Nestled between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, San Mateo offers a perfect blend of coastal charm and urban sophistication. This vibrant city boasts lush parks, diverse dining scenes, and easy access to both bay and ocean beaches. Booking a rental car in San Mateo allows you to fully explore its unique attractions and venture beyond to nearby tech hubs, picturesque coastal towns, and stunning natural landscapes, making your visit truly memorable and flexible.
The rental pickup and rental process was very easy. The car was in great shape and was perfect for our trip.
The host has been fantastic in maintaining communication from pre to post trip, particularly on collection and return procedures. This is extremely helpful for me as a first time user of Turo. MSTE is highly recommended as a trusted partner for your car rental needs. And the 992 speed yellow cabrio! It's a great car as expected. Well maintained. Well taken care of. Smooth. Highly capable. Quick. Brings a smile to my face. Thumbs up 👍👍👍

Jayraj was a very friendly and flexible host. The car was in very good shape considering it’s age. And I believe the price/benefit ratio of this car was amongst the best in SF when I did my booking. The realistic 200mi range of the car was perfectly enough for moving around the bay area, but we managed to do some longer trips as well.
Everything was excellent. I highly recommend this car (excellent gas mileage for a gas car and in excellent condition) and host (made everything easy for as a first time Turo user. Location at SFO much easier and cheaper than the car rental center.)
Skip the car rental wait lines. We went directly to the parking garage where the vehicle awaited us, and did the same for drop off. Great communication between us and the host. Huge savings. Reliable vehicle. Chris' VW bug was fun to cruise around the bay area in style.
Chris’s MINI was the perfect car to get around San Francisco. It was great when it came to finding street parking because it could fit in smaller, more compact spots. It struggled a bit on hills, but that’s probably a lot of cars in San Francisco. Chris was very easy to communicate with, and quick to reply to any questions or concerns.
Great car and the host was super helpful and would definitely recommend to anyone who looking to rent a car

Chris was very communicative throughout the entire rental process. The Fiat was easy to find, easy to unlock and access and was very clean upon pickup. Very transparent about the garage parking fee and how to get out of the garage and how to return the vehicle back at the airport when I was ready to drop off. During my rental I had to extend the time out a few hours due to a flight change at the last minute that was not in my control and he easily and quickly extended me out the time I needed. Very generous with the amount of miles included with the rental period and was very easy to work with whenever I needed to reach out. I only had a couple minor issue I feel should have been addressed prior to my rental as they were mentioned by previous Turo renters based on their comments. Primarily, the windshield wiper blades. Several noted the wiper blades were pretty worn out. I noticed some reviews back to December mentioning as much. Well, I rented in April and it was pouring rain in the NorCal redwoods the week I had the Fiat. I replaced the blades myself as they were so worn out that it was actually safer to not use them at all than it was to try and drive with them on as bad as they made a worse mess of the windshield than leaving them off. To all the future renters of the Fiat…You are welcome! Enjoy the new blades haha. I feel as a host that Reimbursement should have been offered or a discount applied as I left the new blades with the car and the old ones and the receipt from the auto parts store with them. Doesn’t change me giving a 5 star rating as the car was exactly as I needed and Chris was a very accommodating and friendly host. The car ran great and didn’t give me any issues other than the wiper blades. Given the very low daily rental price compared to other rentals in the area the fact I spent $40 more to replace the wiper blades and solved a problem for future renters in the process feels like $40 worth of good karma points and if it helps the next renter be safer on a rainy drive I am happy to have spent the money. In the grand scheme of things it’s $40 and hopefully the mantra “what goes around comes around” holds true and I will see that paid back in my travels. Despite the wipers I still would recommend Chris and the Abarth wholeheartedly and would not hesitate to rent from him again next time I am in the Bay Area….and believe me…it’s more often than I thought it would ever be in my life haha. Wishing you the best Chris! Thank you again!

Awesome car! Pick up and drop off was so easy! Great luxury car for a great price!

This car was such a fun drive! Very well maintained and perfect for every type of driver, from a first time Porsche driver to a seasoned vet. Will definitely use again

We had an amazing experience renting this Tesla! The pickup and drop-off process was incredibly easy and convenient. The host was very responsive, friendly, and communicated with us promptly throughout the trip. The car itself was spotless, well maintained, and exactly as described. It drove perfectly and had plenty of range for our trip around the Bay Area. I highly recommend adding the Full Self-Driving (FSD) option, especially if it’s your first time visiting San Francisco. It made driving through the city, highways, and unfamiliar roads much less stressful and greatly improved our overall experience. Overall, this was one of the best Turo experiences we’ve had. We would definitely rent from this host again. Highly recommended!
Such a cute car! Felt very cali driving around with the top down lol. Omar was very communicative and easy to deal with. Would rent again!
You can’t beat a car like this, amazing mpg, comfort and tech. This is like a new car, it was very well kept and maintained. From all the previous cars I’ve rented through Turo throughout the years this has to be the best one. Aside from a little bit of a shake at higher speeds it was great. The wheel shake is expected as these vehicles get used and abused with those little buddies called the curb.
Rafael is one of the best hosts on Turo, prompt response makes the pick up and extension process worked smoothly. The car condition is brand new, super clean. FSD is always up to date which makes the entire driving experience excellent. The Tesla Supercharger is also included which makes our trip even more elevates. Highly recommend Rafael!

