Car rental in Cleveland is your golden ticket to experiencing all the city has to offer, from Lake Erie views to a booming food scene. Whether you’re arriving at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) or heading downtown, the right set of wheels can make or break your trip.
With Turo, say goodbye to the hassle of traditional rental car counters and hello to picking up the exact ride you’ve been dreaming of — no surprises unless you count Cleveland’s unpredictable weather. Here are our top tips for a stress-free driving experience in Cleveland.
At Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Turo keeps things simple and smooth. Since in-person handovers aren’t allowed, you’ll pick up your ride in one of the designated parking areas, like the Smart Parking Garage, Orange Lot, or Red Lot. Before you arrive, coordinate with your host via Turo messaging for all the juicy details about your rental car's location.
If you're collecting your car from the Blue, Brown, Orange, or Red lot, push the intercom button at the exit gate and tell the parking staff that you’re a Turo guest picking up a vehicle. They’ll take your payment and allow you to exit.
For the Smart Parking Garage, follow the airport signs for parking, grab the ticket left in the vehicle (you'll need to pay for it with a credit card), and you’re on your way. It's as effortless as a Lake Erie breeze!
Returning your rental car at CLE Airport is just as seamless as picking it up. Park in any permitted lot (Smart Parking Garage, Red Lot, or Brown Lot) no more than four hours before the trip ends.
If you choose to park in the Blue, Brown, Orange, or Red lot, you'll have to use your credit card to enter the lot. Don't worry, your card won’t be charged, and no ticket will be issued.
If you're parking in the Smart Parking Garage, use the entrance ticket to leave it in the car for your host, and message them with the exact parking stall. With Turo’s remote check-out, you can avoid frantic goodbyes at the rental car facility and head straight to your departure gate stress-free.
The drive from Cleveland Hopkins Airport to downtown Cleveland is a breezy 14 miles, taking anywhere from 15–25 minutes in your premium luxury sedan (or whatever fabulous vehicle you booked on Turo). Hop on I-71 N for a straight shot into the city, where you’ll pass stadiums, skyscrapers, and Lake Erie’s iconic views. With no need for a rental car shuttle, you’ll skip the queues and roll into downtown in style.
Driving in Cleveland is generally straightforward, but there are a few quirks to keep in mind. Keep an eye out for changing speed limits that range from 25 miles per hour (mph) in residential streets to 70 mph on freeways, and look out for those especially near schools or construction zones.
Cleveland winters can turn the roads into a slippery challenge, so rent a sturdy SUV if visiting during the colder months. For city driving, don’t let potholes catch you off guard — they’re Cleveland’s unofficial mascots. And yes, your valid driver’s license is required to drive any Turo rental vehicle here.
Parking in Cleveland ranges from super convenient to a game of musical chairs. Downtown Cleveland has plenty of public garages and metered spots, but they tend to fill up quickly during big events at Progressive Field or Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Your best bet? Secure a spot at an easy spot like Playhouse Square (1450 Chester Ave) or ABM Parking Garage on 1717 East 9th Street, or keep your Ford Mustang Convertible ready for quick escapes.
Good news — Cleveland itself is a toll-free zone! However, if you’re planning a road trip to nearby cities or passing through the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90), be prepared for some toll booths.
Gas stations are plentiful near Hopkins International Airport and across Cleveland at spots like 3501 Lorain Avenue and 2850 W 25th Street, so fueling up your car before returning it is a cinch.
For eco-conscious travelers cruising in an EV, there are plenty of EV chargers located along Euclid Avenue and in parking garages, shopping centers, and even the Smart Parking Garage at the airport.
Absolutely! Cleveland’s public transport is functional but limited compared to having your own wheels. Whether you’re heading to downtown Cleveland, catching a game at FirstEnergy Stadium, or exploring nearby gems like Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a rental car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace.
Turo offers a variety of rental vehicles to suit every trip. Whether you’re eyeing a compact Toyota Corolla, a sporty Ford Mustang Convertible, or a luxurious Tesla Model 3, Turo has you covered. Options range from full-size luxury SUVs to midsize sport sedans. Choose from eco-friendly models like the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid or go big with an extended luxury SUV for the whole crew. Whatever your style, Turo has a ride that fits perfectly.
The cost of car rental in Cleveland can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rental deals in Cleveland, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.
To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

List of airport locations* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. Liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.
For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency. For questions about how damage to a host’s vehicle is handled, visit the Turo Support site.
When a trip is booked in the state of Washington, physical damage to the host’s vehicle is covered by insurance purchased by Turo, but Turo’s insurance does not change the contractual responsibilities of hosts or guests with respect to physical damage to a host’s vehicle.
