Step off the plane and onto island time — no car rental counter required. On Turo, car rental at Lihue Airport means skipping the crowds and catching a quick, breezy shuttle to the dedicated pickup lot at the Kukui Grove Center, where your car will be ready and waiting. No paperwork, no wasting time — just the car of your choice, and the open road ahead. From canyon drives to coastline cruising, a rental car unlocks the best of Kauai's wild beauty. Cruise west to the sweeping overlooks of Waimea Canyon, meander north through the lush Wailua River, or head south to Poipu for golden beaches and sea turtle sightings. With your own set of wheels, it's easy to stop for waterfall photo ops, swing by a roadside fruit stand, or chase the sunset from one scenic lookout to the next. On this island, spontaneity is part of the plan — and having the right car makes it effortless.

Everything about this trip and this car rental was amazing. It was very easy to pick up the car. The car was very clean and have a full tank of gas. I would absolutely rent a car with turtle again.

Turo shuttle was quick and convenient from picking up to dropping off car. Car rental personnel were easy to communicate with and car was in great shape and treated us well! Will rent again!

Great car, a few small things that the host immediately informed that he was taking care of after my reservation. Amazing communication and some great recommendations for places to go!

Melvin was above and beyond as a host, I highly recommend renting a car from him and his family. There was an issue with a tire, and he went out of his way to address the issue and make sure that our vacation wasn’t disrupted. I couldn’t have asked for more, thank you, Melvin. The car itself was great, drove well, clean on pickup, comfortable, well priced. When coming back to Kauai I will look to rent a car from Melvin again.
David was an excellent host! The car was exactly what we needed for our family of three to comfortably explore the beautiful island. It was clean, reliable, and made getting around Kauai easy and stress-free. David was very helpful, responsive, and great to communicate with throughout the trip. We would absolutely rent from him again and highly recommend him to anyone visiting the island. Mahalo, David!
Last minute reservation because our other one was for the wrong date and the company didn’t have other cars! We were SO grateful that this was available. It rescued our vacation. The car has definitely had plenty of wear

It was the best car rental experience I ever had on Turo so far! Brent was so friendly and helpful with lots of local recommendations. Rental direction was very straightforward and easy to navigate. Car condition was great! Perfect for small group. We’ll definitely book again with Brent when we come back to Kauai.
Car was in great condition, rental process went smoothly and host was responsive and helpful!

Rental was a great experience. Clean reliable car, perfect price point vs Hertz, Avis, etc. Seamless pickup and drop off shuttle service to and from airport and Turo lot. Highly recommend!!! Oh and good communication with host!

Car was amazing. Great guy to rent a car from. Friendly and very easy to communicate. Definitely recommend!! Would definitely rent again!

Convenient car for getting around the island with responsive host. Good price for extra amenities like beach umbrellas and towels which were very useful during the trip!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Had an amazing experience renting from this Turo host during our overnight trip to Kauaʻi! The vehicle was clean, reliable, and exactly as described. Pickup and drop-off were smooth and convenient, which made exploring the island stress-free. The host was responsive, friendly, and communicated clearly throughout the entire trip. Definitely helped make our quick getaway even better. Would absolutely rent from them again and highly recommend to anyone visiting Kauaʻi!
Great car even better host 10/10 recommend. If it return to this island I would rent again :)

Nice, clean car. Great communication and instructions. Would definitely rent car again. Mahalo!
Super easy process. Lot was easy to find and car was in good condition. No issues at all with our 2 week rental, would use again.

Amazing experience! . I can only recommend Herman. He was highly accommodating of any of my requests (pick up; drop of; car accessories for driving) and he was always responsive to messages. One of my best experiences on Turo! Even though Turo can be more expensive than the airport rental, PLEASE use local people’s cars to rent to support them.. They are much more reliable and accommodating than big rental companies.

