The owner of this car did not renew his insurance, and not by a little bit - he had not renewed his insurance for a YEAR AND A HALF, since the spring of 2024!! I was pulled over, when driving at midnight, due to no fault of my own, by New York State Police, who were able to scan the license plate of the vehicle and see that the insurance had lapsed.
Moreover, when I first picked up the vehicle, before I ever drove it off of the lot, I asked the owner where the registration and insurance were. He told me they were both in the glove compartment, and I checked for them both there before driving the vehcile.
However, when they pulled me over, and I went to the glove compartment to pull out the registration, it turns out that the owner had not only not renewed the insurance for a year and a half, but he had put the registration for the WRONG vehicle in the glove compartment. Specifically, the registration was not associated with the license plate of this vehicle. This was really bad, as I looked even more suspicious to the New York State Police who pulled me over. Fortunately, underneath the incorrect documents was the correct registration for the vehicle, but it looked really, really bad to have incorrect documents at the top of the pile, before finding the correct documents at the bottom of the pile of papers in the glove compartment.
Not all police officers would have been so patient, to wait and see if I could find the current ones.
Furthermore, they were supposed to have taken the car and impounded it, but based on my explanation checking out, they allowed me to drive it home, with the instructions that I was to immediately get insurance or get the car returned.
The worst was, after I had been up until 3:30 in the morning with customer service to figure out how the car would get towed and how to get a replacement vehicle, the owner FINALLY messages back (after not picking up calls all night when Turo customer service called him), and he asks me, what did *I* do to get pulled over? I did nothing. They have technology to scan the license plates. He had clearly gone a year and a HALF and was not going to renew the insurance unless he got caught. This is both incredibly illegal, but incredibly unethical. What if I had been in an accident?
On top of that, instead of admitting his error, and taking responsibility, he says, "well, they should be able to look it up based on the insurance policy number, even if the document is not the right one." Uh, they did, dude. And your insurance had lapsed. Otherwise, they would not have pulled me over. They pulled me over because they already have it in their computer system what company your insurance is through, and how long it's been since it has been renewed. The owner is the one who did something illegal, and he's trying to put the blame on me, first, and then on the NY State police, next.
Finally, it did not end there! He also said that even if it HAD lapsed, that I should be fine because it's not my fault, but his fault. No. Wrong. People get pulled over all the time and either because they are nervous or don't answer questions correctly, they can get detained or have bodily harm. It is incredibly terrifying to be pulled over, as a single women driving alone, on the highway after midnight, having done nothing wrong, but have to answer questions about my job, why I'm driving at night, where I'm coming from, why did I rent a car in Syracuse for use in Ithaca, why did I live here but work elsewhere, etc. etc. Fortunately, these PARTICULAR police were reasonable, and fortunately, I tried not to get too nervous and my story checked out. But people all around the country, every day, have bad things happen to them, even when they've done nothing wrong. It put my well-being at risk for the owner to be WILLING to risk my situation and personal safety to wait and see if the customer gets pulled over before renewing insurance.
He did have some story about how he has 12 rental cars, so I guess the credit card had expired or the automatic payment did not go through. I don't care if he has 12 cars or 1. He clearly is not doing a good job managing the number of cars that he has to ensure the safety and well-being of his customers, and really, just to ensure that the minimum legal conditions are met. What he did was super illegal, and then he tried to justify it over and over. Terrible. I lost critical amounts of time when I was moving and selling a house and interviewing for jobs. Took several days to get my sleep back to normal.
The vehicle was fully insured; the confusion came from older documents in the glovebox. I cannot verify the incident described, as the guest called and messaged at 3 a.m. Communication was very very very challenging, with daily pressure and requests for a free day and even a free snow brush. It just made your day bad. We appreciate the car being returned clean, but the review does not reflect the actual situation.
