Sprinter Van was wonderful. Car delivery convenience was made even better when they found a closer location than I had asked for. Made for a great family trip.

Daniel was extremely pleasant and accommodating. The van was in excellent condition. It was spacious, clean and it had heat, AC, radio and automatic back door. I have nothing negative to say and I will absolutely rent again and recommend him. Thanks for sharing your van with my huge family, everyone was extremely comfortable.

Ford Transit 2023

Van was in great condition. No issues with the drive. Smooth and stable for a 15 seater. Minor issue: rear door open warning light was always on, he told me to ignore it. More annoying issue: this host wants to be in person for pick up and drop off, which was annoying because they showed up 10 mins late for pickup and because I felt rushed bringing the car back to them for our agreed upon time. I’m only giving 5 stars for this review since they are clearly trying / had a broken leg / waited 40 minutes for me in the target at the end. Unfortunately, all of their effort is still worse than the average rental car company experience of a key drop off box and a car ready for you when you get there, which I’ve grown to also expect from Turo.

Ford Transit 2018

I thoroughly enjoyed my rental. Car drove extremely well and I felt safe transporting my family across several states in it. Car owner was accessible and explained how to use several features in the van. Owner answered all of my questions at the very beginning of the trip, which I appreciated. This rental was very much different than other rentals I’ve done in the past. Will definitely rent this van again.

Top tips for renting a van in New York City

As great as New York City is, driving here is challenging. Potholes, heavy traffic, constant honking, and numerous pedestrians are just a few things you have to navigate. Whether you're visiting for a day or you're here for longer, preparation is crucial to make the most of your trip.

If you're not used to driving a larger vehicle, it's a good idea to practice before arriving in NYC. There's very little room for error, especially while making tight turns. Pay attention to all parking signs to avoid getting a ticket or having the van towed.

What is parking a van like in New York City?

Parking in many areas of NYC requires serious patience. Once you find a legal spot, take your time pulling in. Chances are it'll be a tight fit. Make sure to also know the dimensions of the van in case you decide to enter a parking garage instead of doing street parking.

How to choose the right type of van for your New York City trip

Choosing the right type of van largely depends on your needs while visiting New York City. For example, if you're touring with some friends, a passenger van is a great option. If you're here for a gig and toting band equipment, a cargo van is ideal, especially compared to hauling everything on the subway.

Loading a cargo van

One of the most important tips for loading or unloading a van in NYC is to first check that you're not in a "No Standing" zone. While you can drop off or pick up passengers, you can't do anything else without risking a ticket.

Are there toll roads in New York City?

New York City has bridge and tunnel tolls. Visit the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) "Bridges and Tunnels tolls" page for more information about current rates.

Gas stations and EV chargers in New York City

There are plenty of gas stations and EV chargers throughout the metropolitan area, but there aren't many of either in Manhattan. Use specialized apps during your visit to help pinpoint where both are in relation to your current location.

Do I need to rent a van in New York City?

Booking a rental van in New York City can be a good idea if you want to avoid public transportation, ride shares, and taxis. It's also beneficial if you need to transport items or want to visit major cities that are a short drive away. You have the freedom and flexibility to do things on your time and schedule.

On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