Car was perfect for our trip as we visited all sides of the island, super good on gas
Skip the curbside chaos — all collections and returns on Turo at Lihue Airport happen just a short ride away at the Turo-dedicated lot at Kukui Grove Center. It's located behind Target (4303 Nawiliwili Road). If you're arriving between 7 am and 11 pm, hop on the free Turo shuttle from the shuttle and taxi area near Baggage Claim B. It runs every 20–25 minutes and gets you to the lot in under ten. Just show your trip confirmation to the driver and enjoy the ride.
Before you take off, send your host a message through the Turo app to confirm shuttle hours, stall number, and any lockbox or key handoff details — especially helpful for early birds or late-night arrivals so you can coordinate a meet-up with your host outside shuttle-bus hours. You can also share your location in real-time, starting two hours before the trip begins — super handy if you're arriving on a delayed flight or juggling luggage.
There’s a required delivery fee for every Turo booking that starts or ends at Lihue Airport — this helps support the dedicated shuttle service and parking lot at Kukui Grove Center. Turo collects the fee and passes it directly to the airport, with nothing taken off the top. If your host needs to pay for parking before your pickup, that cost will be listed in the vehicle’s trip details, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before you even hit the road.

Contactless check-in and checkout
Many hosts offer contactless check-in and checkout, if their car has remote access technology, allowing you to find the car, unlock it, and be on your way without meeting them in person. Message your host for specific instructions.

Convenient airport car rental pickup and return
Rather than hustling at the busy terminal curbside, take your time picking up the rental car at approved parking lots or garages. Check in, load up your luggage, and get comfortable with the car without a big rush.

Relax with support & damage protection
24/7 support and roadside assistance mean help is just a call away, plus you can choose from a range of protection plans.
Here to tie the knot, simply planning to explore Kauai's wild side, or just wanting to kick back in the sand? There's a perfect rental vehicle for every kind of trip and renting a car on Turo means choosing one that fits your plans, your crew, and your island vibe.
A compact SUV makes it easy to hop from snorkeling at Hanalei Bay to sunbathing at Poipu Beach, with plenty of space for towels, coolers, and beach chairs.
Arrive in style at resort venues like the Royal Sonesta or Ko'a Kea in a premium sedan. Think polished, photo-ready entrances and plush interiors that match the moment.
For scenic drives to Waimea Canyon or parking at rugged trailheads, a luxury SUV or a car like a Jeep Wrangler handles dirt roads and lookouts with ease.

