Navigating peak hour traffic in Somerville and Boston requires some strategic planning. Consider using real-time traffic apps to avoid congested areas and find alternative routes. If possible, plan your trips outside of rush hours, typically 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM on weekdays. Somerville's extensive network of bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly streets can sometimes offer quicker alternatives for short trips. When driving, be prepared for sudden lane changes and always watch for cyclists and pedestrians. Renting a compact car can be advantageous for maneuvering through tight city streets and finding parking spots more easily. Remember, patience is key when dealing with Boston area traffic, so allow extra time for your journeys.
Somerville and its surrounding areas offer numerous reliable options for refueling your rental car. You'll find several gas stations along major thoroughfares such as McGrath Highway and Broadway. The Davis Square area also has convenient options. For potentially lower prices, consider the stations near Assembly Row. When venturing outside Somerville, gas stations are plentiful along Route 93 and near the Alewife MBTA station. It's wise to familiarize yourself with your rental car's fuel type and tank location before setting out. Many stations in the area are self-service, so be prepared to pump your own gas. Keep an eye on your fuel gauge and try to refill when you're at a quarter tank to avoid any last-minute rushes in unfamiliar areas.
Parking in Somerville requires attention to local regulations. Many residential streets have permit parking, so be sure to check signs carefully. Metered parking is available in commercial areas, with some spots offering mobile payment options. Be aware of street cleaning schedules, which vary by neighborhood, to avoid tickets. Several public parking lots are available, particularly near popular areas like Davis Square and Union Square. When using your rental car, consider parking strategies like "Park and Walk" for busy areas. Some parts of Somerville have time-limited parking, so note the duration allowed. In winter, pay attention to snow emergency regulations, which may affect where you can park. Planning your parking in advance can save time and stress during your Somerville visit.
For exploring Somerville and nearby Massachusetts attractions, versatile car types are ideal. A compact or mid-size car offers good maneuverability for city driving and parking, while still providing comfort for longer trips. If you're planning to venture into more rural areas or during winter, an SUV might be a better choice for its handling capabilities. For families or groups, a minivan can provide ample space and comfort. Luxury car options are available for those seeking a more upscale experience. Electric vehicles are gaining popularity in the area, with charging stations becoming more common. Consider your itinerary and the season when choosing your rental car in Somerville, ensuring it meets your needs for both city exploration and potential day trips to surrounding attractions.
Preparing for Somerville's varied weather conditions is crucial for safe driving. In winter, ensure your rental car is equipped with all-season or winter tires. Familiarize yourself with the vehicle's defrosting and heating systems. During snowy conditions, clear all windows and lights before driving. Summer can bring heavy rainstorms, so check that your windshield wipers are functioning properly. In fall, be cautious of wet leaves on the road which can be slippery. Spring often sees fluctuating temperatures, so be prepared for both warm and cool conditions. Year-round, it's wise to keep an eye on weather forecasts and adjust your driving plans accordingly. Choosing a rental car with good visibility and reliable handling can make navigating Somerville's weather much easier.
Driving in Somerville's urban areas requires heightened awareness due to dense traffic, frequent pedestrian crossings, and numerous cyclists. You'll encounter more one-way streets, traffic signals, and parallel parking situations. In contrast, nearby rural roads offer a more relaxed driving experience with scenic views but come with their own challenges. Rural areas may have fewer street lights, more wildlife crossings, and occasionally unpaved roads. Speed limits typically increase outside the city, but curves can be sharper and less predictable. When renting a car in Somerville, consider how much urban versus rural driving you'll be doing. A nimble car might be preferable for city navigation, while something with better ground clearance could be advantageous for rural excursions.
When driving around Somerville and greater Boston, be prepared for several toll roads. The most notable is the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), which uses an electronic tolling system. The Tobin Bridge, connecting Chelsea to Boston, also has tolls. Many routes to Logan Airport involve tolls, including the Sumner and Ted Williams tunnels. It's advisable to discuss toll options with your car rental provider in Somerville, as some offer toll transponders for convenience. If your rental car doesn't have a transponder, tolls will be billed via license plate recognition. Keep in mind that some GPS systems can be set to avoid toll roads if you prefer. Being aware of these tolls can help you budget and plan your routes more effectively during your stay in Somerville.
