Pickup near or at Airports
Waterbury can be a nice place to drive, especially if you visit in fall to take in the beautiful foliage, or cruise through the downtown area where the buildings are historic and eye-catching. To ensure your trip is a seamless and safe one, consider these tips for driving in Waterbury, CT.
As well as all the common road rules – driving on the right-hand side of the road, wearing a seatbelt at all times, obeying road signage, and adhering to speed limits – there are a few unique laws to be aware of in Connecticut. For example, you can't make a left-hand turn at a red light like you can in many states You may only use the left lanes on a road for passing – it's illegal to cruise or stay in these lanes unless overtaking.
Connecticut has enacted the 'Move Over Law' requiring drivers to slow down or change lanes when they encounter a stationary emergency or utility vehicle pulled over with its lights flashing. A similar rule applies for school buses – if you see a stationary school bus with its lights flashing, you must stop for it, regardless of which side of the road it's on.
Speed limits in Waterbury are pretty standard, starting with its default limit of 30 miles per hour (mph) in urban areas like downtown. This climbs to 35 mph on unpaved roads, 45 to 50 mph on undivided rural roads, 45 to 55 on city freeways, 50 to 55 mph on divided rural roads, and 65 mph on rural freeways. The speed limit in a school zone in Waterbury is 20 mph.
Something important to note about Waterbury is that traffic can build up very easily here. All the major highways in the Connecticut area run through or adjacent to Waterbury, which can cause significant jams during peak commute times or on weekends and holidays. The I-84 is particularly notorious for its traffic, although Connecticut's smaller population ensures that nothing ever reaches New York City gridlock levels. If you're on a time crunch, be sure to use a navigation app to check traffic conditions before you depart in your rental car.
Connecticut gets very cold, snowy winters, so exercise caution when driving during this time of year. Be sure to de-ice your windshield and windows before getting out on the roads, and use snow tires or chains if the road conditions demand it. You can use Turo's filters to easily find cars that are already equipped with snow tires.
Parking in downtown Waterbury, CT is generally very easy – in fact, the city has made sure of it! Within the city center, you'll find over 4,000 parking spaces across metered street parking, garages, and parking lots. If you're just leaving your car for a short time, pick from one of 650 on-street metered parking spaces. Or, if you're headed into downtown for longer or like the extra security, opt for a parking garage. The Buckingham Garage (210 Bank St) is the biggest, with 1,400 spaces, but there's also the Courtyard by Marriott Garage (63 Grand St) and the Scovill Street Garage (33 Scovill St), each of which offers a convenient place to park while you explore the city.
Not only are there zero toll roads in Waterbury, CT, but there are also none in the entire state of Connecticut. The last toll booth was removed in 1989, and the state has no plans to reinstate tolls in a bid to keep the area accessible and equitable for drivers. However, keep in mind that Connecticut is quite a small state geographically – so if you have plans of traveling to nearby New York, Rhode Island, or Maryland, you may encounter tolls on your journey to and from.
There are tons of options for both gas stations and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Waterbury area. If you're driving a fuel-based car in Waterbury, CT, choose from a handful of convenient options in the city center, including the Exxon at 474 Bank St and the Waterbury Gulf at 21 Union St. As you leave downtown and head into the suburbs of Waterbury, you'll find more gas stations dotted along major roads like I-84, James H Darcey Memorial Hwy, Main St, and Prospect Rd.
Electric vehicle registrations are climbing in Connecticut, so it's no wonder Waterbury's infrastructure is expanding to accommodate all the new cars in the area. For an easy EV charging station in the city center, try the chargers at Brass Mill Center, the Blink at 145 Bank St, or the AmpUp at the Mattatuck Museum. Just like gas stations, EV chargers are still easy to find in the Waterbury suburbs – stick to major roads or, when in doubt, head to a local mall like Waterbury Plaza to juice up.
While it's pretty easy to get from Waterbury to big cities like Boston or New York City on public transit – the area has a great rail network – we still recommend renting a car while you're here. Most people live outside of the downtown area, and local bus services are limited, so getting from your accommodation to the train usually requires your own set of wheels. With a rental car from the Turo marketplace, you'll have the freedom to explore the area at your own pace, including neighboring cities in Connecticut like New Haven, Hartford, Stamford, and Bridgeport.
