Top tips for renting a truck in Chicago

Planning on booking a truck rental in Chicago? From parking to choosing the right truck size, here’s what you should know before picking up the keys.

Tips for driving a truck in Chicago

Remember you’re handling a larger vehicle with extra length, width, and weight.

This means you'll need to be extra cautious and give yourself ample turning radius. Chicago streets can be narrow and full of one-way routes. This is especially so in downtown garages, alleys, or tight residential streets. Allow extra braking time, as the added weight affects handling, stopping power, and stability.

Many modern pickups and mid-size trucks come with parking assist, rearview cameras, and sensors, which are helpful for navigating Chicago’s tight streets and crowded lots. Use these features to drive confidently and safely.

What is parking a truck like in Chicago?

Parking a truck in Chicago can be more challenging than in many cities, especially downtown and in older neighborhoods with narrow streets.

The city offers a mix of street parking, public lots, and garages. Many garages and lots have height restrictions, so check clearance if you’re driving a tall truck or van.

Residential streets often have permit zones, meters, and street cleaning rules, so pay attention to posted signs. During peak times or near public buildings and busy neighborhoods, parking can be tight, so plan ahead.

For neighborhood errands or moving trips, smaller trucks are easier to maneuver, and off-peak hours make loading and parking much smoother.

How to choose the right type of truck for your Chicago trip

The right truck depends on your plans. Here's what you should consider:

Cargo capacity: Size and weight

Seating: Regular cab or extended cab

Drive type: 2WD vs 4WD

Safety features: Parking sensors, lane departure alert

For moving apartments or houses, a full-size truck with a large bed is ideal. If you're just doing some everyday errands or making a small move, a mid-size truck is easier to drive and park on Chicago’s busy streets and narrow residential roads. If you’re carrying tools, equipment, or materials for work, choose a heavy-duty truck with extra payload.

The winter months in Chicago can bring snow and ice, so consider a truck with good traction or 4WD if you’re driving across the city. Downtown or neighborhood trips? Smaller trucks are easier to maneuver through tight streets, alleys, and parking garages.

Check the Turo app to find the right truck for your Chicago task and book today.

Loading a truck

Loading up your truck rental? Follow these tips for a safe and easy journey:

Check the truck’s maximum load capacity before hauling.

Distribute weight evenly to keep the truck stable.

Secure items with straps, ropes, or blankets to prevent shifting.

Plan for tight streets and alleys. Chicago neighborhoods have narrow streets and limited parking that may not be suited for loading and unloading.

Be mindful of parking restrictions. Many streets have residential permit zones, meters, or street cleaning schedules. Consider how much time you need to load your truck.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Chicago

Use apps like Google Maps or PlugShare to find the nearest gas station or EV charger in Chicago and check their hours before you go.

Chicago has plenty of gas stations along major roads like Chicago Ave and Van Buren St, making it easy to fuel up while driving a rental truck. Keep in mind that many trucks require diesel, so always check the pump before filling.

Renting an EV truck or hybrid? Chargers are common across the city, including at shopping centers, hotels, parking lots, and gas stations.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
