I had an excellent experience renting this 2016 Toyota Corolla. The car was very dependable, clean, fuel-efficient, and ran smoothly throughout my trip with no issues at all. The owner was respectful, professional, and easy to communicate with from start to finish. Pickup and drop-off were simple and convenient. I would definitely rent this vehicle again and highly recommend both the car and the owner to anyone looking for a reliable rental experience.

Pick up was fairly straightfoward. Car drove smoothly, good turning, radio worked well. It was only 3 of us and the car was perfect for what we needed. I couldn't connect my android auto to the car, but I guess it doesn't have that feature. AC worked well. Great price. Thank you.

Picking up at ORF

Purple squiggle

Pickup & return areas at ORF

Once you land, skip the rental car kerfuffle and head straight to the airport's public parking areas — most cars will be found in the Hourly Parking areas (North or South Lots, or Garage A/Level 1). Some may also be in the Daily Parking areas (East Lot or Garages A/Level 3–8, and Garages B, C, or D). Your host will share the exact location ahead of time so you can head straight there, grab the keys (or use remote unlock), and get going. Just don't forget to hang onto the ticket in the vehicle for a smooth exit.

Communicate with your host

Once your trip is confirmed, everything you need is in the Turo app. Your host will send through parking details, lockbox codes (if any), and whatever instructions are needed right to your messages. Two hours before your trip begins, real-time location sharing kicks in, which is great for syncing up if your flight happens to be running late, or if there are any changes in plans last minute.

Parking & airport fees

There are some things to be aware of before booking your car rental. Norfolk Airport charges a fee for any car rented on airport property, but don't worry, Turo collects and remits this fee automatically with zero markup. If your host requires you to cover the cost of parking, that cost will be clearly displayed in the trip listing so you always know what to expect before you book.

Why rent a car at the airport on Turo?

" "

Contactless check-in and checkout

Many hosts offer contactless check-in and checkout, if their car has remote access technology, allowing you to find the car, unlock it, and be on your way without meeting them in person. Message your host for specific instructions.

" "

Convenient airport car rental pickup and return

Rather than hustling at the busy terminal curbside, take your time picking up the rental car at approved parking lots or garages. Check in, load up your luggage, and get comfortable with the car without a big rush.

" "

Relax with support & damage protection

24/7 support and roadside assistance mean help is just a call away, plus you can choose from a range of protection plans.

Norfolk, Virginia

Nauticus Museum/Battleship Wisconsin

If you're only stopping by one museum, make it this one. Nauticus blends hands-on maritime exhibits with access to the USS Wisconsin, a massive Iowa-class battleship that saw action in World War II, Korea, and the Gulf War. Explore hurricane simulators, step aboard its massive deck, peek into crew quarters, wander below deck through mess halls and crew quarters frozen in time, and step back into history. Afterwards, stroll over to the Waterside District next door for a well-earned drink and harbour views that stretch out past the ship’s bow.

Chrysler Museum of Art

Tucked into Norfolk's historic Ghent district, the Chrysler Museum is a surprising standout — and completely free to enter. Inside, you'll find over 50,000 works spanning centuries, from European masters and Mesoamerican sculptures to contemporary pieces and an awe-inspiring Tiffany glass collection that glows like stained glass windows at sunset. The space itself is bright, modern, and refreshingly easy to navigate, making it perfect for a relaxed afternoon. Be sure to pop into the adjacent Glass Studio, where daily demos turn molten glass into mesmerising art right before your eyes.

First Landing State Park

Need a break from the bustle? This 2,888-acre waterfront park located just outside Norfolk is more than just a nature retreat — it's where the first English settlers landed in 1607. These days, it's a haven for kayakers and anyone needing a dose of fresh air and some coastal calm. Follow trails lined with bald cypress trees and Spanish moss, rent a paddleboard on Broad Bay, or find your own slice of shoreline along the Chesapeake and listen to the waves. On the way back, swing by the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for funnel cakes, kitschy souvenir shops, and buskers by the boardwalk.

