Instead, you’ll collect your car from a handy off-airport location, whether that’s your hotel or a nearby lot by a local attraction. Just bring your driver’s license, and you’re good to go.

How does drop-off work near Portland International Jetport?

For renters catching a flight home from Portland International Jetport, the rental vehicle drop-off is conveniently located where you decide at booking. Just return your vehicle to the agreed-upon spot, and head back to the airport. With Turo, it's easy to avoid crowded terminal areas and the long line at the rental counter inside.

How far is Portland International Jetport from Downtown Portland?

Portland International Jetport is just a quick 10-15 minute drive from downtown Portland and nearby South Portland. Renters traveling from the airport can easily rent a car to explore the city’s vibrant neighborhoods, waterfront, and beyond with convenience and flexibility.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Portland?

Portland follows Maine’s standard road rules, including seat belt requirements, ban on phone use while driving, and speed limits — typically 15 mph in school zones, 25 mph in residential or business areas, and 45 mph on main roads unless posted otherwise.

Winter conditions can be tough — while typically harsher in Northern Maine, Portland still experiences intense snow, ice, and low visibility. If you're visiting in colder months, be cautious when booking rental cars — choose vehicles that handle well in winter.

Getting around Portland by car is relatively easy. The I-295 brings you into downtown, while U.S. Route 1 connects to many neighborhoods. Forest Avenue and Congress Street are key east–west roads. Just watch for traffic during rush hour or major events — spots like Congress & High or Forest & Marginal can get especially busy. If you're driving a rental car, give yourself a little extra time at these busy intersections — especially if you're not familiar with the area.

What is parking like in Portland?

Whether you’re just popping in for a few hours or planning to park all day, Portland has plenty of public and private parking options that make finding a spot easy.

If you’re hoping to save money, SmartPark garages are Portland’s most affordable and centrally located parking option. You'll find them downtown on Elm Street, Spring Street, and Temple Street, all offering real-time availability and 24/7 access — perfect if you’re coming in for some Old Port exploring, shopping, or work. Another great spot is the Cumberland County Garage near City Hall and the Casco Bay Ferry Terminal, which puts you just steps away from the waterfront and Old Port area.

Besides garages, there are lots of metered street parking spots and private lots scattered over the city— usually just a short walk from your favorite restaurants, shops, and attractions. So if you're thinking of using Turo, there’s plenty of space for rental cars to park across most neighborhoods.

Are there toll roads in Portland?

Yes, the key toll road serving the Portland area is the Maine Turnpike (I-95) — a 109-mile highway that runs from Kittery to Augusta, passing through Portland and nearby towns like Scarborough and Biddeford. Toll fees are collected at several points, most notably at the Falmouth Spur just north of Portland — connecting I-95 to I-295 and U.S. Route 1. If you're renting a vehicle through Turo near Portland International Jetport, planning your route can help you avoid delays and toll surprises.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Portland?

Portland makes it easy to find both gas stations and EV chargers around town. There are plenty of gas stations conveniently spread throughout the city, like 2282 Congress St and 270 Riverside St, which are open 24 hours.

If you drive an electric vehicle, you’ll find several public charging options. Most are Level 2 chargers, with some Level 3 fast chargers too. You can charge up at Portland City Hall, Spring St & High St Parking Garage, and the Elm Street Parking Garage. There are also options at Chestnut Street, the Temple Street Parking Garage, and the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Waterfront (which has Tesla Destination Charging).

Do I need to rent a car in Portland?

To get the most out of your visit to Portland, renting a car is the way to go. Whether you’re exploring scenic Fort Williams Park or the picturesque Old Port, having your own vehicle lets you discover at your own pace. With rental cars available in various vehicle classes, finding the perfect fit is easy.
