Top tips for renting a car in Phoenix

A little local context goes a long way when planning a drive through the desert. These tips are designed to help you find car rentals with confidence and move through Phoenix with ease once you’re on the road.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Phoenix?

Phoenix is built for driving, with wide roads and clearly marked freeways, but timing matters. Routes around Sky Harbor Intl Airport stay busy throughout the day, especially near the Sky Train connection zones where travelers pick up vehicles and shuttle traffic flows steadily. Speed limits typically range from 25 to 45 mph on surface streets and up to 65 mph on freeways like I-10 and Loop 202.

Traffic patterns shift sharply during rush hour, particularly along central corridors feeding the downtown area. Expect heavier congestion near event venues, sports arenas, and popular entertainment districts during evenings and weekends. Heat also plays a role here, with summer temperatures pushing tires, engines, and attention spans.

Outside peak periods, driving feels simple and intuitive. Long, straight roads stretch toward desert preserves and outer neighborhoods, and navigation is simple once you learn the grid. Clear signage and consistent lane rules make it easy to settle into the flow, even if you’re new to the city.

What is parking like in Phoenix?

Parking is generally straightforward, especially compared to denser coastal cities. Public garages serve business districts and sports venues, while surface lots are common near shopping centers and museums. Many residential streets allow timed parking, and locals often note that finding a space is easier earlier in the day or later in the evening.

In busier zones, signage is clear and enforcement is predictable, which helps visitors plan ahead. City resources and local forums are useful for understanding what garages to use during major events or conventions.

Are there toll roads in Phoenix?

There are no traditional toll roads within Phoenix or the surrounding metro area. Drivers can move freely across freeways and surface streets without encountering toll plazas.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Phoenix?

Gas stations are easy to find throughout Phoenix, especially along major routes like I-10, Loop 101, and I-17. Commercial strips and neighborhood centers are well supplied, so quick refuels rarely require a detour from your route.

EV charging is also widely available, with stations in public garages, shopping districts, and newer developments across downtown, Scottsdale, and Tempe. The city’s layout and growing charging network make Phoenix a practical place to drive electric cars, even for longer day trips.

Do I need to rent a car in Phoenix?

Phoenix is a city built on distance. While pockets of the metro are walkable, the experiences that define the region live far beyond a single neighborhood. Desert hiking trails, scenic lookouts, museums, and day trips unfold miles apart, often connected by highways rather than transit lines. Renting a car on Turo gives you the freedom to move easily between urban districts and open landscapes, set your own pace, and reach places that truly show off the scale and character of the Valley.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
