Honestly, one of the best car rental experiences I’ve had in Hawaii! Gabriel was great to rent from. I’ve rented cars here before, and they would often be full of sand, have curb rash, or show a lot of wear and tear. This car, however, was in beautiful condition—clean, well-maintained, and clearly taken care of. I’m honestly surprised it’s still in such great shape considering how often rental cars get used. The whole experience was smooth and easy. I would definitely rent from Gabriel again and highly recommend him!

Great experience overall! The Corolla was clean, reliable, great on gas, and honestly perfect for getting around Hawaii. I had no issues with the car during my trip, and it made getting around the island easy and stress-free. The host was also responsive and made the whole pickup and rental process smooth. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for a dependable car while visiting Hawaii, and I’d rent again!

Lexus LC 2022

The host and the car were great! We really enjoyed the top down experience on the island and cruising around in the big Lexus. Cong was great about working with our schedule to drop off and pick up the car at our hotel in Waikiki after we figured out our luggage would not fit for a trip back to the airport. However, I wouldn't rent this car again. With all the speed bumps, extremely slow speed limits and rough roads, this isn't the best car to explore the island in. The car also has a tracking system in it, so if you attempt to use any of this cars fantastic performance capabilities, you get a nagging message from the host about it. I'd rent from Cong again, but I'd get a Land Cruiser instead, as its much better suited to the driving environment of Oahu.

Jerry was awesome! His little fiat was perfect for getting around Waikiki. He got us the car soooo fast after booking… literally within the hour. He was flexible with return times too which made us feel less stressed. He has lots of tips for visiting the island and made us feel welcomed by a local. Good guy! We’d happily rent a car from him again.

Toyota Corolla 2020

It is convenient that the rental and return processes take place entirely at the Royal Hawaiian Center parking garage. The very reasonable price was a definite plus. However, I would have liked to see more care taken with vehicle cleaning and maintenance. It was disappointing that the windshield washer fluid was empty and the interior and exterior hadn't been cleaned, but overall, I think I was able to enjoy a comfortable sightseeing trip.

Excellent Trip: Returning customer: 3rd time using this vehicle, host and supplier. All went very smooth. The communication was great from day one. The airport pick-up was well managed and the parked vehicle easy to locate, Vehicle was delivered on time and care free. The car itself was in overall great condition. All systems (navigation, Convertable top, lighting, displays and mechanics of The car) was excellent. The weather was good, therefore we were able to travel with the Convertable top lowered almost 24/7. Returning the vehicle, I errored and entered the wrong garage (my fault). I contacted the host, received an immediately response and without hesitation notified me, the lot I was in, would be more than accessible, take good pics so vehicle could be picked up and my normal airport (time) stressors were avoided - THANK YOU … The experience was excellent. We are fortunate and have the ability to visit Hawaii annually. We will continue to use this vehicle type and host in the future. Thank you (once again) for doing your part and making this trip memorable.

