Pickup & return areas at Detroit Metro Airport

At Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Turo makes car rental convenient and straightforward. Pickups and returns are allowed at any public parking lot across the airport property. Once your rental period begins, head to the designated parking spot as indicated in the Turo app. Use the ticket left in your vehicle to exit smoothly, saving time while navigating the busy Detroit metro airport. Returning? Park in any available spot and message your host with the location details.

Communicate with your host

Good communication is key to a seamless car rental experience at Detroit Airport. Coordinate with your host ahead of time to confirm the exact parking lot location, whether it’s near the ground transportation centers or shuttle bus stops. Need directions? Follow the airport signs to the rental car desks or public parking. Share updates through Turo’s messaging platform, and don’t forget to ask about any final instructions regarding personal belongings, rental car return, or drop-off specifics.

Parking & airport fees

Detroit Metropolitan Airport requires Turo to collect a fee for car rentals delivered on airport property. Parking fees may also apply if your host uses public lots like the McNamara Terminal Parking Garage or The Big Blue Deck. These fees, disclosed in the vehicle listing, cover services like free shuttle service to car lots or extended luxury SUV deliveries. While Turo doesn’t set or retain these charges, your host will ensure everything is accounted for, making your DTW car rental stress-free. Keep an eye on airport signs for clear directions to parking ramps and return areas.

Top tips for renting a car in Detroit

Detroit: where muscle cars are practically part of the local DNA and a rental car is your key to unlocking every corner of this dynamic city. Whether you’re headed to the Motor City for a quick trip or planning a long-term stay, these tips will make your car rental Detroit airport experience as smooth as a freshly waxed hood.

How does airport pickup work at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport?

Pickup at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is a breeze with Turo. Simply coordinate with your host to find your rental vehicle parked at one of the public parking lots. Whether it’s the McNamara Terminal Parking Garage or another location, you’ll grab the parking ticket your host left in the car, exit the lot, and hit the road.

Unlike traditional car rental companies, with Turo, you're hiring straight from a local host who knows the most convenient pick-up spots based on your arrival terminal. Say goodbye to rental car desks inside the airport and hello to a seamless start to your Detroit adventure.

How does drop-off work at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport?

For drop-offs, you’ll park the rental car in any available spot at the public parking lots, such as those near the McNamara Terminal or other designated locations. Pull a ticket at the entrance, leave it in the vehicle for your host, and message them through Turo to confirm the exact location. No hassle, no shuttle bus to the car lot — just an easy process that saves you time.

How far is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport from Downtown Detroit?

Downtown Detroit is just 20 miles from DTW, or about a 25-minute drive if traffic plays nice. Taking Lucas Drive and connecting to the I-94 will get you there faster than a premium luxury SUV on cruise control.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Detroit?

Driving in Detroit means sharing the road with vehicles of all shapes and sizes — from compact sedans to extended luxury SUVs. Keep these basics in mind:

- Drive on the right-hand side of the road.

- Speed limits vary but typically hover around 55–70 mph on highways.

- Michigan’s BAC limit is 0.08%, so keep that in mind before grabbing a drink at a local brewery.

- Watch for potholes, especially during winter, as Michigan’s freeze-thaw cycles can wreak havoc on roads.

What is parking like in Detroit?

Parking in Detroit is plentiful, especially compared to larger cities like Chicago or New York. Look for metered street parking, public garages, or designated parking areas near popular attractions like the Detroit Riverwalk or Comerica Park. There are plenty sprinkled around Woodward Ave and E Congress St, just be sure to pay attention to airport signs and local parking restrictions.

Are there toll roads in Detroit?

Good news — there are no toll roads in Detroit! You can cruise freely from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport to downtown without worrying about extra charges.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Detroit?

Fueling up in Detroit is easy. Gas stations are scattered throughout the city and near major highways and streets like Gratiot Ave and Walter P Chrysler Fwy. For EV drivers, you’ll find charging stations at grocery stores, parking garages, and even some hotels. Planning a trip to the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport? Check out EV chargers near the McNamara Terminal Parking Garage for a quick top-up.

Do I need to rent a car in Detroit?

Detroit is a city built for cars, so renting one is highly recommended if you want to explore beyond the city limits. While there is public transportation, having your own rental vehicle provides the freedom to visit nearby attractions like Ann Arbor or the Henry Ford Museum at your own pace.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Detroit?

From budget-friendly to full-blown luxury, Turo’s car rental options at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport are as varied as the Motor City itself.

Choose from compact cars like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic for zipping around downtown, midsize sport luxury sedans such as the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4 for a touch of class, or extended luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLE, or Lincoln Navigator for road trips to Sleeping Bear Dunes or Mackinac Island. Popular models also include the Tesla Model S, BMW X5, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Whatever your style, there’s a rental vehicle ready to roll.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Detroit?

The cost of car rental in Detroit can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Detroit, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn’t accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
