This was the best car I have ever rented. I will definitely refer everybody. I know that needs to rent a car to Turo. They were very welcoming. I even had an incident where I accidentally broke the lockbox and they were very accepting of it and didn’t really make a big deal of it. I just had to replace the lock box and everything was great. I will definitely be renting from them again.

Top tips for renting a car in New Port Richey

Obtaining a car rental in New Port Richey takes you beyond Pasco County's standard attractions. The Gulf Coast stretches in both directions, linking you to everything from Tarpon Springs' historic sponge docks to Crystal River's manatee encounters. Orlando's theme parks make for a perfect day trip destination, too. Personal transportation gives you access to numerous options.

Excited to experience everything the Nature Coast has to offer? Check out these local insights to get the most from visiting New Port Richey.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in New Port Richey?

The city has well-kept roads, and traffic moves steadily, except during seasonal tourist peaks in the summer. Speed limits hover around 30 mph in town, while Florida highways typically run 55-70 mph.

When Pasco-Hernando State College hosts events or downtown festivals draw crowds, expect heavier and slower traffic around campus and popular spots like the Historic Hacienda Hotel. Look out for pedestrians, too.

Summer brings daily afternoon thunderstorms that create slick roads and reduced visibility. Do as locals do: pull over when storms hit hardest. New Port Richey is also known to get hurricanes, so there is a risk in the summer and fall. Pay attention to daily weather reports and listen to locals talking about upcoming weather risks.

What is parking like in New Port Richey?

Downtown New Port Richey provides several complementary parking areas, including a recent parking garage addition. The Gloria Swanson Parking Lot also offers ample free spaces right in the heart of downtown. Most attractions are within comfortable walking distance of the Historic Hacienda Hotel, local galleries, and waterfront dining. For longer visits, Sims Park offers convenient parking that works well for riverfront activities or extended downtown visits.

Are there toll roads in New Port Richey?

Most routes around New Port Richey are toll-free, including the main US Highway 19 corridor that runs through the city. However, venturing toward Tampa or Orlando introduces you to Florida's extensive toll road network. If you're heading south toward Tampa International Airport or exploring the greater Tampa Bay area, expect tolls on Interstate 75's express lanes and Florida's Turnpike system. SunPass transponders provide the lowest rates and work across Florida's toll network.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in New Port Richey?

Downtown New Port Richey, the Highway 19 corridor, and campus-adjacent areas all feature gas stations with major brands and extended hours. Before venturing into more remote Nature Coast destinations or rural parts of Pasco County, remember that fuel stops become sparser and often carry higher prices. Topping off the tank is a good idea.

Electric vehicle drivers will find charging infrastructure throughout the region. New Port Richey has public charging stations within the city limits, with a mix of Level 2 and Level 3 options. The broader Tampa Bay area provides extensive EV infrastructure, too. For longer trips into rural Florida, however, range planning becomes important because charging stations are still relatively few in those regions.

Do I need to rent a car in New Port Richey?

The colleges, downtown, and the waterfront district have comfortable walking distances to most locations. GoPasco bus routes reasonably cover much of the city and the surrounding county. The local DART service operates with limited coverage, primarily focusing on downtown areas.

If you're planning to fully experience the Nature Coast or attractions like James E. Grey Preserve and Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, walking and transit aren't reasonable options. You will definitely need your own car rental to access these more scattered attractions. The further up or down the Gulf Coast you want to go, the more a rental car pays off in opportunity, flexibility, and access.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
