Wailuku, a charming town nestled in the heart of Maui, offers a perfect blend of Hawaiian culture and natural beauty. With its historic downtown, lush valleys, and proximity to stunning beaches, Wailuku serves as an ideal base for exploring the island. Booking a rental car allows you to fully immerse yourself in the area's diverse attractions, from the serene Iao Valley to the vibrant streets lined with local shops and eateries. A car rental gives you the freedom to discover hidden gems and experience the true essence of Maui at your own pace.
I will break my car rental experience (November, 2025) into 3 parts: Turo, car provider and vehicle. Turo. First time to use this app. Overall, simple and intuitive to use. It is a good option when compared to the traditional car rental companies. It was really nice not having to wait at the service rental counter. Car provider. Once you finish with the Turo process, you finalize all the details with the car owner. Daniel was exceptional to work with. He was timely and thorough with his responses to all my inquiries. Our flight arrived earlier than scheduled. I contacted Daniel and he had the car immediately available for my use. He was honest and trustworthy. At the end of the trip, I identified what I thought was a new chip in the paint. He reported it was present before the rental and not an issue. There is comfort in knowing there was no hidden agenda. Vehicle, Toyota Corolla, 2015. Don't let the age or size of the car deter you. The car was clean, dependable and satisfied all of my needs for 2 people. Hawaii may be dramatic with its natural wonders, but it is stingy with the parking spaces and roads (think road to Hana and Haleakala Volcano). We were happy to be driving this car instead of the SUVs and Jeeps that populated the parking lots and narrow, twisting roads. Overall, I would recommend Turo and HIGHLY recommend Daniel and his Toyota Corolla for your car rental needs in Maui.
We had a great trip and really enjoyed using this car during our time on Maui. The car was reliable, easy to drive, and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was definitely a big plus considering the gas prices on the island. The A/C worked perfectly, and everything in the car was in great condition. The host was fantastic and very easy to communicate with. We were able to extend our trip on short notice, and the whole process was smooth and hassle-free. The pickup instructions were clear, the car was easy to find, and everything went exactly as expected. Overall, a great experience from start to finish. We would definitely rent from this host again and highly recommend both the car and the host to future renters! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Simple car rental. Everything went great. Highly recommend for ease of rental and return. Thank you!

Easy pickup, great communication and car was perfect with high gas prices! Didn’t love having to run to the car wash before returning but honestly it was not a huge inconvenience and prepared us for going back to normal routine life haha!
Absolutely phenomenal. Unbelievably helpful and responsive, wanted to help me out when I extended our vacation, the car was as advertised. Greatest trip ever. When we come back I’m specifically looking for his cars.
Information was great. Car was great for the price. Dont need anything fancy to drive around Hawaii. Would definitely get again.
We had an amazing experience renting this car in Maui! The vehicle was clean, reliable, and exactly as described. It was perfect for exploring the island, from the Road to Hana to the beautiful beaches around Maui. The owner was friendly, responsive, and made the pickup and drop-off process incredibly easy. Communication was excellent throughout the entire rental. I would absolutely rent this car again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Maui. Mahalo for helping make our trip so enjoyable!
Great car with no problems. Great communication with the owners. The spot for the car pickup was a bit unclear; we had a bit of a hard time finding the location with the address given using Google Maps (maybe some photos or coordinates for the location would help), but due to the quick communication, we were able to find it quickly. Given the good price compared to other options in the area, would definitely recommend this and even rent it myself again.

Amazing experience! The car was clean, reliable, and perfect for our trip. Pickup and drop-off were simple and convenient, and the host was friendly, responsive, and easy to communicate with. Everything went smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend and would definitely rent again!

