Pickup near or at Airports
Driving in Chandler, AZ is scenic at every turn, and you'll encounter a wide variety of landscapes that run the gamut from long stretches of desert road to windy mountain lanes. To make sure you're always safe behind the wheel (and can enjoy your time exploring Chandler and beyond!) keep these general road rules and tips for navigating the area in mind.
In Chandler, AZ, the typical Arizona state road rules apply, including driving on the right-hand side of the road, observing road signage and speed limits, wearing a seat belt at all times, using headlights between sunset and sunrise, and giving way to pedestrians. It is illegal to use a cell phone while driving in Arizona unless it's in hands-free mode. Arizona mandates that children under eight years old or four feet, nine inches tall must be placed in a child safety seat.
During your travels in Chandler and the rest of Arizona, you'll likely encounter school buses. Throughout the state, it's mandatory to come to a complete stop when approaching a school bus that's picking up or dropping off passengers, regardless of which direction you're traveling. Another rule to be aware of focuses on left lanes on multi-lane roads; it is illegal to drive in these lanes in Arizona unless you are turning or passing another vehicle.
Speed limits in Arizona are varied, starting at 20-25 miles per hour (mph) in cities like Chandler and Phoenix, and climbing to 45-65 mph on divided and undivided roads. If you're taking the freeway, expect to be driving somewhere between 55 and 75 mph, depending on your location. On the Santan Freeway, Chandler's main freeway, the speed limit is 65 mph.
This area of Arizona is busy – and growing – so traffic can be intense at times, particularly during peak times. Many residents commute from smaller cities like Chandler, Tempe, and Mesa to Phoenix for work, so expect rush hour traffic during key commute times. The city recommends using Waze to check out the traffic before you drive, and to figure out the shortest and most convenient route to your destination.
Parking is pretty abundant in Chandler, even in the downtown area where the roads are beginning to get more built-up and tourism is growing. Throughout the city, you'll find a few completely free parking garages, as well as surface parking lots. Looking for a quick spot? Try the City Hall parking garage at 240 S Washington Street or the Oregon Street parking garage at 160 S Oregon Street. If you'd prefer a street spot, they're ample, too. In the city, most street parking spaces are metered, but as you venture further out of the downtown area, you shouldn't have an issue finding free options on the street.
No, there are no toll roads in Chandler – nor in the entire state of Arizona – so you can roam around the area freely without incurring any extra costs on your next vacay or business trip. If you plan on crossing state borders into New Mexico, you won't encounter any tolls there either, but California (Arizona's western neighbor) does have some tolls to be aware of.
You'll find no shortage of both gas stations and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Chandler, AZ. The city is committed to providing options for electric car owners, which is why they've highlighted six EV charging stations in downtown Chandler, including at the City Hall parking garage, the Oregon Street garage, the Alexander garage (100 E Boston Street), and the street parking area at Dr A.J. Chandler Park.
When it comes to fuelling up your vehicle, there are lots of gas stations throughout the Chandler city center and its outskirts. If you need to top up while you're cruising through downtown, try the Circle K at 295 S Arizona Avenue.
Chandler offers lots to see and do, so it's best explored with your very own set of wheels. While there is some public transit in the area – namely a set-route bus system that connects with the state's light rail to service major metro zones like Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix – a rental car will give you more flexibility to determine your own itinerary and enjoy the city's laid-back, unhurried vibes. If you plan on heading out to the state's noteworthy national parks like Saguaro or the Grand Canyon, a car is also your best bet. Choose something suitable for rugged terrain, like a stocky SUV or a trustworthy pickup truck.