Nissan Versa 2011

We rented Yuhei's 2011 Nissan Versa for what I can best describe as our family's 36-hour Amazing Race around Oʻahu, and it turned out to be almost exactly the right car for what we wanted to accomplish. I'm the kind of person who likes to know the practical details before renting a vehicle, so here's the review I would have appreciated reading beforehand. First, set your expectations correctly: this is a 2011 four-cylinder economy car, not a new SUV or sports car. We had four adults in it, including my wife and my parents, and with four people aboard you're not going to race up the mountains or mash the accelerator and effortlessly pass somebody on the freeway. But if what you need is an inexpensive, simple car that will reliably get four people all over Oʻahu, this little Versa did exactly that for us. And we really did put it to the test. In roughly 36 hours, we drove about 170 miles and squeezed an amazing amount of the island into those miles. We went from Honolulu up through the center of the island to the North Shore, explored Haleʻiwa, stopped at the North Shore food trucks, saw places like Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Sunset Beach, then continued around the Windward side of the island past the beautiful mountains and Kualoa Ranch. We drove the coastal roads, stopped at overlooks and beaches, crossed the island through the mountains, visited the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout, and made our way back into Honolulu. On day two we headed out along the southeastern side of Oʻahu and had a fantastic morning snorkeling at Kaiona Beach, then worked our way back toward Honolulu through the Makapuʻu/Hālona/Koko Head/Diamond Head area. We also had some fun hunting down Hawaii Five-0 filming locations, including the Kamekona shrimp-truck location near Kahanamoku Lagoon and the King Kamehameha statue and Five-0 headquarters locations downtown. We even managed to fit in some traditional Hawaiian food before returning the car. So when I say this Versa will get you around the island, we gave it a pretty good test. :-) Fuel economy: We drove approximately 170 miles and were down to roughly 1/4 tank when we refueled. It took almost exactly 9 gallons, which works out to about 18.9 MPG for our trip. Keep in mind that wasn't an MPG test under ideal conditions: it was four adults, Honolulu traffic, temps in the 90's... A/C Running, mountain roads, coastal sightseeing, repeated stops and starts, parking lots, overlooks, and plenty of accelerating back onto the highway. Your mileage with two people and more conventional driving could obviously be different. One thing I particularly liked was the size of the car. A compact Versa makes a lot of sense on Oʻahu. Parking spaces can be small, some roads are tight, and you're constantly pulling into little beach parks, overlooks and crowded Honolulu parking areas. I NEVER found myself wishing we'd rented something much larger. The car is also equipped with an aftermarket touchscreen stereo with Bluetooth, so we were able to connect a phone for music/audio during our drive. This was ESSENTIAL for getting around unfamiliar roads... to have our android auto connection maps up on the screen. Has both USB A and USB C inputs and once connected via wire, the BlueTooth took over every time we got in the car. It struggled to charge my older big pixel XL fold so bring a battery bank just in case. Again, this is a 2011 economy car, so rent it with realistic expectations. It isn't a luxury car, and with four adults aboard you will notice that little four-cylinder working on hills and harder acceleration... and my mom said she felt every "speed table" in the back seat (and there are lots of them around the island). We weren't renting a car to impress anybody... we wanted something economical and practical that could become our transportation for a crazy two-day family adventure around Oʻahu. For that purpose, it was perfect. (Remember taxes and $12 a day insurance are not included... added $40 to $50 to the 2 day $77 rental bill, which is probably why Turo gives you an hour to change your mind when you first book) Pickup and return were straightforward, communication with Yuhei and Kaori was excellent, and they were responsive throughout the rental. We returned it to the same location, filled it with fuel, uploaded our checkout photos and receipt, and were on our way. We came to Oʻahu on a cruise ship with a very limited amount of time and essentially used this little Versa to create our own two-day private island tour. In about 170 miles and 36 hours, it helped four of us see considerably more of Oʻahu than we ever could have seen relying on organized excursions. If we had more time, we might have opted into the adventure packages with the Jurassic park tours, or a trip into the diamond head crater... but guess passes must be arranged 30 days in advance, cost extra, and are timed entry. Five stars from us. Mahalo, Yuhei and Kaori!

Ford C-Max Energi 2017

Host directions were very detailed but clear. Near to our hotel. Host was extremely helpful and prompt with replies. Car was quite dirty upon pickup but I realize that’s the nature of this type of rental as well as the prior rental, so I don’t fault the owner and didn’t rate based on that. It was an easy and pleasant transaction and cheaper than Ubering.

Toyota Camry 2023

This was a last minute rental as the prior rental was wrecked the morning of our trip and we were notified that morning that they had to cancel the reservation. We got lucky that we were able to find this car the same day we were arriving in Hawaii. Car was clean, communications were excellent, and the price was reasonable. Couldn’t ask for a smoother transaction. Much appreciated and will definitely rent again!!!

Who is monthly car rental in Honolulu for?

Just relocated to Honolulu

Military families arriving on PCS orders to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Schofield Barracks, or Marine Corps Base Hawaii often wait 30 to 90 days for a vehicle shipment from the mainland. A long term car rental in Honolulu bridges that gap immediately — no loan application, no insurance shopping, no registration paperwork. New employees starting civilian jobs can do the same: drive from day one while they figure out the commute, the neighborhoods, and whether buying even makes sense.

Your lease just ended — or you just sold your car

Honolulu's vehicle market is expensive, and rushing into a purchase here can mean overpaying. A monthly rental gives you breathing room to research, test different vehicle types — sedan versus SUV versus EV — and decide on your own timeline. It's a practical car ownership alternative that keeps you moving without the dealer pressure or depreciation clock.

Extended work assignment or traveling professional

Travel nurses on 13-week assignments at Queen's Medical Center, Kapiolani, or Tripler Army Medical Center need reliable transportation from their first shift to their last. Contractors, remote workers, and consultants on multi-month Oahu projects face the same challenge. An extended car rental in Honolulu through Turo costs less per day than short-term alternatives, and you pick the exact car that fits your commute.

Post-college or first car

UH Manoa graduates stepping into their first Honolulu jobs often have tight budgets and uncertain plans. Monthly rental removes the biggest financial barriers — no down payment, no credit check, no loan — and lets you drive what you can afford while you figure out whether you're staying on Oahu long-term.

