Our experience with this Turo rental was outstanding from start to finish. The host was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire trip. The car was in excellent condition and ran perfectly. It got us around without a single issue and made our trip smooth and stress-free. What truly stood out was the host’s generosity and hospitality at the end of our rental. After we returned the car, he kindly allowed us to wait in his driveway and even provided a couple of lawn chairs while we waited about 15 minutes for our Uber on a very hot day. That thoughtful gesture meant a lot to us and showed how much he genuinely cares about his guests. We highly recommend renting from this host. Great car, excellent service, and an all-around wonderful experience!

Top tips for renting a car in Reading

Renting a car in Reading connects the dots between the city's downtown grid, hillside lookouts, and the patchwork of towns and fields that surround it all. The network of US-422, US-222, and Route 12 forms a triangle that lets you loop between Center City, Wyomissing, Muhlenberg, and beyond without detours.

A car also helps you work with the region's commuting patterns. When you control the vehicle, you can shift your timing, stopping for coffee or a quick errand. The result? A trip that feels tailor-made to your interests.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Reading?

Reading's speed limits often sit between 25 and 35 mph, with lower speeds mostly in residential areas and school zones. Routes like US-422 and US-222 allow higher speeds but can compress near interchanges, so be mindful of merging traffic.

Driving conditions depend on the season and terrain. In warmer months, you can expect smooth conditions, though construction zones can pop up on the main routes and bridges. In winter, snow and ice make the hills more challenging, especially in the early morning or late at night.

What is parking like in Reading?

Parking in Reading is manageable compared with larger cities, but it changes by neighborhood and time of day. Downtown near Penn Street and Santander Arena, you will find a mix of street parking, surface lots, and garages. Events can quickly fill the closest options, so arriving a bit early or being willing to walk a little pays off.

In areas like West Reading and Wyomissing, especially along Penn Avenue and near the Reading Public Museum, parking often feels more relaxed. On weekends and during festivals, those streets can feel busy, but most visitors still find a spot without endless circling.

Are there toll roads in Reading?

There aren't any toll roads in Reading, and your everyday drives on US-422 and US-222 won't have them either. You can drive out to places like Blue Marsh Lake, area parks, or neighboring towns without ever passing through a toll plaza.

If you plan to travel further, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and other regional toll facilities may come into play, especially if you head towards Philadelphia or the Pittsburgh side of the state. Those routes are outside city limits but are useful for longer journeys.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Reading?

Gas stations are easy to find in Reading, especially around Lancaster Avenue, Fifth Street Highway, and near the interchange on US-422 and US-222. For electric vehicles, charging infrastructure has grown steadily. You'll find public chargers at some shopping centers, hotels, and campuses.

Do I need to rent a car in Reading?

Some pockets of West Reading and Wyomissing let you live a compact life for a few days, but most visitors find that renting a car on Turo unlocks the best parts of the city. Distances between downtown, the hills, the mall areas, and nearby lakes can be less consistent in some residential and rural pockets.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

Think options like the Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Ford Focus, and Subaru Impreza. Whichever direction you go, renting in Reading means pairing the right car with a landscape of river bends, city blocks, and rolling countryside so that every drive supports the kind of trip you came to have.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
