I had an excellent experience with both my Turo host and Turo customer service during an extremely difficult personal emergency. The host was professional, understanding, compassionate, and maintained great communication throughout the rental. The vehicle was clean, reliable, and exactly as described. Turo customer service was also very responsive, patient, and supportive while assisting me through an unexpected domestic violence emergency situation. Their understanding and willingness to work with me during such a stressful time truly meant a lot. I sincerely appreciate the kindness, professionalism, and outstanding customer care shown to me. Thank you both for making a very hard situation a little easier.

Sorry, I skipped the Photos. However, the vehicle is clean. Everything is good. I filled it up with gas. I cleaned the interior with my HEPA vacuum. I own a mitigation cleaning company. The only thing that’s probably dirty. Is the floor mat? And maybe the bugs on the front of the car I tried to wash it off as much as possible however this season of love bugs is crazy. I really enjoyed your vehicle vehicles. Thank you. Have a great day, sir.

Rent a car and explore Gainesville, FL

Things to do and places to see in Gainesville, FL

Gainesville is a city that runs on Gator pride, natural springs, and a creative energy that spills out of every downtown block. Catch a football game at The Swamp, wander the Butterfly Rainforest at the Florida Museum, or reserve a morning to search the trails at Sweetwater Wetlands Park, where wading birds and alligators share the boardwalk. A rental car makes it easy to visit everything from the springs to the raceway in a single trip.

Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park, Gainesville, FL

Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park

A 120-foot-deep sinkhole with its own miniature rainforest is located just a short drive northwest of the city center. Walk the 232 steps down to the bottom, where small waterfalls trickle through lush ferns and the temperature drops noticeably. The park is a local favorite and one of the most unique geological sites in Florida. Pick up your rental vehicle and you'll be there in roughly fifteen minutes.

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park

Wild bison and free-roaming horses graze across a 21,000-acre prairie that sits just south of the city on Main St heading toward Micanopy. The La Chua Trail offers some of the best wildlife viewing in the state, with alligators, sandhill cranes, and raptors all within a short walk from the trailhead. It's the kind of park that makes you forget you're in a college town, and it's only accessible by car.

Gainesville Raceway

The roar of a Top Fuel dragster is something you feel in your chest before you hear it. Gainesville Raceway is located just northeast of town and hosts the annual Gatornationals, one of the premier events on the NHRA circuit. Even outside race weekends, the facility runs test-and-tune sessions and local events that draw gearheads from across Florida.

Top tips for renting a car in Gainesville

Gainesville, FL, sits at the crossroads of springs country, Gator nation, and some of North Central Florida's best driving roads. A few local pointers go a long way in a college town, so you can rent with confidence and spend more time on the road than working out logistics.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Gainesville?

Speed limits across Gainesville's city center streets generally sit at 30 mph, rising to 45 mph on major corridors like University Avenue and Archer Road. I-75 runs north-south through town at 70 mph and connects to Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa. Florida law requires all occupants to wear seatbelts, handheld phone use is banned in school and construction zones, and right turns on red are permitted unless posted otherwise.

Traffic in Gainesville is fair by Florida standards most of the year, but things shift dramatically around the University of Florida calendar. Gator football Saturdays send the city center into gridlock, especially along University Avenue and the streets surrounding the stadium. Weekday rush hours build between 7:30 and 9:00 am and again from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, particularly along Archer Road near the I-75 interchange.

Summer afternoon thunderstorms roll through fast between June and September, reducing visibility and flooding low-lying roads within minutes. Keep headlights on in the rain, leave extra space, and check FL511 for conditions before longer drives.

What is parking like in Gainesville?

Downtown Gainesville has a city-operated parking garage at 105 SW 3rd Street with easy access to the main dining and entertainment district. Metered street parking runs along University Avenue and through the downtown area, and the SE 1st Avenue lot is another popular option near the city center. Around the UF campus, parking is tighter and permit-controlled during the semester, so plan ahead.

On Gator game days, parking near the stadium fills hours before kickoff, and you may pay a premium for anything within walking distance. Arriving early or parking further out is the smartest move. Outside campus events, parking across the rest of the city is generally straightforward.

Are there toll roads in Gainesville?

There are no toll roads in the Gainesville area. I-75 and all local roads around Gainesville Regional Airport are free to drive. Florida's Turnpike operates further south, so you may encounter tolls heading toward Orlando or Tampa, but nothing near the airport or center of the city.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Gainesville?

Gas stations are well spread across the city, with Shell, BP, Chevron, and RaceTrac locations along Archer Road, Waldo Road, and near the I-75 interchanges. Topping off before a drive to the springs or the coast is a smart idea. Prices in Gainesville tend to sit at or below the Florida average.

If you rent an EV, Gainesville has a surprisingly strong charging network for a city of its size. Dozens of public stations are spread across town, including Electrify America fast chargers on Archer Road, ChargePoint stations at the UF campus and Norman Garage, and additional spots at shopping centers. Sedans and EVs alike handle Gainesville's flat, well-maintained roads comfortably.

Do I need to rent a car in Gainesville?

Gainesville's Regional Transit System covers the basics around campus, but the real magic of North Central Florida sits beyond the bus lines. Ichetucknee Springs, Ginnie Springs, Devil's Millhopper, Paynes Prairie, Cedar Key's Gulf Coast charm, and the 90-minute drive to St. Augustine all need a car to reach. Gainesville Regional Airport is small and easy to navigate, and Turo lets you pick up at any location that suits your plans, with prices and vehicles matched to the trip ahead. Pay for only what you need.

When booking a car in the US, you’ll choose between three protection plans — Premier (eligibility requirements apply), Standard, or Minimum — to get the level of protection that’s right for you. On each trip, you’re covered with third-party automobile liability insurance provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company.*

In New York state, you’ll also choose between Premier (if available), Standard, or Minimum. With each plan, you’re covered with liability insurance of $1,250,000.* Protection plans for New York trips also include access to roadside assistance, priority phone support, and 24/7 customer assistance.

Can other people drive the car that I rented?

Yes, multiple guests can drive the car you rent on Turo, as long as they are all approved to drive. The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

* Any personal insurance you may have that covers damage to the host’s vehicle would kick in before your protection plan, except in limited situations for trips booked in Maryland, but this protects your own wallet. In the US, liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. The policy does not provide coverage for damage to a host’s vehicle.

For questions or information about the third party liability insurance that is included in protection plans, consumers in Maryland and the licensed states listed here may contact Turo Insurance Agency at (415) 508-0283 or claims@turo.agency.
