Run wild in Rochester

Located on the shores of a great lake, Rochester is also close to the Finger Lakes and several waterfalls. In town, you’ll find colonial-style houses and historically significant buildings, plus fine dining and fun attractions.

Catch a ball game at Frontier Field, hit up one of the city’s renowned museums, ride the oldest roller coaster in America, or simply stroll through beautiful Highland Park and spend a few minutes meditating in Mount Hope Cemetery. Rochester has everything.

Rochester favorites

History and play intersect by the lake in Rochester.

Seabreeze Amusement Park

This summer amusement park is a fun blast from the past. The Jack Rabbit, its most famous ride, is the oldest continually operating roller coaster in the country. 100 years later, it’s still giving thrill-seekers a great time.

Susan B. Anthony House

Famous suffragette and women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony lived in Rochester for 40 years. At her home on Madison Street, now a museum, you can learn more about her life and work. See the front parlor where she was arrested in 1872, and don’t miss the visitor center next door.

The Strong National Museum of Play

Take the option to indulge your inner child. Dedicated to “the history and exploration of play,” the Strong is an interactive museum that’s home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and the largest collection of historical toys and games in the world.

Hit the road

If you have time for a road trip outside of Rochester, there’s plenty to explore. Niagara Falls is a gorgeous region full of wineries, outdoor trails, and, of course, a famous waterfall. The history-rich area around Rochester also boasts museums and important sites ready for you to explore — from nearby Buffalo to Ithaca or Seneca Falls.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is about an hour and a half away. With options for hiking, boating, dining, and wining, you can easily spend a full day in the area. But at minimum, you should stop for a sight of the three thundering falls that separate New York from Canada, collectively known as Niagara Falls.

Chimney Bluffs

Another natural wonder not far from Rochester is Chimney Bluffs, a rugged state park with towering clay cliffs. Four miles worth of hiking trails provide stunning glimpses of the cliffs and beautiful views of Lake Ontario.

Seneca Falls

A visit to the Susan B. Anthony House wouldn’t be complete without a follow-up trip to nearby Seneca Falls: where the women’s rights movement began in 1848. Visit the national historical park, which includes four properties and a visitor’s center, then stop by the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

Best Rochester driving roads

The Lake Ontario Seaway Trail

This 518-mile trail runs along Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River. You won’t want to drive the whole thing, but take the Western or Eastern parts of the trail through Rochester and you’ll have your choice of views of lakes, rivers, charming towns, and historic sites.

Newell Road

Located amid the Finger Lakes in Yates County, Newell Road is a winding drive with beautiful scenery. Passing through Middlesex, you’ll encounter “spook hill,” where you can put your car in neutral and roll uphill. Locals blame it on the spirits who reside in the nearby burial ground.

Lake Avenue

Lake Avenue takes you from the heart of Rochester up to Ontario Beach Park, where you can revel in the beauty of Lake Ontario. From there, continue on Lake Ontario State Parkway for more rewarding lakeside views.
