A luxury SUV makes it easy to pack hiking boots, beach towels, or snow gear, depending on the season. Come for the natural beauty, stay for a full-day escape into stillness and fresh air.

From snowy campus mornings to late-summer lake drives, Syracuse is a city best navigated with a car. Syracuse Airport car rental options on Turo make it easy to pick up nearby and explore beyond the terminal. Before hitting the road, here’s what to know about pickup logistics, driving around Central New York, and the key details to review in your rental agreement before you go.
After arriving at the airport, make your way toward the designated pickup areas outside the airport grounds. Most hosts will direct you to off-site parking lots along Col. Eileen Collins Blvd. Once your trip is booked, the Turo app will show the exact location of your vehicle.
Dropping off your vehicle is simple. Check the Turo app to confirm the drop-off location for your rental car. If you need to confirm any details, use the Turo app to communicate with your host. Once your car has been returned, make your way back to the airport, ready to catch your departing flight.
The airport is located just six miles from downtown, making it a short 15-minute drive under normal traffic. Driving around Syracuse Hancock International Airport and the city is mostly straightforward, with key routes like I-81 and I-690 connecting you to major spots. Expect traffic around downtown and university areas from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Snow is a major factor between November and March, especially on Route 481 and suburban roads. A midsize vehicle with all-wheel drive is recommended during winter. In New York, a hands-free device is required when using your phone.
Speed limits are 30 mph in the city and up to 65 mph on highways. Be aware of summer construction and possible delays that could lead to related expenses if not accounted for.
Parking downtown is fairly straightforward. Garages like the Atrium and Washington Street Garage offer convenient access to Armory Square and entertainment venues, with EV charging available for electric sedan drivers. Metered street parking is common near restaurants and shops.
If you're considering compact or performance models from the following car classes, keep in mind they’re easier to maneuver and park in tighter downtown spaces.
Yes. Syracuse sits on the New York State Thruway (I-90), a toll road that runs east–west across the state and connects cities like Buffalo, Albany, and Rochester.
