The van made the trip. It fit all 8 of us and our luggage. Wasn’t the most luxury but the price was right.

Chris’ Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is extremely impressive. Handles like you’re driving a mid-size SUV. The diesel engine has plenty of power and it sips fuel. We had eight in our group and everyone had more than enough room. I drove it for about seven hours and when I returned it I wasn’t worn out. Enjoy your opportunity to drive this vehicle!!

Quality was decent for what we needed. It’s been an island vehicle for a while but it was nice for a large group. It took us where we needed to go.

What a great way to see the entire island of Maui! This van is very capable! Kept my food cold the entire trip in the fridge. Most nights I left the rear and side sliding door open, put down the screen netting and slept fantastic! Very easy to drive. Has window covers for total privacy as well. Steve was great with communication. Aloha!

I couldn’t ask for a better rental. The van was perfect for our family of 10 with plenty of room for all our luggage. When our flight got delayed several times Rudy and Danielle were prompt in responding to our request to extend our rental. We will definitely use then again next time we’re on Maui.

Things to do and places to see in Kahului

Kahului puts you within reach of Maui's most spectacular attractions, from the bamboo forests of Hana to the volcanic summit of Haleakala. Your rental car opens up access to Kanaha Beach Park for windsurfing, the historic town of Lahaina for whale watching, and Kihei's golden beaches for snorkeling adventures. You can explore the upcountry regions around Makawao, visit local farms and markets, or take the scenic drive through tropical rainforests and coastal cliffs that define this Hawaiian paradise.

Kanaha Beach Park for windsurfing and kiteboarding

Kanaha Beach Park offers world-class windsurfing conditions with consistent trade winds and protected waters perfect for both beginners and experts. You'll find ample parking near the beach, making it easy to unload your van with all your water sports equipment and picnic supplies. The park features restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, while the nearby Kahului airport provides a unique backdrop as planes take off over the ocean.

Iao Valley State Park and the iconic needle formation

Iao Valley showcases Maui's lush interior with its famous 1,200-foot green-covered rock pinnacle rising dramatically from the valley floor. Your rental vehicle easily navigates the paved road leading to the park, where you'll discover walking trails, tropical gardens, and panoramic views of this sacred Hawaiian site. The park offers convenient parking facilities and serves as a perfect escape from Kahului's coastal heat into the cool, misty mountains.

Historic Lahaina town and Front Street attractions

Lahaina transports you back to Hawaii's whaling era with its preserved 19th-century buildings, art galleries, and waterfront restaurants along famous Front Street. You can park your van near the harbor and explore the historic sites on foot, including the old courthouse and the massive banyan tree that covers nearly an acre. The town serves as a departure point for whale watching tours and sunset sailing adventures, with easy vehicle access to multiple parking areas.

How to get to Kahului

You can reach Kahului through several transportation options:
• By plane: Kahului Airport serves as Maui's main airport with direct flights from major mainland cities and inter-island connections
• By car: Drive from other parts of Maui via Highway 36, Highway 37, or Highway 380 depending on your starting location
• By ferry: Take the passenger ferry from Lanai, though this requires separate ground transportation to reach Kahului from the harbor

Top tips for renting a van in Kahului

Book your van rental early on Turo to secure the best vehicle options, especially during peak travel seasons when demand increases significantly. Look for vans equipped with features like all-wheel drive for upcountry adventures, backup cameras for easier parking in tight spaces, and keyless entry for beach convenience. Frequently asked questions in Kahului

Why rent a van in Kahului?

Renting a van in Kahului provides the perfect solution for exploring Maui with larger groups or families who need extra space for luggage and beach gear. Kahului airport serves as an ideal starting point for your Maui adventure, offering convenient van rental access for trips to destinations like Hana, Lahaina, and Kanaha Beach Park. A passenger van rental ensures everyone travels together comfortably while discovering Hawaii's stunning landscapes and attractions.

What should I expect when driving a van?

Driving a van requires adjusting to a larger vehicle with different handling characteristics compared to standard cars. You'll need to account for the van's height when navigating parking structures and low-clearance areas around Kahului and Maui. The passenger van offers excellent visibility from the elevated driving position, making it easier to spot scenic viewpoints and navigate Hawaii's winding coastal roads.

How do I park a van safely?

Park your van in designated spaces that accommodate larger vehicles, particularly around busy areas like Kahului airport and popular Maui destinations. Always check overhead clearances before entering covered parking areas, and use your mirrors extensively when maneuvering in tight spaces. Van rental requires extra attention to curb clearance and turning radius, especially in crowded locations near Lahaina or Kihei.

Which van suits families versus groups?

Families typically benefit from passenger van rental with flexible seating configurations that accommodate car seats and stroller storage for Hawaii adventures. Larger groups exploring Maui might prefer spacious vans with maximum seating capacity for trips between Kahului, Hana, and other island destinations. Consider your luggage requirements and group size when selecting the ideal van rental for your specific travel needs.

How can I stay comfortable on long van trips?

Ensure proper seat adjustments and take regular breaks during extended drives around Maui's scenic routes from Kahului to destinations like Hana. Pack snacks, water, and entertainment for passengers, especially when traveling with families in your passenger van rental. Plan your route to include rest stops at beautiful locations like Kanaha Beach Park where everyone can stretch and enjoy Hawaii's natural beauty.

What van safety features should I know?

Modern van rentals include essential safety features like multiple airbags, stability control, and backup cameras to assist with parking and maneuvering. Familiarize yourself with the vehicle's blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems before departing Kahului airport. Always ensure all passengers wear seatbelts and properly secure any cargo when traveling between Maui locations like Kihei, Lahaina, and other Hawaii destinations.

Is there long term car rental on Turo?

Yes there is — whether you want to rent a car for three days, three months, or even longer, you can on Turo. You'll find discounted prices on bookings lasting 3+, 7+, or 30+ days, so you can get the best deals and lowest rates possible by booking longer trips.

Is there unlimited mileage car rental on Turo?

Some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip; others set a daily distance limit — you'll need to check on each rental car individually to see if this service is provided. On the vehicle pages, you'll see the total miles or kilometers you're allowed to drive under the heading "Distance included." You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the "Unlimited distance" filter.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don't need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo. In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host's vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you'll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that's right for you. On each trip, you're covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.* In New York state, you'll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you're covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

To rent a car on Turo, you must create a Turo account, have a valid driver's license, get approved to drive on Turo, and be 18 years old or older in the US, 21 years old or older in Australia, or 23 years old or older in Canada. When you're booking your first trip, you'll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver's license and some other information. In most cases, you'll get approved immediately, and you'll be set for all future road trips, day trips, and business trips!
