Nestled on Maui's north shore, Paia offers a charming blend of laid-back surf culture and vibrant local art scene. This quaint town serves as a gateway to the famous Road to Hana, with its pristine beaches and lush tropical landscapes. Booking a rental car in Paia allows you to fully immerse yourself in the island's beauty, from exploring hidden waterfalls to discovering secluded coves along the coastline. With a vehicle at your disposal, you'll have the freedom to experience Maui's diverse attractions at your own pace.
I will break my car rental experience (November, 2025) into 3 parts: Turo, car provider and vehicle. Turo. First time to use this app. Overall, simple and intuitive to use. It is a good option when compared to the traditional car rental companies. It was really nice not having to wait at the service rental counter. Car provider. Once you finish with the Turo process, you finalize all the details with the car owner. Daniel was exceptional to work with. He was timely and thorough with his responses to all my inquiries. Our flight arrived earlier than scheduled. I contacted Daniel and he had the car immediately available for my use. He was honest and trustworthy. At the end of the trip, I identified what I thought was a new chip in the paint. He reported it was present before the rental and not an issue. There is comfort in knowing there was no hidden agenda. Vehicle, Toyota Corolla, 2015. Don't let the age or size of the car deter you. The car was clean, dependable and satisfied all of my needs for 2 people. Hawaii may be dramatic with its natural wonders, but it is stingy with the parking spaces and roads (think road to Hana and Haleakala Volcano). We were happy to be driving this car instead of the SUVs and Jeeps that populated the parking lots and narrow, twisting roads. Overall, I would recommend Turo and HIGHLY recommend Daniel and his Toyota Corolla for your car rental needs in Maui.

Great value for the price. The car had cosmetic scratches and signs of wear on the exterior, but everything worked perfectly and we had no issues during our trip. It was reliable and exactly what we expected for the price. The host was friendly, responsive, and easy to communicate with. Overall, a great experience, and I would definitely recommend renting from him.
the host was great! gave good reminders for our check in and out process. we didnt need any communication/didnt have questions during the trip but he seemed like he wouldve been easy to get in contact with if needed! pick up and drop off at the airport was easy! he unlocked the car with his phone for us once we told him we landed. car was clean upon arrival. some dings on the exterior but was expected! still looked good. interior was great, AC was perfect everything worked perfectly. one minor frustration was trying to connect to the bluetooth carplay. had to set it up every time we got in the car but it wasnt anything major! maybe if we plugged it in directly it wouldve been easier but it didnt bug us that much. make sure to bring USB adapters if you plan on charging in the car, didnt see any type-C ports car was spacious and great on gas! beach equipment that we added was also very helpful :) definitely would book again
We had a great experience from start to finish! The hosts met us at the airport, which made picking up the car incredibly easy and stress-free. They took the time to explain everything about the car, including all the features and controls, so we felt comfortable driving it right away. 👌 The car itself was excellent—clean, reliable, and perfect for our trip around Maui. We also really appreciated the flexibility of returning the car at our hotel instead of the airport, which made our departure much more convenient.✅ The hosts were friendly, responsive, and extremely helpful throughout the entire rental. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend, and we would definitely rent from them again!❤️
Great rental! The car was clean, reliable, and made our Maui trip so easy. Excellent communication from the host—highly recommend!

Everything was awesome from day one! April was friendly, professional and very responsive during our whole trip. The car was beautiful and ran great! We would definitely rent from April again!😊👍🏻👏🏻
We had a great trip and really enjoyed using this car during our time on Maui. The car was reliable, easy to drive, and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was definitely a big plus considering the gas prices on the island. The A/C worked perfectly, and everything in the car was in great condition. The host was fantastic and very easy to communicate with. We were able to extend our trip on short notice, and the whole process was smooth and hassle-free. The pickup instructions were clear, the car was easy to find, and everything went exactly as expected. Overall, a great experience from start to finish. We would definitely rent from this host again and highly recommend both the car and the host to future renters! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you see the automatic review below saying the host cancelled the trip, I want to explain what actually happened. I made a mistake with my booking, and Jin cancelled the reservation so I could get my refund and rebook the car correctly. She absolutely didn’t have to do that. She could have kept the non-refundable payment and moved on, but instead she went out of her way to help me fix the situation, even though it resulted in the automatic cancellation message below. That kind of integrity is rare and exactly the type of person I want to do business with. The car itself was great, everything worked perfectly, and the trip went smoothly. But more importantly, Jin is spectacular and someone I recommend renting from.

It was so easy to pick up the car and drop it off at the airport unlike when you rent a car from those car rental places. It got great gas mileage. Lisa was very clear in her instructions. Would rent from her again!

