Fredericksburg, Virginia

Fredericksburg Hauntings Tours

Fredericksburg has more ghosts than any other city in America, so why not take a ghost tour? They're not exactly for the faint-hearted; you'll by guided via candlelight by a guide in historic attire to find historic battle sites, local history, and even local notable cemeteries. Most tours are $15 per person for a 90-minute tour, but cemetery walks span $60 minutes for $20, with part of the proceeds being donated to the cemetery at hand.

Old Town Fredericksburg

Also called the Historic District, Old Town Fredericksburg is part of the National Register of Historic Places. Eat at a variety of local restaurants, see the Rising Sun Tavern Museum (built by George Washington's brother!), explore Cossee Botanical Park, or learn about the armed forces at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. There's plenty for you to do in downtown alone!

Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop

For something both unique and educational, find your way to the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop. Founded by a Scottish doctor named—you guessed it!—Hugh Mercer, this shop was the site of many medical procedures. Mercer himself treated both George Washington and his mother Mary. Nowadays, the apothecary functions as a museum of medicine, political, and military events.

Top tips for renting a car in Fredericksburg

Every rental car handles differently, but it doesn't matter if you get an EV or a hefty pickup truck: tips for the road can always help. Here are some tips that'll help get you from Mile Fork Shopping Center to Shenandoah National Park and beyond.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Fredericksburg?

Driving in most of Fredericksburg is fine. Wintertime doesn't bring much snow—only around 13 inches per year—but you'll want to make sure you're confident in wet conditions. Fredericksburg sees 42 inches of rain annually, with a good amount of it coming from severe thunderstorms. You'll want to make sure to choose a rental car accordingly once you've checked the forecast.

There's one more thing to note, however. If there's an accident on 95, traffic can pile up with drivers trying to use side streets. While it's absolutely manageable, the I-95 from Fairfax County Parkway to Fredericksburg was found to be the worst traffic hotspot in the USA in a 2017 review of the top hotspots. It may not be as bad as Los Angeles or New York, but you'll still want to pack your patient pants.

What is parking like in Fredericksburg?

The most complex place to find parking would probably be downtown Fredericksburg, with the rest of the city having relatively straightforward lots. Downtown has 10 different free lots, in which the availability varies—that includes not just the actual availability of spots, but the time limits and hours of enforcement. Each one will have the relevant information posted.

The downtown area also houses one paid lot and two different paid garages, with fees and timing varying as well. For instance, the Sophia Street Parking Garage has a fee of $2 for the first three hours of parking, followed by $1 per hour up to a max of $8 total. Signage will always indicate the current parking terms, so be on the lookout. Don't, however, be on the lookout for meters; downtown Fredericksburg does not allow street parking.

Are there toll roads in Fredericksburg?

Fredericksburg itself doesn't have any toll roads, but you'll want to consult maps and city websites if you want to go anywhere outside of the city. Heading north to Washington D.C., the I-95 has several Express Lanes that smooth out traffic in exchange for tolls in those specific lanes. D.C. also has an actual toll road in Dulles Toll Road, toward the west area of the city. Also, Richmond has a few toll roads scattered throughout, so the best thing would be to check routes for where you specifically want to go during your time in Fredericksburg.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Fredericksburg?

Rest easy: Fredericksburg has plenty of gas stations and EV chargers alike. If you're running low on charge or fuel, you'll never be very far from a station to keep your trip rolling.

Do I need to rent a car in Fredericksburg?

Downtown Fredericksburg is fairly walkable, but if you plan on seeing anything else in the city (or elsewhere!), you'll want to invest in a rental car. Public transit in Fredericksburg can take a while and be inconvenient depending on where stops are located compared to your plans.
