Kay was great. At first we were upgraded but I wanted the original smaller car (with less miles) so we swapped on the 3rd day and got my original pick. I liked that car better, but the upgrade did have a backup camera, more room, sunroof and more, so it was missed when I we t for the smaller car. My first Turo and it worked great!

The car was great. Exactly as presented and very clean. Kay was a fabulous host. She provided lots of great information about Molokai after we made our reservation. She was available during the 5 days of our rental when we had a question, and on the last day when we had a hiccup in our plans due to a much delayed flight, she was exceptionally accommodating. A first class host!!!

Discovering Molokai's hidden treasures and scenic wonders from Molokai Airport

Your adventure begins with access to some of Hawaii's most untouched landscapes and cultural treasures. Explore the expansive Papohaku Beach, one of Hawaii's longest white sand beaches, perfect for sunset strolls and solitude. Visit Kaunakakai town for authentic local culture and historic sites, then venture to the dramatic Kalaupapa Peninsula overlook for breathtaking views. The island's ancient fishponds along the southern shore offer glimpses into traditional Hawaiian aquaculture. An SUV ensures comfortable travel across varied terrain while providing ample space for beach gear, hiking equipment, and souvenirs from your Molokai explorations.

Papohaku Beach's endless shores and sunset magic

Papohaku Beach stretches for nearly three miles along Molokai's western coast, offering one of Hawaii's most spectacular and uncrowded beach experiences. The golden sand beach provides perfect conditions for beachcombing, photography, and witnessing incredible Pacific sunsets. You'll find ample space for relaxation without the typical tourist crowds found elsewhere in Hawaii. The beach access road is well-maintained, and parking areas accommodate various vehicle types comfortably. Your rental SUV provides the ground clearance and stability needed for the slightly elevated parking areas, while offering plenty of cargo space for beach chairs, umbrellas, and picnic supplies for your perfect beach day.

Kaunakakai town's authentic Hawaiian charm

Kaunakakai serves as Molokai's main town, where you'll experience genuine Hawaiian small-town atmosphere. The historic wharf area showcases the island's fishing heritage, while local shops offer handcrafted goods and traditional Hawaiian products. You can explore authentic eateries serving local specialties and visit the Saturday morning farmers market for fresh tropical fruits. The town's compact layout makes parking straightforward, with designated areas near the main street and wharf. The relaxed pace allows you to truly connect with local culture and history while enjoying the unhurried island lifestyle.

Halawa Valley's ancient beauty and cultural significance

Halawa Valley represents one of Hawaii's oldest continuously inhabited settlements, featuring lush tropical vegetation and spectacular waterfalls cascading down verdant cliffs. The valley showcases traditional Hawaiian agriculture terraces and archaeological sites that speak to centuries of Polynesian culture. You'll discover hiking opportunities leading to pristine swimming holes and panoramic valley views. The winding road into the valley requires careful navigation, making an SUV an excellent choice for handling the curves and elevation changes safely. The valley's remote location ensures a peaceful experience surrounded by untouched natural beauty and profound cultural significance that defines authentic Molokai.

Ancient fishponds along Molokai's southern coastline

Molokai's southern shore features the most extensive collection of ancient Hawaiian fishponds in the island chain, representing sophisticated aquaculture systems developed over centuries. These stone-walled enclosures demonstrate remarkable engineering skills of early Polynesian settlers who created sustainable food sources. You can observe these historical marvels while learning about traditional Hawaiian resource management practices. The coastal drive provides multiple viewing points and photo opportunities along well-maintained roads with convenient pullouts for safe stops and exploration.

Kalaupapa Peninsula overlook's dramatic clifftop views

The Kalaupapa Peninsula overlook offers one of Hawaii's most dramatic and historically significant viewpoints, where towering sea cliffs plunge dramatically into the Pacific Ocean below. This remote peninsula holds deep cultural and historical importance in Hawaiian history, visible from the clifftop vantage point accessible by car. The overlook provides unparalleled photo opportunities of the rugged coastline and vast ocean expanse stretching to the horizon. The drive to the overlook follows well-maintained roads through diverse landscapes, from coastal areas to higher elevations. Your rental car ensures comfortable access to this remarkable destination while providing space for photography equipment and refreshments during your clifftop visit.

Frequently asked questions in Molokai Airport

Why should I rent an SUV at Molokai Airport?

An SUV rental at Molokai Airport provides the elevated driving position and cargo space needed to explore Hawaii's remote beaches and hiking trails with all your gear. The island's unpaved roads leading to secluded spots like Papohaku Beach are better navigated in a spacious SUV that can handle various terrain types. Molokai's rural character means you'll appreciate the extra storage for supplies and equipment during your island adventure.

What driving rules should I know before leaving Molokai Airport?

Hawaii follows right-hand traffic with a maximum speed limit of 45 mph on most Molokai roads, though many areas are much slower due to winding coastal routes. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and using handheld devices while driving is prohibited throughout the state. The island has very few traffic signals, so yield signs and stop signs govern most intersections as you explore from your Molokai airport car rental.

Can I get car rental discounts on Turo?

You can get discounts and low cost car rental on Turo. On your Account page, make sure you've checked the box to receive email notifications, and enable push notifications from the Turo app in your phone settings — we'll send you occasional promo codes, discounts, and deals. Additionally, frequent travelers on Turo can get rewarded with the loyalty bonus — earn a promo code for one bonus day when you take trips totaling 10 days in a 90-day period.

How do I drive from Molokai Airport to downtown?

From Molokai Airport, head east on Airport Road until you reach Highway 460, then turn right toward Kaunakakai, which serves as the island's downtown area. The route takes you through rural landscapes and small communities before reaching the main town with its shops and restaurants. Your rental car will easily navigate this straightforward path along the island's primary highway system.

What documents and paperwork do I need to rent a car on Turo?

To rent a car on Turo, you must create a Turo account, have a valid driver's license, get approved to drive on Turo, and be 18 years old or older in the US, 21 years old or older in Australia, or 23 years old or older in Canada. In the UK, you must be 21 years old or older and have held a UK or EU license for at least one year, or another driver's license for at least two years. In France you must be 18 years old or older and have held a driver's license for at least 2 years, longer for certain makes and models of vehicles. When you're booking your first trip, you'll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver's license and some other information. In most cases, you'll get approved immediately, and you'll be set for all future road trips, day trips, and business trips!

Are there toll roads near Molokai Airport?

Molokai has no toll roads whatsoever, making your car rental experience completely free of additional road fees. The entire island operates on a simple road network without any paid bridges, tunnels, or express lanes that require tolls. Your vehicle can access all of Molokai's destinations without worrying about carrying cash or transponders for road usage fees.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver's licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn't accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner's permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

What are the most popular SUV road trip routes from Molokai Airport?

The scenic drive to Halawa Valley offers stunning waterfalls and ancient Hawaiian sites, perfect for an SUV adventure with ample cargo space for hiking gear. Papohaku Beach on the west end provides one of Hawaii's longest white sand beaches, accessible via roads that benefit from an SUV's higher clearance. The journey to Kalaupapa Lookout delivers breathtaking cliff views of the historic peninsula below, making it a must-see destination for your Molokai car rental exploration.

Where can I find gas stations near Molokai Airport?

Gas stations on Molokai are primarily located in Kaunakakai, the island's main town, rather than directly at the airport area. You'll find a couple of fuel options in the central part of the island where most services are concentrated. Plan to fuel up your rental car in town since gas stations are limited across this rural Hawaiian island.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don't need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo. In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host's vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you'll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that's right for you. On each trip, you're covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.* In New York state, you'll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you're covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.
