Another option is the Angeles Crest Highway, winding through the Angeles National Forest. For a more relaxed experience, explore the charming roads through the nearby San Antonio Heights, where you can enjoy views of lush landscapes and quaint neighborhoods. Navigating peak hour traffic in La Verne and its surroundings requires some strategic planning. Utilize traffic apps to stay informed about real-time conditions and alternative routes. Consider adjusting your travel times to avoid the busiest periods, typically between 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM on weekdays. When possible, use major thoroughfares like Foothill Boulevard or Arrow Highway, which often move more efficiently than smaller streets during rush hour. If you're heading towards Los Angeles, be prepared for heavier congestion on the 210 and 10 freeways. Opting for an economy rental car with good fuel efficiency can be advantageous in stop-and-go traffic. Remember to keep a cool head and allow extra time for your journey during these busy periods.
Downtown La Verne offers several convenient parking options for visitors. The city provides free public parking lots scattered throughout the downtown area, particularly near D Street and Third Street. These lots are ideal for those exploring local shops and restaurants. For exploring La Verne and the nearby mountains, a versatile vehicle is recommended. An SUV or crossover can be an excellent choice, offering a good balance of comfort for city driving and capability for mountain roads. These vehicles provide higher ground clearance, which can be beneficial on some of the more rugged mountain paths. If you're planning mostly city exploration with occasional mountain trips, a mid-size rental car might suffice, offering good fuel economy and easy maneuverability in urban areas. For those focusing more on mountain adventures, consider a vehicle with all-wheel drive for better traction on winding mountain roads. Whatever your choice, ensure your rental car is equipped with air conditioning for comfort during La Verne's warm seasons.

However, if you plan to venture further into the greater Los Angeles area, you may encounter some toll roads. The closest toll road to La Verne is the 91 Express Lanes, located to the south in Orange County. If your travels take you towards Irvine or southern Orange County, you might also encounter toll roads like the 73, 133, 241, and 261. When using your rental car, it's advisable to carry some cash or a credit card for unexpected toll charges. Many of these toll roads also offer electronic payment options, so check with your car rental provider about their policies for toll road usage to avoid any additional fees.
When driving in unfamiliar areas of La Verne, safety should be your top priority. Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and signs before setting out in your rental car. Use a reliable GPS or navigation app to help you navigate, but always pay attention to your surroundings rather than solely relying on technology. Be extra cautious at intersections, as some may have unique traffic patterns. When driving in residential areas, be aware of lower speed limits and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. If you're venturing into the nearby mountains, drive slowly on winding roads and be prepared for changes in weather conditions. Always keep your headlights on during foggy conditions, which can occur in the early mornings or evenings. Lastly, ensure your rental car is in good condition before embarking on any trip in La Verne.

Pack essentials like water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. For longer trips, consider scheduling regular breaks to stay alert and refreshed. If your journey includes desert areas, ensure your vehicle's air conditioning is functioning well. Remember to keep your gas tank at least half full, as gas stations can be sparse in some rural areas. Lastly, inform someone of your travel plans and expected arrival time for added safety.
La Verne and its surrounding areas offer numerous reliable gas stations to keep your rental car fueled up. Along Foothill Boulevard, you'll find several well-known chain stations that are conveniently located and often open 24/7. The intersection of Foothill and Wheeler Avenue is a popular spot for refueling.