This car rental experience was the best I have ever had and I love that I am in a way supporting locals. Joseph’s communication was quick and clear. This was the first time I have ever used Turo and moving forward it will be my go to; the end to end experience was OUTSTANDING.

San Mateo offers several scenic driving routes that showcase California's natural beauty. The Pacific Coast Highway, accessible from San Mateo, provides breathtaking ocean views and coastal landscapes. Heading east, you can explore the rolling hills and vineyards of Napa Valley. For a serene forest experience, drive through the redwoods in nearby Santa Cruz Mountains. These routes offer diverse landscapes, from rugged coastlines to lush forests, perfect for enjoying in your rental car. Remember to check local weather conditions before embarking on your journey, as fog can sometimes affect visibility along coastal routes.
Preparing for San Mateo's weather conditions is crucial for a safe and enjoyable driving experience. In summer, the area experiences mild temperatures, ideal for convertible or luxury car rentals. Winter brings occasional rain, so consider renting an SUV or vehicle with good traction. Fog can occur year-round, especially near the coast, so familiarize yourself with fog light usage. Always check the weather forecast before your trip and adjust your driving accordingly. Pack layers of clothing for temperature changes, and keep sunglasses handy for bright California sun. Being prepared for various weather scenarios ensures a comfortable journey in your San Mateo rental car.
While San Mateo itself doesn't have specific environmental zones, it's part of the Bay Area, which has implemented various eco-friendly initiatives. Be aware of California's strict emissions standards when choosing your rental car. Many parking areas in San Mateo and surrounding cities offer preferential spots for electric and hybrid vehicles, making these options worth considering. Some nearby natural areas may have vehicle restrictions to protect sensitive ecosystems, so research your planned routes. Always follow posted signs regarding idling restrictions or sensitive habitat areas. By being mindful of these environmental considerations, you can enjoy San Mateo's beautiful surroundings responsibly in your chosen rental car.
Navigating San Mateo safely requires attention to local traffic patterns and road rules. Familiarize yourself with the grid system of San Mateo's streets for easier orientation. Be cautious of pedestrians and cyclists, especially in downtown areas and near schools. When driving on highways around San Mateo, stay alert for sudden slowdowns due to traffic. Use navigation apps to avoid congestion, particularly during rush hours. Pay attention to parking regulations, as they can vary by area. If renting an SUV or larger vehicle, be mindful of narrow streets in some residential areas. Always obey speed limits and traffic signs, and remember that right turns on red are generally allowed unless otherwise posted.
San Mateo and its surrounding areas offer numerous reliable gas stations to keep your rental car fueled. Major chains and local stations are conveniently located along main thoroughfares and near highway exits. El Camino Real, a major artery running through San Mateo, features several gas stations. For those exploring beyond the city, you'll find ample fueling options along Highway 101 and Interstate 280. Many stations in the area offer both regular and premium fuel options, catering to various vehicle requirements. Some locations also provide electric charging stations, perfect if you've opted for an electric rental. Remember to refuel before embarking on longer trips to nearby attractions or scenic drives.
The ideal rental car for exploring San Mateo and the Bay Area depends on your specific plans. For city driving and easy parking, a compact or midsize car is practical and fuel-efficient. If you're planning to venture into the nearby hills or beaches, an SUV offers versatility and comfort. Luxury cars are perfect for those seeking a premium experience while cruising along scenic routes. Electric vehicles are increasingly popular in the eco-conscious Bay Area, with charging stations widely available. For larger groups or families, minivans provide ample space and comfort. Consider your itinerary, the number of passengers, and luggage requirements when selecting your San Mateo rental car to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable exploration of the area.
When planning for tolls around San Mateo, it's important to be prepared. Many Bay Area bridges, including those you might use to reach San Francisco or Oakland from San Mateo, have tolls. Most tolls are now collected electronically, so consider renting a car equipped with a toll transponder for convenience. If your rental doesn't include this, you can usually pay tolls online after your trip. Keep track of which toll roads or bridges you use. Some highways, like Interstate 680, have express lanes that require tolls during peak hours. Before your trip, research the routes you plan to take and budget accordingly for potential toll expenses. This preparation ensures a smooth journey in your San Mateo rental car without unexpected costs.
Driving in San Mateo's city streets differs significantly from nearby rural areas. In the city, expect more traffic, especially during rush hours, and be prepared for frequent stops at intersections. City driving requires vigilance for pedestrians, cyclists, and sudden lane changes. Parking can be more challenging, so consider a compact car for easier maneuvering. In contrast, rural areas around San Mateo offer more open roads and scenic views. However, these routes may have fewer streetlights and require extra caution at night. Rural drives might involve winding roads, especially in hilly areas, so an SUV could provide more stability. Always adjust your driving style to match the environment, whether navigating busy city streets or enjoying the tranquility of the countryside in your San Mateo rental car.
