like RaceTrac, Shell, and Chevron, especially near major highways and in the city’s commercial districts. For EV drivers, Dallas has a solid network of charging stations, with Level 2 chargers available at NorthPark Center and a Tesla Supercharger located on West Mockingbird Lane.

Do I need to rent a car in Dallas?

Absolutely. Dallas’s sprawling layout makes a rental car more of a necessity than a luxury. While public transit covers some areas, a rental car gives you the freedom to explore beyond downtown — think day trips to Fort Worth or shopping sprees at NorthPark Center. With Turo, you can choose from a range of vehicles to suit any itinerary, whether you’re headed to a business meeting in Uptown or cruising to White Rock Lake for a sunset picnic.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Dallas?

Dallas roads are made for variety — and the lineup of rental cars available to book on Turo doesn’t disappoint. Whether you’re after the luxe feel of a BMW M8 for a date night downtown, the reliable practicality of a Toyota Corolla for everyday errands, or the sporty punch of a Chevrolet Corvette for a weekend thrill, you’re covered. Those with an eye for classic comfort can go for the Volkswagen Jetta, while off-road adventurers might lean toward a spacious SUV. Whatever the occasion, there’s a car waiting to elevate it on Turo.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Dallas?

The cost of car rental in Dallas can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Dallas, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

Frequently asked questions

What documents and paperwork do you need to rent a car on Turo?

To rent a car on Turo, you must create a Turo account, have a valid driver’s license, get approved to drive on Turo, and be 18 years old or older in the US, 21 years old or older in Australia, or 23 years old or older in Canada.

In the UK, you must be 21 years old or older and have held a UK or EU license for at least one year, or another driver’s license for at least two years. In France you must be 18 years old or older and have held a driver’s license for at least 2 years, longer for certain makes and models of vehicles.

When you’re booking your first trip, you’ll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver’s license and some other information. In most cases, you’ll get approved immediately, and you’ll be set for all future road trips, day trips, and business trips!

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn’t accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

Do I need to be a certain age to rent a car on Turo?

To rent a car on Turo in the US, you must be 18 years old or older.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

You don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

At which airports can I pick up my car on Turo?

Turo has agreements and pilot programs in place with a number of airports across the United States, and we’re always working hard to secure arrangements at even more airports to make your transition between air travel and car travel as smooth as possible, no matter what city.