Awesome car, clean, drives perfectly, great gas mileage! Best host to rent from, easy to contact!

The best host ever! They give you all the things to do in maui and make the trip and car rental experience so easy! Will definitely rent from lucky joy next time we're on mauiA

As the other reviews state, this car isn’t in pristine condition, but honestly it was fine. It’s a little beat up, other reviews outline the “issues” but honestly it’s not your car, so who cares. You’re on vacation and you want a convertible that’s kinda fun to drive. We logged over 400 miles in 5 days. Had a lot of fun and drove the Road to Hana in it. There isn’t much room in the backseat. My two late teen kids were a little squished but they were fine, so be aware of that. The four of us aren’t bigger people so it worked for us. We had two suitcases- only one fit in the trunk so the other had to go in the between them and the two front seats.

Had an amazing time on our honeymoon to Maui! The car was very easy to drive around the island and gave us no issues. Lucky Joy was so responsive and flexible during our trip, even when we wanted to extend a little longer just to take advantage of our time here. Thank you so much!!
The car was great! Pickup was easy, and the host was excellent with communication. Would definitely rent again!

For a scenic drive, take the Haleakala Highway to the summit of Haleakala National Park, offering panoramic views of Maui. The Kahekili Highway provides a thrilling coastal route with ocean vistas. When renting a car in Paia, it's essential to be prepared for the tropical climate and sudden weather shifts. Choose a vehicle with good air conditioning for comfort during hot days. Consider renting an SUV or a car with higher clearance to handle potential rain-slicked roads. Pack sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense Hawaiian sun while driving. It's wise to keep a light jacket or sweater in the car for cooler evenings or higher elevations. Stay informed about local weather forecasts and be prepared for brief rain showers, which can occur even on sunny days. Ensure your rental car has good windshield wipers and remember to turn on headlights during rain for better visibility.

For exploring Paia and the diverse Hawaiian landscapes, versatile vehicles are ideal. A compact SUV or standard SUV offers the perfect balance of comfort and capability, handling both town streets and rural roads with ease. These vehicles provide enough ground clearance for uneven terrain and space for beach gear or hiking equipment. If you're planning on tackling more challenging routes, like parts of the Road to Hana, a full-size SUV might be preferable for its robust performance. For couples or solo travelers, a compact car can be sufficient for most Paia adventures, offering good fuel efficiency for longer drives. Consider renting a convertible for a truly memorable experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Hawaii's beautiful scenery and tropical breezes.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife and pedestrians, especially on less-traveled routes. It's advisable to rent a car with good handling, such as a compact SUV or standard SUV, for these types of roads. Before setting out, ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas, as fuel stations can be sparse in rural areas. Pack water and snacks for your journey, and don't rely solely on GPS - having a physical map as backup can be helpful. Enjoy the scenic beauty, but always prioritize safe driving practices.
Planning a road trip from Paia to explore Maui can be an exhilarating experience. Start by choosing a suitable rental car, like a compact SUV or standard SUV, that provides comfort for long drives and versatility for various terrains. Map out your route in advance, considering stops at iconic locations such as the Haleakala National Park or the charming town of Lahaina. Include time for spontaneous detours to hidden beaches or local fruit stands. Pack essentials like sunscreen, water, and snacks. Consider the diverse microclimates of Maui and bring layers for temperature changes. Don't forget your camera to capture the stunning scenery. Plan your fuel stops, as some areas may have limited options. Remember to take breaks to fully appreciate the island's beauty and always drive safely on Maui's scenic roads.

In Paia town, you'll find a gas station conveniently located on Hana Highway, perfect for topping up before heading out on scenic drives. For those venturing towards Kahului, there are multiple gas stations along Hana Highway and Dairy Road, including some near the airport. If you're planning a trip to Haleakala or Upcountry Maui, consider fueling up in Pukalani or Makawao, where you'll find reliable stations. When renting a car, whether it's a compact SUV or standard SUV, it's wise to keep your tank at least half full, especially when exploring more remote areas of the island. Always check your fuel levels before embarking on longer journeys, such as the Road to Hana, where gas stations are less frequent.
When embarking on long-distance driving adventures from Paia across Maui, packing the right essentials can enhance your experience. Start with a reliable map or download offline maps to your smartphone, as cell service can be spotty in remote areas. Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized. Pack a first-aid kit for any minor emergencies. Sun protection is crucial, so include sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. A light jacket or sweater is useful for higher elevations or cooler evenings. Don't forget your camera to capture Maui's stunning landscapes. If you've rented a standard SUV or compact SUV, utilize the extra space for beach towels, hiking shoes, and a cooler for drinks and perishables. Lastly, bring a reusable shopping bag for any local purchases you make along your journey.