Pickup locations for monthly car rental in Honolulu

Purple squiggle

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)

Turo holds an airport delivery permit at HNL, so you can pick up your car right on airport grounds. The designated meeting point is the International Parking Garage, Levels 7 and 8, across from Terminal 1 on the Arrivals level. A $14 parking fee applies and is included in your total price. Coordinate pickup timing directly through the Turo app — everything is handled digitally, with no shuttle and no rental counter.

Kapolei

Oahu's "Second City" sits about 20 miles west of downtown Honolulu and is one of the island's fastest-growing areas. Newer housing developments, Ka Makana Ali'i shopping center, and government offices have drawn military families and young professionals priced out of central Honolulu. If you're settling on the west side, picking up a car from a Kapolei-area listing saves you the H-1 commute into town on your very first day.

Kailua

On Oahu's windward side, Kailua offers a laid-back beach-town lifestyle with a walkable center, local restaurants, and easy access to Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach. It's a popular landing spot for families stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay, remote workers, and long-term renters drawn to the quality of life. A car is still essential for commuting to Honolulu or the base, and picking up locally means you skip the drive over the Pali or through the H-3 tunnel.

Top tips for monthly car rental in Honolulu

Honolulu rewards renters who plan ahead. Here's what to know before you book a monthly rental on Oahu.

Finding the best monthly rental deal in Honolulu

Filter your search by trip length and sort by monthly rate — 30-day-plus bookings unlock the lowest per-day pricing on Turo. Booking in advance gives you the widest selection, and listings with weekly or 14-day discounts stack additional savings on top of the monthly rate. Explore car rental in Hawaii to compare options across the islands.

How to pick a car for a monthly rental in Honolulu

For daily commuting on H-1, a fuel-efficient sedan or compact keeps costs low and parking simple. Families or renters hauling gear from base housing will appreciate SUV rentals in Honolulu. With gas prices in Hawaii among the highest in the US, an EV or hybrid can cut your monthly fuel bill significantly — and Oahu's charging network is growing.

Road rules and driving conditions in Honolulu

H-1 is Oahu's only east-west freeway, connecting Kapolei, Pearl City, and downtown Honolulu — and it's congested during weekday rush hours, roughly 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM. H-2 runs north toward the central plateau, and H-3 connects the Pearl Harbor area to the windward side. Posted speed limits are lower than you might expect coming from the mainland — surface streets and residential areas top out well below highway speeds, and even freeways have lower maximums than most US interstates. Pedestrian right-of-way laws are strict — always yield at crosswalks.

Parking in Honolulu

Downtown metered street parking fills up fast, but garages near the state capitol and Ala Moana Center offer reliable alternatives. Ala Moana's large parking structure is free and doubles as a practical hub for errands. In residential neighborhoods — especially older areas like Kaimuki or Manoa — street parking can be tight, so confirm arrangements with your landlord or property manager before settling in.

Toll roads in Honolulu

There are no toll roads on Oahu. H-1, H-2, H-3, and every other major route are completely free to drive, so you won't need a transponder or toll pass.

Gas stations and EV charging in Honolulu

Shell and Chevron stations line S King Street, Nimitz Highway, and major roads across Oahu — you won't have trouble finding fuel. That said, Hawaii gas prices frequently top $5 per gallon, so budgeting for fuel matters. Public EV chargers are available at Ala Moana Center, several hotel parking facilities, and along S Beretania Street. ChargePoint and Blink are the most common networks on the island.

Types of cars available for monthly rental in Honolulu

You'll find reliable sedans, fuel-efficient compacts, family-friendly SUVs, and crossovers from makers like Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia — the everyday vehicles that make the most sense for a monthly commitment. Filter by price, features, or vehicle type to match the car to your commute, your family size, or your budget.

Picking a monthly car rental in Honolulu that fits your budget

Whether you want to rent a car for a month in Honolulu or stay for several months, rentals on Turo get cheaper the longer you book. Trips of 30 days or more unlock the deepest discounts, and many listings also offer reduced rates for seven-day and 14-day bookings. About 60% of available monthly supply in Honolulu is priced under $800 per month, with a median around $1,300 per month. You'll see the total price before you book — no hidden fees, no surprise charges at the end.

Can other people drive the car I rented in Honolulu?

Yes, but they need to be added as an approved driver on your Turo trip. You can add additional drivers through the Turo app before or during your rental in Honolulu. Each additional driver must meet Turo's eligibility requirements and have a valid driver's license.

Is monthly car rental on Turo cheaper than leasing a car?

It depends on your situation, but for many people in Honolulu, monthly rental comes out ahead. Leasing typically requires a credit check, a down payment, and a 24- to 36-month commitment — plus mileage penalties if you go over. Turo has no credit check, no down payment, and no long-term contract. You see the full price before you book, and you can end or extend whenever your plans change.