Sandra and Robert are the kindest, most helpful, and most professional hosts on Turo! From the moment we booked until the moment we dropped the car off, they were open with communication, clear with directions, and available for any help and even suggestions for places to go during our trip! At one point, I was confused about how to start the car, so I texted them in the Turo app. Within seconds, Robert called me on my phone and informed me (nicely, I might add) to step down a little harder on the brake before pushing the start button. Thanks again for that, Robert! That was more an issue with me not knowing how to operate a mini cooper though, not so much an issue with the car itself nor the hosts 😉 They gave clear instructions to us early for returning the car, and it was nice to feel so taken care of for our first time in Maui. Rest assured, next time we return to Maui, we’ll absolutely be renting from them again! For anyone going to Maui and in need of a car, be sure to book with Sandra and Robert! Best hosts ever! Mahalo again!!!

If you see the automatic review below saying the host cancelled the trip, I want to explain what actually happened. I made a mistake with my booking, and Jin cancelled the reservation so I could get my refund and rebook the car correctly. She absolutely didn’t have to do that. She could have kept the non-refundable payment and moved on, but instead she went out of her way to help me fix the situation, even though it resulted in the automatic cancellation message below. That kind of integrity is rare and exactly the type of person I want to do business with. The car itself was great, everything worked perfectly, and the trip went smoothly. But more importantly, Jin is spectacular and someone I recommend renting from.

It was so easy to pick up the car and drop it off at the airport unlike when you rent a car from those car rental places. It got great gas mileage. Lisa was very clear in her instructions. Would rent from her again!

Great experience with this Turo rental. It was parked right outside of the baggage claim area in the parking lot, and we only had to pay $15 for parking. The parking fee (max $24) is mentioned in all of the previous reviews and the pick up instructions, so it shouldn't be a surprise. Sure the vehicle is 13 years old and definitely shows some age with the interior and exterior, but honestly it helped us feel more at ease because it didn't stick out like "a rental" when having car windows broken into is a thing in Maui. It was super great for any small roads and tight corners, and was enough room for our family of 5 (two adults and three kids) and our beach gear. It has an USB AUX cord for charging phones and streaming music, but no modern "extras" like built in GPS / CarPlay. Biggest bonus: the MPGs! Hybrid cars are 100% the way to go on an island. We drove the car daily for a week and only had to put maybe $40 in gas, and that INCLUDED a drive to the summit of Haleakalā. It was incredible. If you're a budget-conscious traveler that wants to save $$$ on a rental cost and gas, who just needs something to go from A to B on vacation, and don't care about appearances or that new car smell, this is the car for you.

The car was great and got me where I needed to go. It was a little janky and had some damage on the front end but nothing that would affect the trip. There was an odd smell in the car the entire time and I tried to get it out but I think maybe that might be common thing around here due to the moisture. Overall I would definitely rent it again, was a real gas saver.

The best host ever! They give you all the things to do in maui and make the trip and car rental experience so easy! Will definitely rent from lucky joy next time we're on mauiA
the car was great and very pleasant to drive. the host was kind , helpful and very responsive whenever we had questions. thank you for making our experience so smooth and enjoyable. i would definitely recommend this host and would happily rent this car again !!