Kauai's east side is where jungle-covered cliffs meet sun-soaked shores. With your own set of wheels, you can chase waterfalls in the morning, hit a hidden beach by lunch, and still make it to a poke shack before sunset — all before waiting on tour buses or crowded shuttles.
Rent the perfect car
Nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," this over 10-mile-long, 3,600-foot-deep marvel stuns with burnt-orange cliffs, sweeping green valleys, and tumbling waterfalls. It's a jaw-dropping drive west along Kaumuali'i Highway (HI-50), about an hour from Lihue. Park at the Waimea Canyon Lookout for panoramic views, or hike either the Canyon Trail to Waipo'o Falls or the more rugged Kukui Trail that descends deep into the canyon for a closer look at Mother Nature's masterpiece.
Just 15 minutes north of town, these iconic twin waterfalls drop 80 feet into a lush, misty basin — and they're visible right from the roadside. Cruise up Ma'alo Road early to score a good parking spot along the viewpoint railing, and keep your camera ready for morning rainbows dancing in the spray. If you're lucky, you'll catch local cliff divers taking the plunge — a daring tradition, though not one you should try yourself. Bring snacks, and take your time soaking in the soundtrack of nature.
A quick five-minute drive from the airport lands you at this calm-water cove — perfect for paddleboarding, body surfing, or lounging with a good book. The nearby boardwalk is littered with local shops like Duke's and shaved ice stands, while Nawiliwili Harbor brings cruise ships, catamaran tours, and a front-row seat to some of the island's best sunset views. If you're visiting on a Friday, you might even catch live music drifting in from restaurants nearby.
Kauai isn't built for rigid schedules. With a rental car on Turo, you don't have to have one. From sunrise at Hanalei Pier to sunset at Polihale, having your own wheels means seeing more of the island on your terms. Public buses are limited, and tours don't always hit the hidden gems, so whether you're chasing waterfalls, grabbing malasadas in Kapa'a, or exploring beaches beyond the guidebooks, a rental car gives you the freedom to roam.
Maximize your time in Kauai by brushing up on these top car rental tips.
Lihue Airport is a handy airport location to collect your rental car. Once you've collected your lei and your luggage, make your way to the shuttle zone outside the baggage claim area and look for the Turo-branded shuttle bus. It shows up every 20–25 minutes and will whisk you away to the Turo lot at Kukui Grove Center — just a short drive from the airport. Show your booking, hop on board, and within minutes, you'll be unlocking your pre-booked car and rolling towards adventure.
Goodbyes are never easy, but with Turo it's different. When it's time to say aloha to your rental, bring it back to the same Kukui Grove Center lot. Pull a ticket at the gate, park in any open Turo spot, snap a quick photo of the stall, and send it to your host through the app. Lock up (either via lockbox or remote locking), head to the shuttle pickup point, and you should arrive at the terminal just in time for one last island coffee before takeoff.
It's practically a stone's throw away — just under two miles from the runway to town via Ahukini Road. You may even be able to detour and drive past Kalapaki Beach and Nawiliwili Harbor before the average traveler has even figured out which way north is! Total drive time? About five minutes — give or take a photo stop.
Kauai's roads are built for laid-back cruising — and you'll want to keep it slow to soak up the views. Speed limits typically hover around 25 miles per hour and range from 40–50 mph on highways. But it's not just speed to watch — on the North Shore, one-lane bridges are common, so make sure to yield to oncoming traffic and be prepared to wave a friendly "mahalo" after passing.
Wildlife often shares the road. Feral chickens rule the island (and the intersections), and you may spot nene geese — Hawaii's state bird — and the occasional wild boar crossing rural roads, especially around dawn and dusk.
Rain showers can appear and disappear quickly, turning red dirt into slick clay. Keep your headlights on in wet weather and avoid braking suddenly on unpaved or coastal roads. And remember — Hawaiian law bans the use of handheld devices while driving, so keep your phone stashed or mounted if you're navigating.
Parking in Lihue is like a breath of fresh air. You'll find several garages along Rice Street, Kalapaki Circle, and Ho'Olaulea Way — all within walking distance to local cafés, poke stops, and food trucks. For beach days, spots like Kalapaki, Lyndgate, and Hanamaulu offer free daytime parking lots, but you should arrive early to claim a good spot.
Great news! There are no toll booths, and no stress here. Like the rest of Hawaii, Kauai is completely toll-free from coast to canyon.
Need to find a place to refuel? You'll find plenty of gas station options along the Kuhio and Kaumualii Highways and Rice Street.
Looking for an EV charging station instead? Look for chargers along Kuhio Highway and around Rice Street and Pahee Street. You'll also be able to recharge at the airport and hotels like the Royal Sonesta Hotel.
Without a doubt. Kauai's public transit doesn't cover most beaches, canyons, or remote trails — and it stops running early. With your own car, you can catch the sunrise at Ke'e Beach, make impromptu roadside waterfall stops, or spend golden hour sipping mai tais in Po'ipu without watching the clock. Whether it's a day trip to Waimea Canyon or a scenic cruise past taro fields in Hanalei Valley, having a car is essential for doing Kauai right.
It doesn't matter if you're looking for a budget car rental or something a little more bougie, whether you're cruising coastal roads, heading to a resort, or exploring Kauai's lush landscapes, you'll find a diverse selection of vehicles to suit your journey on Turo.
- Luxury SUVs: Ride in comfort with a Lexus RX or BMW X5, perfect for resort-hopping in Poipu or sunset cruises along the South Shore.
- Electric vehicles: An electric SUV or an electric sedan is perfect for any adventure. Go green with a Tesla Model Y or Model 3, ideal for zero-emission drives between Princeville, Kapaa, and Lihue.
- Jeep rentals and pickup trucks: Go rugged with a Jeep Wrangler or Toyota Tacoma, perfect for Polihale access roads or hauling farmers' market finds.
- Compact and standard SUVs: A Nissan Rogue or Mazda CX-5 handles beach days, grocery runs, and scenic drives with ease.
- Minivans: Pack in the whole family with a Chrysler Pacifica or Toyota Sienna for laid-back days at Lydgate or Keiki Cove.
- Convertibles and sports cars: Cruise with the top down in a Mustang or Camaro, which are ideal for coastal drives to Kilauea or Haena.
The cost of car rental in Lihue can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Lihue, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
