Things to do and places to see in Washington

Washington offers incredible attractions easily accessible by car, from the iconic National Mall with its monuments and memorials to the historic neighborhoods of Georgetown and Dupont Circle. You can drive to the Smithsonian museums, explore the vibrant U Street Corridor, or venture to the scenic Potomac waterfront. Having a van rental provides the flexibility to visit multiple attractions in a single day while accommodating your entire group comfortably.

National Mall and Memorial Parks

The National Mall serves as America's front yard, featuring the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and numerous Smithsonian museums within walking distance of each other. You'll find several parking options around the Mall, including metered street parking and paid lots near the museums. Georgetown Historic District

Georgetown charms visitors with its Federal-style architecture, upscale shopping along M Street, and waterfront parks along the Potomac River. You can find parking in the area's public garages or along residential streets, though spaces fill quickly during peak times. A van rental proves especially useful here for shopping excursions and transporting purchases from Georgetown's boutiques and markets back to your accommodation.

Top tips for renting a van in Washington

Book your van rental early on Turo to secure the best vehicle for your group's needs, especially during peak tourist seasons and political events. Look for vans with features like backup cameras for navigating tight D.C. streets, keyless entry for convenient group access, and all-wheel drive if you plan to explore areas outside the city. Consider passenger capacity carefully since Washington offers numerous group-friendly attractions, and choose a van with ample cargo space for museum souvenirs and shopping finds from Georgetown and other neighborhoods.

Frequently asked questions in Washington

Which van size works best for Washington family trips?

A 7-8 passenger van provides ideal space for families exploring Washington D.C.'s museums and monuments without feeling cramped. Mid-size vans offer excellent maneuverability through Georgetown's narrow streets while providing ample storage for luggage and souvenirs. Consider cargo space needs when visiting multiple attractions around the National Mall area.

What should first-time van drivers expect in Washington?

Washington D.C. features busy traffic circles and one-way streets that require extra attention when driving larger vehicles. Van drivers should practice parallel parking before exploring Dupont Circle or Georgetown neighborhoods. The height clearance in some parking garages near the National area may restrict access for taller passenger vans.

How do you park a van in Washington's busy areas?

Street parking in Washington requires careful attention to posted time limits and residential permit zones throughout D.C. neighborhoods. Many surface parking lots near major attractions accommodate vans better than underground garages. Consider parking slightly outside central areas like Georgetown and using public transit for final destination access.

Are passenger vans better than cargo vans for groups?

Passenger vans offer superior comfort with individual seating and climate control for group trips around Washington's attractions. These vehicles typically include better sound insulation and entertainment features for longer journeys to Virginia or other nearby areas. Cargo vans lack proper seating and safety features required for transporting multiple passengers.

How can you stay comfortable during long van journeys?

Adjust seats and mirrors before departing Washington to ensure optimal driving position and visibility. Plan regular stops when traveling beyond D.C. to Alexandria or other regional destinations to stretch and refresh. Maintain proper ventilation and temperature control to keep all passengers comfortable throughout your trip.

What van safety features matter most for city driving?

Backup cameras prove essential when navigating tight parking spaces in Washington's historic neighborhoods like Georgetown. Side mirrors with blind spot monitoring help manage lane changes on busy roads around the National area. Electronic stability control provides added confidence when driving larger rental vehicles through D.C.'s varied traffic conditions.

Is there unlimited mileage car rental on Turo?

Some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip; others set a daily distance limit — you'll need to check on each rental car individually to see if this service is provided. On the vehicle pages, you'll see the total miles or kilometers you're allowed to drive under the heading "Distance included." You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the "Unlimited distance" filter.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

No, you don't need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo. In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host's vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you'll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that's right for you. On each trip, you're covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.* In New York state, you'll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you're covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.
