If you read the info provided - vehicle pick up and drop off is easy! I read the reviews prior to renting, so I was prepared to drive a vehicle that has some quirks. Definitely needs some TLC at a mechanic, but didn’t give us any issues while driving around during the day! The host is very communicative and their response time was lightning fast.

A van rental in Austin is a great option if you're moving here to attend university, looking to plant permanent roots, or making a temporary work transition. Here are some things you should add to your itinerary.

Austin, TX

The Capitol in Downtown Austin

The Capitol's lush grounds are a picturesque place for an evening or afternoon stroll. But if you really want to learn how Austin became the capital of Texas or why the building is brown, not white, sign up for a tour. Keep in mind that if your group is larger than 10 people, you'll need to call to make a reservation. Dislike tours? You can take a self-guided tour instead. Just grab a brochure outside Capitol Room 1S.2 and learn about the building at your own pace. Afterward, picnic on the Capitol grounds or walk down Congress Avenue to discover a variety of eateries.

LBJ Museum

Step into history to learn how Lyndon B. Johnson assumed the presidency after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The museum is a fascinating look into Johnson's time as president, the legislation he passed, and his Great Society programs. Some standout sections are a smaller-scale replica of the Oval Office, the Vietnam exhibit, and Lady Bird's office, which offers a wonderful view of downtown Austin. Beyond exploring Johnson's time as president, the museum also highlights Johnson's Texas roots, offering a peek into the small-town beginnings that would shape the rest of his life.

Lady Bird Lake in Downtown Austin

If you plan to move to Austin, it's easy to imagine weekly runs, bike rides, or strolls around Lady Bird Lake. It's a gorgeous area, made more magnificent by the surrounding skyscrapers, restaurants, and bridges. Park under the Mopac bridge and set out to walk a complete loop. Along the way, stop for a coffee or juice break at the many cafes right by the Congress Bridge. If you prefer something more indulgent, have a wonderful lunch or dinner lakeside. There are fine-dining restaurants along the water, such as the Line Hotel's Arlo Grey or the Four Seasons Ciclo.

Moving Van Rental

Austin is one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., so if you're moving here, you're in good company. A cargo van rental gives you lots of space to haul your furniture, computer, and other equipment. Most Austin streets are wide, so driving a cargo van isn't too intimidating. If your move is taking you to a university here, like UT Austin or St. Edwards University, you'll need a moving van for items like a mini fridge, your e-bike/bicycle, or your computer.

Special Events Van Rental

Austin's SXSW, ACL, and Formula One events attract large crowds. To avoid having to find multiple parking spots (which cost a lot), aim to rent a van that can transport everyone at once. A passenger van rental means the entire crew can travel together from the event to the restaurant, without the chaos of trying to coordinate meetup spots as well. Splitting the van rental amongst friends may also be a more affordable option than renting separate cars.

Deliveries Van Rental

Now that you've relocated and you're buying new furniture, you'll need a cargo van to pick up your furniture and deliver it to your new home. A cargo rental van can ensure you make one trip, load everything into the van, and deliver it all at once. This can spare you from making smaller trips each time you purchase a new item.

Rental van pickup locations throughout Austin

Get your vehicle delivered right to you or wherever you’re going in Austin, TX, including Austin, TX airport. Many hosts offer delivery to custom locations or popular points of interest, like airports, train stations, and hotels. Popular Austin, TX pickup locations include:

Purple squiggle

Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)

Austin is a compact city compared to sprawling Dallas or Houston, which makes traveling from the AUS airport to downtown Austin hassle-free. If you're coming from another country, city, or state, skip the airport car rental counter once you land. After picking up your bags, open the Turo app to confirm the location of your airport van rental. Your van should be waiting in either the red or blue parking garage. Once the keys to the van are in your hand, head straight to the heart of the city.

Downtown Austin

Downtown Austin is a convenient pickup spot, allowing you to dive straight into the city's energy without having to worry about your ride. Plenty of parking garages dot the area, but if you want to be close to Lady Bird Lake, the Austin City Hall garage is a centrally located one. Another option is the Long Center garage, which charges $10 for the day. From there, you're right across from Butler Park, making it an ideal spot to park if you're here to see a show.

The Domain

The Domain is an open-air shopping and entertainment district about 20 minutes away from downtown Austin. One of the biggest advantages of choosing the Domain as a pickup spot, though, is its free parking. Multiple garages are spread out across the area, and each is conveniently color-coded. Just be sure to select the color garage you want based on the area you'll be spending time in. Once your van is safely parked in a garage, you can spend the day shopping, dining, and listening to music.

Top tips for renting a van in Austin

While renting a van offers more comfort, especially if you're traveling with a large group or you're moving equipment, its size makes it harder to handle and park. You'll also have to worry about the van's height when driving under underpasses. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you rent a cargo or passenger van.

What is parking a van like in Austin?

Vans take up more room, which can be challenging if you're parking on a small residential street. Many parking garages also have clearance levels that higher-roof vans can't fit under. To ensure you can find a parking space, research the area ahead of time and check maps that show open parking lots or wider streets. Vans have larger blind spots, too, so make sure to use any backup cameras or spotters to help you pull into tight parking spots.

How to choose the right type of van for your Austin trip

Choosing the right type of van for your Austin trip will depend on how many passengers you're traveling with, what you're hauling, and where you plan to park. If your group is between 3-5 people, a minivan is the best option. For medium groups of about 6-9 people, consider something with more room inside, like a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Large groups will need spacious passenger vans, like Ford Transit vans. On the other hand, if you're moving furniture or equipment, you'll need a cargo van with fewer windows but plenty of cargo space.

Loading a cargo van

Before you rent a cargo van, remember that every van has a maximum load capacity. Make sure to know what yours is so you don't make the mistake of overloading it. Load the heavier items first, and distribute them evenly so you don't experience "tipping" when you make turns. To prevent items from shifting or falling, secure everything with straps or bungee cords. Make sure to wrap any fragile items in bubble wrap, towels, or blankets to prevent them from breaking. And leave any items you'll need for the trip in a place that's easily accessible.

Gas stations and EV chargers in Austin

There are plenty of gas stations in Austin, especially along the frontage roads. You can find gas stations along Highway 183, the I-35, and the Mopac. Many vans run on diesel rather than regular gas, so double-check during your booking process which fuel type you should use.

For electric vans, there are lots of ChargePoint charging stations. You can also download the PlugShare app to find the nearest charging spot.