Choose a car that suits your planned activities, whether it's a compact car for city driving or an SUV for exploring rugged terrain. Look for extras like GPS navigation or a backup camera to enhance your driving experience. If you're planning beach trips, opt for a vehicle with ample trunk space for your gear. During peak tourist seasons, booking in advance is crucial to ensure availability. Remember to familiarize yourself with local parking regulations and consider a vehicle with good fuel efficiency for longer island explorations.
Wailuku offers several convenient pickup locations for rental cars booked on Turo. Many hosts on Turo provide flexible pickup options, including locations near Kahului Airport, which serves Maui. Guests can often find rental cars available in downtown Wailuku, making it easy to start their Hawaiian adventure. Some hosts on Turo may offer delivery to your preferred location, such as your hotel or vacation rental. While specific pickup spots vary depending on individual hosts, popular areas include the vicinity of Main Street and the Maui Mall. When booking a rental car on Turo, be sure to communicate with your host about the most suitable pickup arrangement for your needs.
Wailuku offers access to breathtaking scenic drives that highlight Maui's diverse landscapes. The road to Hana is a must-drive, winding through lush rainforests and past cascading waterfalls. For a different perspective, take the Kahekili Highway along the island's rugged northern coast, offering stunning ocean views. The upcountry route through Kula provides panoramic vistas of Maui's central valley and distant islands. These drives allow you to experience the island's natural wonders at your own pace, making a rental car essential for exploring Maui's beauty. Remember to respect local traffic rules and take breaks at designated lookout points to fully appreciate the scenery.
During busy tourist periods, navigating Wailuku's roads requires some strategy. Plan your trips outside of rush hours, typically avoiding early mornings and late afternoons when locals commute. Utilize less-traveled routes when possible, such as using Waiehu Beach Road instead of Kahului Beach Road. Consider exploring popular attractions early in the day or later in the evening to dodge the midday crowds. Stay informed about local events that might cause additional traffic. Parking can be challenging in downtown Wailuku, so look for public lots slightly away from the main streets. Having a rental car gives you the flexibility to adjust your schedule and explore less crowded areas of Maui, enhancing your overall experience.
Wailuku and its surrounding areas offer several reliable options for refueling your rental car. In Wailuku proper, you'll find gas stations along Main Street and near the intersection with High Street. For more choices, head towards Kahului, where multiple stations are located near the airport and along Dairy Road. If you're planning to explore upcountry Maui, there are fuel stops in Pukalani and Kula. When venturing to remote areas like Hana, it's wise to fill up before leaving central Maui, as stations become scarce. Always check your fuel gauge before embarking on long drives across the island, especially when heading to less populated areas. Having a full tank ensures you can enjoy Maui's scenic routes without worry.
For exploring Wailuku and Maui, a versatile vehicle is key. A mid-size SUV or a standard car with good ground clearance is often ideal, offering comfort for long drives and capability for varied terrain. If you plan to tackle the road to Hana or venture onto some of Maui's more rugged paths, consider a vehicle with all-wheel drive. For those staying mainly in Wailuku and central Maui, a compact or full-size car can suffice, providing good fuel efficiency for island exploration. Convertibles are popular for enjoying the tropical weather, but remember to bring sun protection. Ultimately, choose a rental car that matches your itinerary and comfort level, ensuring it can handle both city streets and scenic coastal drives.
In Wailuku, parking regulations are important to note. Most street parking in the downtown area is limited to two hours on weekdays, enforced from 8 AM to 6 PM. Look for signs indicating any specific restrictions or time limits. There are several public parking lots available, including the Wells Street and Vineyard Street lots, which offer longer-term parking options. When visiting popular spots like Iao Valley State Park, arrive early as parking can fill up quickly. Be mindful of residential areas and avoid blocking driveways. Some beaches have designated parking areas; always use these to respect local regulations and the environment. Having your own rental car allows for easier exploration, but remember to always park responsibly and considerately.
When driving in Wailuku, be prepared for diverse weather conditions. Maui's climate can change quickly, especially as you move between microclimates. In Wailuku, expect generally warm and dry conditions, but be ready for sudden rain showers. Ensure your rental car's wipers are in good condition for unexpected downpours. When driving to higher elevations, like Haleakala, temperatures can drop significantly, so have warm layers available. Coastal roads may experience strong winds, so maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel. During the winter months, be cautious of high surf warnings which can affect coastal roads. Always check local weather forecasts before setting out, especially for longer trips around the island. Having a rental car gives you the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and explore Maui safely in any weather.
When embarking on long-distance drives from Wailuku to explore Maui, preparation is key. Start with a full tank of fuel, as gas stations can be sparse in remote areas. Carry plenty of water and snacks, especially for routes like the road to Hana. Plan your route in advance and download offline maps, as cellular service can be unreliable in some parts of the island. Take regular breaks to avoid fatigue and enjoy the scenery at lookout points. Be prepared for changing road conditions, from winding mountain roads to narrow coastal highways. Respect local driving customs and be patient on single-lane bridges. Always have a physical map as a backup. Long-distance driving with your rental car allows you to discover Maui's hidden gems at your own pace, making your island experience truly unique.
