I had a great rental experience with Drew’s Turo car. The vehicle was clean and spacious. It handled well and got great gas mileage. The push button start and Bluetooth accessories were great features. The host was prompt with communication throughout the entire rental experience and was very helpful with any questions or concerns I had (didn’t have any on this trip because everything was perfect) 😊 I would highly recommend this Turo to anyone looking for a high quality car for a reasonable rental price. I would definitely book with this host again in the future.

Rent a car and explore Portland, OR

Things to do and places to see in Portland, OR

Portland is a city that opens outward. Beyond its bridges and neighborhoods, waterfalls spill through mossy canyons, coastal highways trace the Pacific, and forest roads disappear into quiet green. While the streetcar covers the inner part of the city, the places that define the Portland experience tend to sit just beyond it. Having a rental car turns Portland into a launch point to explore more of the coast.

Portland, OR

Forest Park

One of the largest urban forests in the country, Forest Park stretches for miles along Portland’s western edge. Trails like Wildwood and Lower Macleay feel genuinely removed from the city, especially early in the morning. Trailheads are spread out and easiest to reach by car, with roadside pull-ins that let you hike a little or a lot, depending on your day.

Columbia River Gorge

Just east of the city, the Columbia River Gorge delivers waterfalls, basalt cliffs, and sweeping river views in quick succession. Multnomah Falls is the headline stop, but the quieter trails nearby are just as impressive. A rental car makes it easy to arrive early, avoid peak crowds, and continue deeper along the Historic Columbia River Highway at your own pace.

Mount Hood

Mount Hood anchors the horizon and can provide a full day’s escape. In summer, alpine lakes and wildflower hikes surround Timberline Lodge. In winter, the roads lead to snow sports and cozy mountain stops. Public transport doesn’t reach far here, so driving gives you the freedom to explore the mountain’s many access points rather than just the main lodge.

Top tips for renting a car in Portland

These tips are designed to help you move through Portland with confidence, from timing your drive to choosing the right place to pick up the keys.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Portland?

Major routes like I-5, I-84, and US-26 carry most commuter traffic, with congestion peaking roughly 7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM, especially near river crossings. Residential streets often sit at 20–25 mph, while highways typically allow 55–65 mph. Speed cameras are common, particularly in school zones and high-injury corridors.

Rain defines much of the year, and slick pavement is a frequent companion from fall through spring. Winter rarely brings heavy snow into the city, but icy mornings can affect hills in neighborhoods like West Hills and Mount Tabor. Bridges may freeze before surrounding roads, so steady pacing matters when crossing the Willamette.

If you’re arriving through Portland International Airport (PDX), traffic flows smoothly compared to larger hubs, though early mornings and late afternoons can still tighten near the airport location. Planning drives outside peak windows often makes a noticeable difference.

What is parking like in Portland?

Parking is generally manageable, with a strong mix of street parking and structured options. Downtown areas around Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Pearl District offer several centrally placed garages, and parking garages are usually the easiest choice for longer stops or evenings out.

Neighborhoods are clearly zoned, and signage is reliable, so be sure to slow down and read it carefully. Locals often suggest using garages near transit corridors, then walking the last few blocks rather than circling busy streets.

Are there toll roads in Portland?

There are currently no toll roads within Portland or across Oregon’s major highways. All primary routes in and out of the city remain toll-free.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Portland?

Fuel stations are easy to find along corridors like Burnside Street, Powell Boulevard, and Lombard Street, with familiar chains spaced evenly across the city. You rarely need to plan far ahead to refuel before heading toward the coast or the Columbia River Gorge.

Portland is also well set up for drivers choosing an electric car. Public chargers appear in downtown garages, shopping centers, and neighborhoods such as the Pearl District, making the city a comfortable fit for EV travel.

Do I need to rent a car in Portland?

Having a rental car opens up the side of Oregon that locals love most. Forest Park, Mount Hood, the Oregon Coast, and wine country all sit beyond easy transit reach, and exploring them means freedom to linger and travel on your own timeline. On Turo, flexible car rental locations and clear details for each rental location make it simple to plan drives that stretch well beyond the city grid, letting you make the most of your time in the region.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
