Picking up at MRY

Purple squiggle

Pickup & return areas at MRY

Pickups and returns at Monterey Regional Airport are only allowed in the Upper Short Term and Long Term lots. Follow airport signs to the permitted airport locations and check the Turo app for the exact stall and section. To return your vehicle, pull in and park at MRY no earlier than four hours before trip end or within posted limits (whichever comes first). Pull a ticket at entry, leave it in the car (avoid wheelchair-accessible or reserved stalls) and message your host the precise section and parking stall.

Communicate with your host

Booking an airport car rental on Turo means you can easily communicate with your host using Turo's in-app messaging. In the app, you'll also find all the details for your reservation, including exact pickup and return locations. If anything comes up, just send your host a note right from your phone.

Parking & airport fees

MRY requires Turo to collect and remit to the airport a fee that allows your host to deliver a vehicle there. Turo doesn't set this fee, mark it up, or retain any portion of it. If your host requires you to cover the cost of a parking fee to enter or exit at an airport parking location, Turo requires them to disclose that information in their vehicle listing.

Monterey car rentals for any occasion

Take on whatever you have planned in Monterey with the perfect rental car. On Turo, you'll discover the right car for any occasion, including:

purple lines

Coastal weekends & date-days

Sea otters, boardwalks, and the kind of chowder that demands a second spoon. A Nissan Sentra or other small-sized cars make parking near Fisherman’s Wharf simpler; a Ford Fusion Hybrid stretches miles between scenic pullouts.

Conferences, coursework & on-orders travel

Visiting NPS, attending a conference, or in for meetings? Lock in a car rental in Monterey for multiple days or even weeks. Many Turo hosts offer discounts for longer-term bookings of one month or more, making long term bookings the perfect way to save and score the best car rental deals in Monterey.

Style moments & scenic flexes

Anniversary dinner at Pebble Beach, detour up Skyline, or just because the light is perfect — the Chevrolet Corvette brings the drama. Prefer quiet charisma? An electric luxury sedan or premium luxury suv glides through town with style. Limo van? Different vibe, different day.

Things to do and places to see in Monterey, CA

Sea otters, fog-fringed cliffs, and chowder you’ll talk about later — Monterey’s greatest hits are close and stunning.

Monterey Bay, CA

Monterey Bay Aquarium

An icon for a reason. Watch the kelp forest sway, then step outside for ocean air and a wander down Cannery Row. It’s just a few miles from MRY, so compact-sized cars or a Nissan Sentra make parking painless; if you’re toting strollers or extra jackets, a roomier car type like a full size luxury sedan will feel right at home.

Fisherman’s Wharf & Old Monterey

Saltwater taffy, harbor seals, and sunset strolls meet adobe history and lively patios. Park once and linger — your road trip should include time for chowder sampling and people-watching. Follow posted signs and arrive early; weekends fill quickly.

17-Mile Drive (Pebble Beach)

Roll through cypress tunnels and postcard pullouts. A Ford Fusion Hybrid sips fuel along the stops, while a Chevrolet Corvette adds a little performance sport drama to the coastline. Respect turnouts, mind engine exhaust noise near neighborhoods, and bring a camera. The light is incredible around golden hour.

Top tips for renting a car in Monterey

New town, new rhythm — and Monterey’s is mellow. This section is your “don’t overthink it” guide to car rental Monterey Regional Airport logistics: where to pick up in the rental car area, how to return without laps, and what to expect on streets that prefer patience to pedal-mashing.

How does airport pickup work at Monterey Regional Airport?

From baggage claim, follow the airport signs for Upper Short Term or Long Term — those are the only approved pickup zones for airport MRY car rental on Turo. Your app will show the specific rental location (row/stall). Message your host if you need the pin-drop, complete photo check-in, and use the ticket left in the car to exit. No shuttle, no rate code — just “find, photo, go.”

How does drop-off work at Monterey Regional Airport?

Aim for Upper Short Term or Long Term, pull a ticket at entry, and park legally (never in reserved or accessible stalls). You can’t return earlier than four hours before your scheduled end unless the posted limits say otherwise. Leave the ticket in the vehicle rented, take your checkout photos, and send your host the section/stall so pickup is painless.

How far is Monterey Regional Airport from Downtown Monterey?

If you're heading to Monterey and looking for a car rental, Monterey Peninsula Airport is an ideal pick-up spot. MRY is close to the region's hot spots — just a few miles to Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row. This will typically take 10–15 minutes, depending on lights, traffic, and the occasional scenic detour. This is why folks rent a car at Monterey Regional Airport: you’re cruising the waterfront while others are still refreshing rideshare ETAs.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Monterey?

City streets run 25–35 mph, and coastal corridors reward unhurried driving — pull out for faster traffic, wave thanks, and enjoy the view along Highway 1. California requires hands-free phone use, so mount your device before you set off. Always carry a valid driver’s license, and double-check minimum age and ID requirements in the Turo app before your trip. If you're active duty military personnel — keep your docs handy and your route set.

What is parking like in Monterey?

Near the Wharf and Aquarium, garages and lots fill fastest on weekends so early arrivals win. Residential blocks around the waterfront are posted — be sure to read carefully. Compact passenger vehicles slide into tighter spots, while larger cars may be easier to park in a lot or garage. When in doubt, one street inland is your best bet.

Are there toll roads in Monterey?

Not in the immediate area. If you’re stretching north toward San Francisco or across the Bay, your route may include tolled bridges — check maps before you rent a car and plan your rental period accordingly. Highway 1 itself? Toll-free and unforgettable.

Where can I find gas stations and EV chargers in Monterey?

Fuel clusters along Fremont and Munras; chargers pop up in newer garages, shopping centers, and hotel lots. If you chose an electric sedan, an electric luxury SUV, or something sportier like a Tesla Model 3, give yourself a few extra minutes to top off the night before your rental car return. Sunrise on the bay pairs nicely with a full battery.

Do I need to rent a car in Monterey?

If your plan is Wharf → Aquarium → dinner on Alvarado, you can stitch it together without a car — slowly. But the magic lives between stops: Pacific Grove sunsets, Carmel beaches, a spur to Big Sur. With car rental, you keep the spontaneity up and the windows down.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Monterey?

From city-smart compacts to coastal cruisers, you’ll find a wide range of rental cars available on Turo including compact and midsize cars, full size luxury SUVs, spacious sedans and even exotic vehicles. A few local favorites at MRY include Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Sentra, Tesla Model 3, and Chevrolet Corvette.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Monterey?

The cost of car rental in Monterey can vary depending on type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Monterey, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.

The primary driver (whoever rented the car) can add additional drivers with no fees or additional charges. Only the primary driver can request to add drivers; Turo hosts cannot do it for you. We encourage you to request to add additional drivers before your trip starts, though guests can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and meet the age requirements for the car you’ve booked. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.
