Smooth ride, clean car, and an excellent host. Michael made the whole rental process effortless. Would definitely rent from him again!

We had a lot of fun with John's car. The car is in good shape and has more range than you think. We kept to the Kona coast mostly and were very comfortable able with it, did one drive to Hilo and back via Waimea no problem. John was super helpful and meet us at the airport, which made all that super simple. Our kids loved the teal blue color and something about it made us feel a little more like a local than other rental cars.
My wife and I planned a trip to the Big Island nearly a year in advance to celebrate our 59th anniversary. We didn’t realize that December is such a high-demand time in Hawaii, and rental cars were extremely limited. Through Turo, we found a 2010 Kia offered by James D., a Big Island resident, and felt fortunate just to secure a vehicle. The process was smooth from start to finish. We used the car for a week, drove it as needed, and returned it on time without any issues. At drop-off, a young lady greeted us and was very gracious, making the experience even easier. We highly recommend James D. if you’re looking to rent a car on the Big Island.

As always, it’s a pleasure to rent from Brian. Great car at a great price, and he’s super accommodating. Thanks Brian.

Had to rent a vehicle super last minute for a work trip, and I was so grateful to find this one! Communication was great, the car was clean, and it was amazing on gas. Even though it’s a little older, this Honda Civic is honestly the perfect Kona cruiser. It got us everywhere we needed to go, and as someone from Kona, I really don’t love rental cars or vehicles that totally stick out. This one was perfect for getting around Kona town without feeling flashy or out of place. I also messed up the return time, and the host was incredibly kind and accommodating. They quickly walked me through how to extend the trip and made the whole thing so easy. 10/10 would absolutely recommend renting from them.
Fantastic BMW convertible for a great price. The car was a dream to drive. Michael & Heather were great hosts. Literally my best car rental experience ever.

The car did everything we needed it to do. We felt like a local, the car was certainly clean for the price. I would rent again because the price was right and it was great on gas. Like an ant sipping water. Pick up and drop off was easy enough. Took us a few min to find the car then it was very easy to drop off. Mahalo.

Great car! Loved the beach chairs included. Worked great for our trip thank you!!

The car was perfect for our trip around the big island. Great gas mileage and easy to maneuver. The host was very easy to work with. Would definitely get this car again
Nabil and team were absolutely fantastic! Easy reservation, fair price and great communication. While an older vehicle, the car was in perfect working order.

Great car at a very fair price to get you from point a to point b with cold AC. The host had clear instructions for picking up and dropping off the vehicle and was easy to communicate with. Would absolutely rent again from her!

Chelsea was an incredible host. She was very quick to respond. The car was in perfect condition. It got 39mpg and fit all our luggage. We will definitely rent from Chelsea next time we are on the big island!
Ken is awesome. He was willing to help pick us up and drop us off at the airport. When the car did not start, he responded quickly. I was dumb letting the battery drain. He was willing to help jump it or have a friend help out. We loved how smooth the car drove. If we returned I would go with Ken again! If you are from out of town on vacation don’t go over 10 mph on empty highways.

Pick up location great, fun car, but some cockroaches.. thanks Hawaii lol. Was easy to rent with this owner

We are so happy with Christy and her car. She made the entire experience easy. The car was very clean and right where we requested her to leave it. We rented from her twice this month and if we were staying longer we’d rent again! We highly recommend!!
The car was perfect for my trip!! It’s compact so easy to drive. The AC works, the aux cord doubles as a charger which was so nice!! A clean car with lots of space for being so little!! 10/10 would definitely reccomend for your trip! The host was so kind and quick to respond when I reached out!

Car is super nice. Messed up on my trip time and was easy to change. Thank you so much. Would totally turo with them again!!
Michael might be one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. He went out of his way to drop off an adapter at our hotel before our trip officially began. He’s very thorough with his instructions at the time of pick up if it’s your first time driving a Tesla. For those wondering, on the Big Island, a Tesla Model 3 has enough range to go almost anywhere on a full charge other than the Volcano area. You can drive from Hilo all the way up north with all the stops and get to the north western side of the island without recharging. If you drive to Volcano from the west side of the island, make sure the car is fully charged. You can recharge in Hilo and come back to Volcano with a 30 min drive to explore Chain of Craters Rd without anxiety. There’s an EV charger at the south end of the island that’s absolutely critical for getting the car to Hilo where the next chargers, but it was unfortunately not working. If you can recharge there, exploring the Volcano National Park is a breeze.

Awesome car for the price! Great trip, great gas mileage to get around island. Would rent again

Pickup near or at Airports
Ready to explore Hawaii’s spectacular west side? Here are essential car rental tips, from parking spots to vehicle types, to make your Kailua-Kona adventure smooth and stress-free!
Driving in Hawaii means taking it slow and steady — speed limits are generally lower than the mainland, with 50-55mph on the H1 freeway and 65 mph only on the fast left lane. Other Hawaii road rules are very standard — wear your seatbelts, keep right unless passing or turning left, stop at stop signs, and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
If you're renting a car, just be aware of peak hours and any special events going on to avoid traffic — especially along Ali'i Drive or near KOA airport.
Typically, Hawaii presents beautiful sunny skies. However, sudden tropical rain showers can make roads slippery — so check the forecast and drive carefully! For those traveling to Hilo from Kona via Saddle Road — be ready for changing conditions like cooler temps, fog, or even ice at higher elevations. Drive smart and enjoy the drive!
Parking in Kailua-Kona is conveniently spread throughout the area, with the highest concentration in the downtown Historic Kailua Village. You'll find roughly the same amount of parking tucked behind shopping centers, restaurants, and alongside streets such as Aliʻi Drive and Kuakini Highway.
Notable spots with clustered parking include Kona Inn Shopping Village, Coconut Grove Marketplace, Aliʻi Sunset Plaza, and the area near Kailua Pier. While there’s no large central garage, parking is generally easy to find — though it can get tight during peak hours or major events. For travelers flying in, Kona Intl Airport offers two large public lots with plenty of space.
No, there are no toll roads in Kailua-Kona or anywhere on the entire Hawaii Island.
Getting around Kailua-Kona is easy, whether you're driving a gas or electric vehicle. The area has plenty of gas stations conveniently located near main roads and shopping centers, with local fuel prices varying depending on location and supply.
For electric vehicle drivers, Kailua-Kona also offers a considerable network of public EV charging stations around town — making it simple to charge up while you shop, dine, or explore.
When you rent in Kailua Kona, you unlock a world of adventure across the entire island — not everything here is walkable. Turo makes it easy with convenient airport pickup, so you can hit the road the moment you land. Whether you need a spacious SUV to load up your snorkel gear, a sleek car for breathtaking coastal drives, or a reliable, rugged 4WD to reach the majestic Mauna Kea Summit, with Turo, you can find the perfect match for you.
