Top tips for renting a car in Milwaukee

Whether you’re picking up your car at the airport or from downtown Milwaukee, a rental car is one of the best ways to explore the area and beyond. Here’s how to get road-ready and maximize your time when driving a rental car in Milwaukee.

How does airport pickup work at Milwaukee International Airport?

Picking up your rental car from Milwaukee Airport is quick and easy. You'll find the parking spot location on the Turo app. Once you land, simply exit baggage claim, head to the parking area, and find your car. Inside, you’ll find a ticket to exit the lot and you’re good to go. For in-person handoffs, meet your host in the Surface Lot and use Location Sharing on the app to save time.

How does drop-off work at Milwaukee International Airport?

When returning your car rental, head back to the airport parking lot no earlier than four hours before your trip ends, or as allowed by the permit.

Leave the parking ticket in the vehicle and message your host via the app with the location, including the section and stall numbers. Be sure to lock the car and place the keys in the lockbox.

If you're dropping off your car rental in person, head to the Surface Lot, stay with your car until your host arrives, hand over the keys, and you're all set.

How far is Milwaukee International Airport from Downtown Milwaukee?

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 6 miles south of downtown, making it a quick 10-minute drive.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Milwaukee?

In Milwaukee, always buckle up, have your driver’s license handy, and follow the usual US traffic light rules.

Keep an eye out for high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes marked with a white diamond sign. Some will have a number like HOV4, which indicates how many people need to be in the car to use the lane.

When driving, always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, cyclists in bike lanes, and cars that arrive at a four-way stop before you. If you get there at the same time as another car, give way to the one on your right.

Leave 20 feet of space for school buses that are loading or unloading, or when their lights are flashing. And if driving past a public or private school, slow down to 15 mph.

A few more speed limits to note:

- Within city limits: 35 mph

- Highways outside city limits: 55 mph

- Interstates, freeways, and expressways: 65 mph

What is parking like in Milwaukee?

Parking in Milwaukee is easy to navigate, with metered street parking, parking garages, and some free options available, making renting a car hassle-free. Street parking is usually metered from 6 AM to 9 PM, while parking lots are available in certain areas. Be sure to check posted signs for time restrictions.

You can also park at Lakeshore State Park, which offers free parking and scenic views, or near Bradford Beach, which is generally accessible, especially on weekdays. The main parking lot at 2400 N Lincoln Memorial Dr has 200 spaces and is free from 6 AM to 9 PM.

Are there toll roads in Milwaukee?

None — so there is no need to pay tolls electronically unless heading beyond Wisconsin.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Milwaukee?

Milwaukee has plenty of gas stations in convenient locations throughout the city. Local fuel prices fluctuate, so keep an eye out for competing prices once you're on the road. With over 100 EV charging ports, many of which are free, these are also easy to come by.

A few spots to park and charge your electric rental car include:

- ChargePoint at Schlitz Park – 1555 N River Center Dr

- ChargePoint at 833 E Michigan St – Downtown Milwaukee

Do I need to rent a car in Milwaukee?

Milwaukee’s downtown is walkable and well-covered by The Hop streetcar and local buses, but if you're planning to bounce between beaches, parks, and neighborhoods, public transport can fall short. Renting a car gives you the freedom to cruise at your own pace, carry your personal belongings with ease — especially handy for families — and make the most of every stop along the way.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Milwaukee?

You’ll find plenty of rental car options on Turo to match your style, budget, and plans - from SUVs to compact cars to luxury vehicles and beyond.

Zipping around the city? Go for something compact like a Buick Encore, or opt for a hybrid like the BMW i3. Hitting the great outdoors? Strap your gear to the roof of a rugged Toyota 4Runner. Cruising lakeside? Drop the top in a sleek BMW 4 Series. And if you’re after serious style or muscle, there’s always a bold yellow Chevrolet Corvette or the powerhouse GMC Hummer. This is only a summary of the many rental car types available on Turo, so hit the search bar to find exactly what you're looking for.

Frequently asked questions

What documents and paperwork do you need to rent a car on Turo?

In the UK, you must be 21 years old or older and have held a UK or EU license for at least one year, or another driver’s license for at least two years. In France you must be 18 years old or older and have held a driver’s license for at least 2 years, longer for certain makes and models of vehicles.

When you’re booking your first trip, you’ll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver’s license and some other information. In most cases, you’ll get approved immediately, and you’ll be set for all future road trips, day trips, and business trips!

What kind of license do I need to rent a car on Turo?

Turo accepts valid licenses (not expired, suspended, or revoked) that allow for full driving privileges; this includes driver’s licenses issued outside of the US. Licenses that Turo doesn’t accept in the US include any that have expired, have been altered, are conditional, probational, provisional, or restricted. Learner’s permit/instruction permits are not accepted.

Do I need to be a certain age to rent a car on Turo?

To rent a car on Turo in the US, you must be 18 years old or older.

How does car rental insurance work on Turo?

You don’t need personal insurance coverage to rent a car on Turo.

In the US, any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your Turo protection plan. When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

See more about promotions & discounts

Is there unlimited mileage car rental on Turo?

Some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip; others set a daily distance limit — you’ll need to check on each rental car individually to see if this service is provided. On the vehicle pages, you’ll see the total miles or kilometres you’re allowed to drive under the heading “Distance included.” You can find cars offering unlimited mileage with every trip by using the “Unlimited distance” filter.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