Top tips for renting a car in Norfolk

In a city where the shorelines are wide and the seafood’s worth the detour, a rental car isn’t just a convenience — it’s your ticket to exploring. From beach day pit stops to sunset drives through the Tidewater region, here’s what to know before you hit the road.

How does airport pickup work at Norfolk International Airport?

Picking up your car rental at Norfolk Intl Airport is a piece of cake. Once you’ve landed and grabbed your personal belongings from the baggage claim area, follow the signs for the airport’s Hourly lots (North Lot, South Lot, and Garage A/Level 1) or Daily parking areas (East Lot, Garage A/Levels 3-8, and Garages B, C, and D). Your host will share the exact stall number and how to unlock the car — either remotely via the Turo app or with a quick in-person handoff. No shuttle loops or rental desk queues here. Just find your ride and roll.

How does drop-off work at Norfolk International Airport?

Returning your rental vehicle is just as easy. Head to the same airport location (or any other agreed-upon spot), grab a fresh ticket at the entrance, park at the rental car return area, and upload your return photos. Place the keys in the lockbox (or hand them off, depending on your host), then send over the stall details in the app. Done and dusted.

How far is Norfolk International Airport from Downtown Norfolk?

There's only about 10 miles between you and the downtown area at Norfolk Airport — about a breezy 15 minutes, depending on traffic, of course. Even if there's a some traffic, with an ORF car rental on Turo, you'll be rolling past Waterside and into brunch before you know it.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Norfolk?

Driving in Norfolk is generally relaxed, but it helps to know what you’re working with. Speed limits hover around 25–30 miles per hour (mph) in residential areas, while major highways tend to run at 45–55 mph. Virginia has a strict hands-free law, so make sure your phone is mounted if you’re using it for navigation, and always flip your headlights on when it’s raining, even if it's just a quick summer sprinkle.

Weather-wise, Norfolk likes to keep drivers on their toes. During summer months, thunderstorms can show up without much warning and flood parts of low-lying roads, especially near the Lafayette River or around the tunnels. In winter, snow is rare but not unheard of, and when it does happen, bridges and elevated roadways can get icy well before everything else. Keep your distance, and don’t assume that any puddle is just a regular puddle.

And while it’s not exactly the countryside, Norfolk still has its share of wildlife to watch out for. Deer tend to roam near wooded spots around Lake Smith, Little Creek, and other parts of Virginia Beach, particularly at dawn and dusk. You might also spot the occasional turtle crossing in First Landing State Park or around the backroads near the naval bases. In short? Keep your eyes up, your headlights on, and your pace steady — Norfolk will reward you with some seriously scenic drives.

What is parking like in Norfolk?

Norfolk’s parking scene is friendlier than most cities its size. Downtown, you’ll find plenty of spots lining Granby Street, Boush Street, and Main Street. If you’re looking for all-day coverage, garages like MacArthur Center, Bank Street, and Fountain Park put you within a few blocks of most museums, coffee shops, and waterfront strolls. Planning a beach day? Ocean View Parking fills up quickly, but the lots near Community Beach Park offer better luck (and less circling).

Are there toll roads in Norfolk?

There are toll roads in Norfolk, but the good news is that if you're sticking to the Norfolk side, you’re in the clear. However, if you’re crossing into Portsmouth, expect to hit the electronic tolls at the Midtown and Downtown Tunnels (Elizabeth River Tunnels). They’re unavoidable for some trips, so double-check whether your rental covers toll payments.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Norfolk?

Running low on fuel? Head to Military Highway — it’s packed with stations and it’s conveniently close to the airport if you’re topping off before returning your car. Around downtown, Brambleton Avenue and Tidewater Drive have reliable options, too.

If you’re behind the wheel of an EV, you’re in good shape. You’ll find chargers along Main Street, Granby Street, and in the MacArthur Center Garage.

Do I need to rent a car in Norfolk?

If you want to do more than circle downtown, absolutely. The Tide light rail only goes so far, and most of Norfolk's best bits are scattered across the coast, the suburbs, and the scenic backroads beyond it. With a car, you can go from brunch in Ghent to kayaking in First Landing, with a detour for seafood in Ocean View and a sunset stop at Cape Henry. All this, without any transfers, timetables, or waiting around required.
