Toledo car rentals for any occasion

Some days call for your own wheels. If you’re weighing rideshares against freedom, here’s when keys to your own car rental make everything smoother.

purple lines

Work trips, site visits, and campus calls

Clients in Perrysburg, coffee in Sylvania, dinner back downtown — having a car turns three stops into one easy loop. A rental makes it easier to move between meetings, take calls in comfort, and carry materials without juggling rideshares.

Family weekends & park hopping

Zoo in the morning, Toledo Botanical Garden after lunch, playground sprints until everyone falls asleep in the back seat. A roomier car and easy parking make it simpler to move between stops without turning the day into a string of short trips.

Date nights

Golden hour on the Maumee, a table that doesn’t rush you, and a slow cruise home. The right rental car makes the evening feel planned even when it wasn’t.

Things to do and places to see in Toledo, OH

Toledo is easy to explore at a relaxed pace, with a strong glassmaking legacy, a growing gallery scene, and neighborhoods that lead naturally toward the river. Start with an schedule: drive along the Maumee, stop for coffee on Adams Street, then decide whether to head toward the waterfront or the Metroparks. Distances are short, traffic is manageable, and the best stops are often the unplanned ones. Bring a light jacket, leave some flexibility in your schedule, and be ready to pull over when the view catches your eye.

Toledo Zoo

One of the Midwest’s standout attractions, with spacious habitats that encourage lingering and plenty of kid-friendly areas that can turn a quick stop into a full afternoon. Arrive early on weekends for simpler parking, then reward yourself with a relaxed drive along Broadway or the river. If you’ve got strollers or snacks, look for standard SUVs or full-size cars with a touch more space.

Maumee Bay State Park

Boardwalks wind through the marsh, beaches stretch along the lake, and sunsets are a highlight. Bring layers and a picnic, and plan a scenic drive back via Curtice or Navarre—both are easy, relaxed routes. Weekends fill up quickly, so arriving mid-morning makes parking simpler and still leaves time for a late lunch in Ohio.

Toledo Botanical Garden & Metroparks

Sculptures dot the lawns, colorful gardens line the paths, and shaded walkways keep things quiet and relaxed. It pairs well with a stop at Wildwood or Side Cut for an easy two-park day. If you plan to visit multiple trailheads, map your route ahead of time so you can spend more time walking and less time navigating between stops.

Top tips for renting a car in Toledo

Treat the airport as your springboard. Once booked, the Turo app will point you to a pickup near the airport, and from there, Toledo opens up quickly; riverfront one way, dunes and boardwalks the other. If you’ll bounce between downtown and the suburbs, choose vehicle classes that match your route: smaller size cars for curbside nooks, standard SUVs for park days, or (when available) a premium luxury sedan or premium luxury SUV for client dinners.

How does airport pickup work near Toledo Express Airport?

When booking on Turo, you'll pickup your car near the Toledo Express Airport, not inside the terminal complex. After your reservation is confirmed, your trip page in the Turo app lists the meeting point and timing. Follow signs out of the terminal, head to the location in your reservation, complete photo check-in, and go. It’s airport car rental minus the line.

How does drop-off work near Toledo Express Airport?

Before you wrap, send a quick in-app message to confirm the nearby return spot. Snap checkout photos and follow the key exchange steps in your trip details. Once your car is returned, you’ll be on your way in minutes, ready to catch your departing flight.

How far is Toledo Express Airport from Downtown Toledo?

Toledo Express Airport is about a 20–25 minute drive west of downtown under normal traffic. The route along Airport Highway is straightforward, and most days you’ll be in the city shortly after leaving the airport.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Toledo?

Airport Highway and Reynolds move well outside rush, while I-475 and I-75 carry the heavy lifters. Keep it hands-free, slow down near school zones, and leave room on rainy evenings when the river air gets slick. Winter weather can change quickly, so monitor the forecast and adjust your schedule accordingly.

What is parking like in Toledo?

Downtown garages serve the arena and ballpark, while street spaces turn over quickly around the Warehouse District and Summit. For riverfront dinners, look one block off the main drag; it’s usually calmer and still within walking distance. When visiting parks, follow ranger signage and avoid driving or parking on grass to help protect the grounds.

Are there toll roads in Toledo?

Headed east or west for a bigger loop? The Ohio Turnpike carries a toll, so check your route if you’re planning long interstate stretches. City driving is usually toll-free, but if a faster route pops up, it’s worth weighing the time saved against any extra fees.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Toledo?

Fuel is plentiful along Airport Highway, follow signs toward Reynolds or Byrne and you’ll pass options every few blocks. For EVs, look to major shopping corridors on Monroe and Secor, hotel lots near the university, and newer plazas in Perrysburg and Maumee. The easiest move is a top-off near dinner, so your morning starts without having to find a gas station.

Do I need to rent a car in Toledo?

If you’re staying close to downtown, you can cover a day on foot with the help of a few rideshares. But many of the area’s highlights: river overlooks, Metroparks, and neighborhoods outside the core, are spread a few miles apart. Renting a car near the airport makes it easier to explore at your own pace and keep your schedule flexible.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Toledo?

You’ll find a mix across the following vehicle classes: compact cars for tight curbs, standard SUVs for park days, and, even electric luxury suvs for a quiet glide. Named favorites in the area include Jeep Gladiator, Lexus NX, Toyota RAV4, and Kia K5. Filter by vehicle classes to match route, passengers, and parking comfort, then check your reservation details in the Turo app for the pickup location and the address shown once your rental is set.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Toledo?

The cost of car rental in Toledo can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Toledo, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

You don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. Liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency. For questions about how damage to a host’s vehicle is handled, visit the Turo Support site.

When a trip is booked in the state of Washington, physical damage to the host’s vehicle is covered by insurance purchased by Turo, but Turo’s insurance does not change the contractual responsibilities of hosts or guests with respect to physical damage to a host’s vehicle.
